Ugg. I'm a really easy going person.
But I seriously stress about a few things and THIS is one of those. I really dislike "hey can you bring a dish" I can bring chips, napkins, drinks, you name it store bought anything my name's on it.
I'm going to a Halloween party this weekend and the person asked me to make something. UGG.
He said someone is making meatballs, and another chili. Last time I made buffalo chicken dip and people were like WTF is THAT.
There typically isn't a lot of FOOD at this event so I was thinking maybe funeral sandwiches??? But I've never done those. Would I be ok? Would those be OK? What's a better idea? Would they stay hot ok? What's a better idea? OMG stressing already.
BEGGING here people.

What about something like homemade mac and cheese or scalloped potatoes? Those go well with chili and meatballs. No need to stress... keep it si,ple and you will be fine.

My go-to contribution is deviled eggs. No one ever makes them, people seem to like them, and they're easy to make.

I like the homemade Mac & cheese idea above. Or maybe baked ziti since someone is making meatballs. The funeral sandwiches you're thinking of would be fine too. You need to rethink hanging out with people that don't appreciate Buffalo chicken dip.  Forgot to say--the Mac n cheese and baked ziti would keep warm in a crockpot. Look for crockpot specific Mac n cheese recipes as the cheese used in normal baked m&c recipes can separate.

I couldn't believe hardly anyone ate it, back home it was wildly popular and it would always be completely gone. I had to tell then what it was and it got the side eye and a couple bold folks have it a whirl but most I guess didn't care for the lettucey tomato looks of it.
So, I'm not sure if I can help, but if you're not in PA give the layered taco dip a whirl. (The one with refried beans, sour cream mixed with taco seasoning, grated cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, black olives and tortilla chips on the side, it's so so good) (what the hell do these people know anyway, shoo fly pie? Tomato pie? Gross)

I think I'd make a large green salad with a couple of dressings on the side so people can dress it jut before eating, and so the leftovers are edible the next day or two.
Also like the mac 'n cheese and baked ziti ideas.

You can do it. One of the best things that ever happened to me was that a couple of times of year I have to bring food to book club. I have gained confidence with cooking for larger groups...and in trying new things entirely. Like grinning cat said, keep it simple. An easy to put together casserole, a heavy appetizer. This is my go to for a lot of these types of events. It seems to be a hit. (It is a shrimp and grits app)

What about chips and dips? Do a salsa, and queso.. everyone loves those.
@z*g I had the same reaction to the 7 layer taco dip at a party in London. Didn't make that mistake twice

Throw some chicken parts (breasts, thighs, doesn't matter) in the crock pot, cover with BBQ sauce. When it's cooked through, shred the chicken. Provide some buns/rolls to put it on. People love it and it's super easy.

Spinach artichoke dip in a sourdough bread bowl is always my go to potluck dish. I serve it hot and cold, just depends on how I'm feeling that day.

I think that they liked it once they tried it, but they really had NO idea what it was. It was, "EWWW, what IS THAT?!" Doesn't make ya feel real good. LOL
I have NO idea why I stress over stupid crap like this but I do. Thanks for the Keep It SImple stupid reminder. I will enjoy the party once I'm there but GEEZ.

Stouffer's makes a mean party sized Mac and Cheese. If you're luckily, you will even find it on sale. I'm a from-scratch-cook. But this time of year, it seems like Mac and Cheese is always on sale and there are coupons as well. I can't buy the ingredients as cheaply as I can buy a pan of Mac and Cheese. And the same goes for Stouffer's lasagne. And here's my dirty little secret--take the frozen block of pasta and pop it out of a foil pan and into a 9x13 baking dish. I have a Longaberger 9x13 pan that fits the big party sized entrees perfectly. And it stays warmer longer than it does in just a foil pan. That's why I do it--not because it looks home made!
