bags for flying? We have not flown in almost 20 yrs. We have a few suitcases but I don't think any are suitable as carry-ons so I need to buy something. My son has a duffel bag that I think will work and my daughter has a backpack, but that's it so far.

I prefer either backpacks or a small suitcase that has wheels. Lugging a tote or duffel bag over one shoulder gets very tiring, especially in a larger airport.

A rolling suitcase (check TJ Maxx or Marshall's) and a large purse.

I have the rolling duffle from Eddie Bauer with the hard bottom - LOVE them! They are super lightweight, but hold a ton of stuff. Very well made. They come in 5 colors and 3 sizes (smallest is perfect for carry on/overhead bins). They aren't cheap, but watch for a sale as Eddie Bauer has great sales.

We all have a small rolling suitcase that fits the overhead bin. I can do 8 days in that. (well that and a small back pack that fits under the seat in front of me. )

A rolling suitcase and a medium sized tote with an inner pocket. I bring a small wristlet style purse that I tuck inside of my tote bag pocket. That holds my phone, ID, money and credit cards.
I got an entire set of luggage (large roll suitcase, carry-on roll suitcase, one large duffel bag, one small duffel bag and one laptop bag) from JC Penney for a reasonable price. I made sure to buy a color besides black in case I end up checking my bags, it is so much easier to spot my light blue bags in the sea of black ones.

I almost always check a suitcase so my carry on is usually:
A 31 'Cindy' tote Purse
If I am not checking a bag it's a small suitcase that fits in the overhead bin or a Vera Bradley weekender.

I almost always check a large bag. Used to carry on a duffel bag or a backpack, but have lately downsized to a very small backpack. I am a terrible over-packer, but a smaller-sized carryon fits under the seat and makes it easier to walk around the airport and also check out the concourse stores to pass the time while waiting to board. I do struggle a bit, but I've found that I really DO need less "stuff."

I have a small wheeled 'worlds lightest case' thing - it's just right for me, not so large that I am taking up too much room and carries all I need. So much easier to have wheels if you have to walk a long way through the airport and that thing is seriously so light it's easy to lift anywhere. I love it! I then take a reasonable size 'unstructured' purse (my Longchamp normally as those things are made so well) so it can go under the seat in front of me and which I make sure anything I might need on the flight is in (sounds obvious, but I have made the mistake more than once of having to rummage around in my bag in the overhead and it's a real pain!).

Look on eBags.com. I have one of their carry-on sized bags and really like it. I use it all the time for non-flying trips too. The one I have holds way more than it looks like it will hold and it is fairly lightweight too. It has several interior pockets and one outside pocket that can hold my laptop and a few accessories. It works very nicely for me as a soccer weekend bag too.

Do you belong to Costco? I just bought a wheeled carryon that fits under the seat in front of you for $30. It was a new item, located right when you walk in the door.

It depends if I really need a carry on or not.
I will often fly with either my camera bag and a large enough purse to carry my tablet or a cheap carry on with wheels and my camera bag.

Dh flys overnight for work. He finds that small rolling is too big for overnight.
Any suggestions for so sting smaller with wheels?

thanks everyone. After reading maybe a couple of our suitcases will work for carry-ons after all. I'll have to get the measurements.

Roller is ok, but I don't like putting it in the overhead. I like using the Vera Bradley Weekender. It has a long strap along with handles, plus it fits under the seat so I can reach anything I might need.

If you plan on continuing to travel I think the small rolling suitcase is the best choice. After many years of travel with non rolling carry ons, it gets heavy and tiring. I like taking my carry on and a good sized purse/bag for anything I may need during the flight.

If this goes well we may start flying out west instead of driving. The more I think about it the more I think we can get away with just two carryons between the 5 of us (just a change of clothes for each and some snacks and magazines) plus the girls and I have our purses. The posts here have given me great ideas on what to use from what we already have.

I check my bags too if going for more than one day. The whole liquid, gel, cream thing is too big of a hassle, plus I'm short and have a heck of a time getting my bag in the overhead. If you think you will use the bags you get more often I would get a 22" spinner. With everyone using carry ons now a days makes boarding the plane a huge PITA.

