So we decided on a sleep number mattress.
You can buy a sleep number adjustable base that clicks the mattress in place with magnets i.e. They are meant to go together.
That said, having spoken to both Sleep number and Leggett and Platt, the makers of the sleep number base, I can't decide between the sleep number base and a wall hugging base. The prodigy 2.0 by Leggett and Platt is the one we are looking at. I use my nightstand a lot. It's part of the headboard so can't move. The SN base moves so far from the wall when the head is raised I won't be able to reach the nightstand. The P2 stays against the headboard as the head goes up (the whole mattress moves back) but it isn't a set the way the SN is and it doesn't look as good.
Both companies confirm you can use the mattress with either base. The wall hugging base will need a retainer bar.
This is such a big non returnable expense. I don't want to make a costly mistake
Your opinion matters. Please share your experiences.

I made the costly mistake about 18 months ago. I did get a wall hugger base from Saatva and while it is called a "wall hugger" you still end up way forward from the nightstand and it was too hard for me to turn and reach something. I also didn't like how when your head is raised it forces your feet to the very end of the bed so you have to have your bedding loose down at the foot of the mattress. It just felt "off" any way I tried to adjust it. I really wish I hadn't purchased an adjustable base at all. Also, you have to leave a lot of clearance space under the bed for the mechanical arms to move when raising and lowering the bed. It completely messed up my underbed storage and I still have containers sitting around in my room that don't fit under there anymore.
I would go to a place that has the base and lay in the bed and really take in how it works and how it would work in your room with your nightstand and anything you want under your bed.

I have a knock off sleep number bed (personal comfort) haven't had any problems with the adjustable bed part, but don't have a nightstand at the head of the bed. Love love love my adjustable bed. I use it to read every morning before I get out of bed.

This is so funny. We just ordered a base today because we, too, have decided to try a Sleep Number. We ordered the PostureCloud from Walmart as our base. The reason was price. If it works out, we will save $1,700 by using a less expensive base. We just couldn't see spending over $2000 for an adjustable base. The Sleep Number one we were looking at only raised the head and this will raise the foot as well. The main reason we are getting the adjustable base is for when DH is recovering from surgery or other occasional medical issues. We don't have a TV in our bedroom and I just don't see using it on a daily basis. I don't think it is a wall hugger. Honestly I never even thought about that. The main thing I want is to get something that we can both sleep on. We've been trying mattresses for a year and it has been exhausting and expensive.

Menards carries a Serta adjustable base, head, foot adjust and massage, 599 for queen. It’s the one I have been thinking about for awhile.

I’m glad you’ve been posting these questions because I’m also in the market for an adjustable base and I hadn’t even thought about the nightstand issue.

I hope to have everything here and up by the end of the month but Dh can't help me as he is recovering from a shoulder replacement. Somehow I have to get a queen poster bed disassembled and carted to the basement and get the new base put in place before the sleep number one gets here. I LOVE that metal poster bed and I'm not giving it up though I'm not sure when it will ever be used again.

I have the Leggett and Platt base sold by Sleep Number, with the adjustable foot as well. I like it but I have never used another base so I don’t know how good it is compared to others. One pro for me is that the mattress stays on the bed magnetically so it doesn’t need a retaining bar (eta: I just reread your post and saw that you mentioned that). It also has the under bed lighting which is helpful at night .

I hadn't thought to see if I could find the P2 locally. Macys has it so I will go check it out tomorrow.

We don’t have a wall hugger base - ours is a split king that has both foot and head adjustment When I am sleeping/only have my head raised a few inches, the nightstand is just fine. But when I have to sleep on my back, the zero gravity setting does make it hard to use the nightstand. My solution is to have this table next to my bed that can move easily closer or farther away when I don’t need it: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QMNTMXA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hmm.. We have a Sleep Number split king I10 bed, and the Leggett adjustable bases (one on each since split king) which basically just sit inside the metal king sized frame we have. I find it is ok to reach my nightstand. I am interested in this magnetic thing - I don't think we have that. I find that my mattress slides to the side a lot and every few days I have to shove it back towards the center.

LOVE reading these posts!! DH & I have been dreaming of an adjustable mattress for a few years now. We have a Queen mattress that is 9 years old and really shot. I had no idea that when you're a certain weight, you need a different type of mattress. No wonder our mattresses don't last too long!
Anyway, I can look at these posts and dream. With all of our surgeries and recoveries, an adjustable bed would just be magical, but it'll never happen....... We'd be fine with the Queen size not being split...... but DH needs both ends to adjust. I'd be blessed to have the head part move. I put about 6 pillows under me after my surgeries. Ugh.......
Good info here. The Peas are amazing!
