I learned about sumo oranges here a few years ago. They are large, juicy, sweet and expensive oranges, but I think they are worth it. They have a very short season so if you are interested you should look for them soon. I found them at Whole Foods yesterday for $3.99 a pound. I bought 10 oranges to share and it was a little over $25! Last year I found them a little cheaper at sprouts than Whole Foods, but they had not arrived at Sprouts as of Thursday. They might be there now though. If anyone sees them there or at other stores, please update us!

I've never had one, but will look when I go out to the "fancy" supermarket nearest our neighborhood. I really like Cara Cara oranges and they're easy to find this year, both my neighborhood supermarkets have them right now. I learned about sumo oranges here a few years ago. I haven’t seen them here yet, but we’ve been addicted to them for about 4 years now. I can’t wait!

The first time I saw them I thought "WTF are these freaky mandarins on steroids?" Then I tried one and I was impressed by their juicy goodness.

I just walked in the door from Wegmans with my first box of the season! And opened my phone to find a text from my friend who first turned me onto them letting me know Wegmans had them. I have never eaten a fruit before that inspires people to text each other about them, year after year. ![](https://media.fotki.com/2v2JGmVoCxA5eGL.gif)

Huh... wonder if these are the oranges that my MIL was talking about last week. My son *loves* Halos with a mega passion. Regular oranges he will devour as well. Last week my MIL said that she ordered 10 pounds of some special oranges and she is giving us half. If these are them, mama will be trying them too lol

I'll be on the lookout!
Last year, at Walmart, I found "Lumpy Bumpy" oranges (mandarins, I think).. they also said "Gold Nugget on the package.
I swear I sat down and ate the entire bag. Went back and bought more. THey were SO dang good! And I think most Walmart produce is horrible.

Yippee! I love these amazing oranges. Thanks to the Peas I tried one last year and was hooked instantly.
I was at Whole Foods yesterday about 3:00 and there were only a few (less than 10) left when I got there. I hadn't read this thread yet and the ones left didn't look all that great so I decided to wait and see next week if they had more. Looks like they will and I'll check back again later this week.
Thanks so much for the notice.

First time Eating one now...got it for $2
Very good, this particular one is a bit sour but still has a good taste and juicy. Do they always taste sour? Or did I just get one that is more than usual?

Typically not at all sour. More like canned mandarin oranges, but in a fresh fruit. No sour, just sweet and that mandarin orange flavor on steroids. I’m sorry you got a not-quite-ripe one!

Will they sweeten if we let them sit there a few days or is their flavor contingent on when they were picked? Texas peas, we got ours at HEB!

Rats - not at our HEB yet dewryce. Well, I suppose they might be, I went to a different one than normal today. Adding insult to injury, I was trying to buy a bunch of stuff to use up FSA money and then it all turned out to be noneligible so I went over to customer service to get them all taken off before I paid. Oh, and my checkout person was someone I know pretty well (like through the rest of life, not just from the checkout stand!). I was mortified, even though I supposed I didn't need to be, but I still was! I deserve some sumo oranges now, dammit!

I second your thought that you shouldn’t have been mortified or even slightly embarrassed.

If they are smaller, not sweet & juicy then I'll bet they aren't the real deal. I've had some smaller ones once sold as Sumo and I'm 100% sure they weren't. There's another variety of mandarin the looks a bit lumpy like this but they aren't nearly in the same league.

There's another variety of mandarin the looks a bit lumpy like this but they aren't nearly in the same league. It was much larger than a Mandarin...about 3-4 times larger, labeled as Sumo at Kroger. I think it is, just a bit sour. I hope the price will eventually go down would love to buy this more often for the whole family. We can go through a whole 5-pound bag of Mandarins in a day lol. I think for now it will be my dirty little secret lol