My kids and dh all prefer backpacks, but I like my rolling case. The wheels swivel 360 degrees so it can be rolled regularly or on it's side (like for going down the aisle on the plane). It's a Samsonite and cost about $100 on sale, but you get what you pay for. I've had several other cases over the years that were cheaper but didn't last very long (I'm a frequent flier).

I carry a vera Bradley traveler (or is it the grand traveler)? It is a bit large but does fit under the seat if I don't stuff it too full. In it I carry a small purse, my laptop, a rolled up blanket, a book or two, my camera, my ipod and travel documents.
Sometimes I will have a small suitcase too that I gate check. I seem to get away with both without question as long as I gate check the suitcase.
This last trip everyone else had backpacks and I kind of wished I had a backpack. But I would be able to carry as much.

I have a large Eddie Bauer tote on wheels that was a Christmas special several years ago and a larger Eddie Bauer duffel bag on wheels (also a Christmas special). Which one I use is dependent on how long I am going to be gone. Both fit in the overhead and I also carry a purse or small tote. Dh swears by is small suitcase on wheels and his backpack.

We try to do just carry on, and in that case, it's a carry on sized suitcase with wheels and a great big purse for me. DH brings his Tommy Bahamas carry on bag and a backpack as his personal item.
Always wheels. Must have wheels.

As for carry-on for domestic flights where I've checked a bag, I have a huge patchwork leather tote bag--It fits my laptop, cosmetic bags, meds and whatever I need to carry on.
I haven't needed a suitcase that can fit in an overhead as my only bag. I prefer my tote. I would buy a small roller bag if I had to travel overseas in a hurry with one bag, I'd go buy one. I just don't see the need to have something I haven't needed in 10 years.
I have larger rolling bags, and dh has a small roller that does fit in the overhead. What he would pick for that bag isn't what I would.
There's a lot of bags, but what I look for is rotating sturdy wheels and a tall puller--there' nothing worse than the top of the pull being too low and having to hunch over and drag suitcases through a huge airport, much less through a city. My mom has an American Tourister pull bag that had removable shelves in it. I loved that.
The large bags look great, but they are so easy to go over the limit. I also get bags in loud colors. They stick out in a sea of black and grey.

I'd love an excuse to get a new carry-on suitcase, but we got a set on clearance 13 years ago after we got married, and it's still going... I'd love a Samsonite.
If I were picking one today, I'd choose something LIGHT. Not really for weight restrictions (size helps with that), more for not wanting to have to lift any more weight than necessary. And, I agree with choosing a bright color!

Honestly, I'm cheap and don't like to check a bag. I use my jansport rolling backpack from nursing school. Holds A TON and is very durable. I always vacation when it's warm, so lightweight clothes don't take up much room and I pack that baby full, including quite a bit of my camera equipment. Then I bring the biggest "purse" I can find and put meds, wristlet, phone, iPad, and little things leaving room for things I may purchase on Vacay. I'm short and fat and I'm able to maneuvered everything with ease, which I could never do the luggage carryon bags. Damn thing always flipped over on me. Love that backpack!

First let me say as an aside, I am addicted to luggage and purses. LOL.
For me, it depends on the trip. For my next trip, I am heading to Brave Girls Camp in Idaho and then to Denver to visit the inlaws. My husband won't be traveling with me, so I need something I can schlep myself (and I have back issues).
I have a hard side spinner set that I got from Costco last year, 21" & 25". And a small laptop size rolling bag that will also fit under the seat. And I just got a new Vera Bradley weekender bag (I Had an old one, but they just redesigned it so it has the trolley sleeve)
I will probably bring the smaller hard sized case and the weekend packed inside it (for anything I might need to bring back with me). I will check that bag. I then will bring a backpack with a smaller purse which I can slip into the backpack if needed.

I bought this same bag this past Sunday. I plan to use it during a trip that is coming up soon. When we are taking a beach vacation, we will also use a beach bag as a carry on. The only problem with this is that it has to be carried.........no wheels. We have another rolling suitcase that can be a carry on but we usually check it since I almost always get free checked bags due to using my airline credit card to buy the tickets.
