OK, when do you know if you kid has a flu bug or the actual flu that needs tamiflu?
DS complained of a headache on Monday, had a slight temp of 99. He took some advil and seemed much better. Tues he woke up and said he felt normal. Went to school and texted me around 1 that he wasn't feeling well, would finish out the day but wouldn't go to basketball practice. Came home and took a nap. Woke up and ate 3 grilled cheese sandwiches. His temp was 101. I gave him some nyquil before he went to bed.
This morning he woke up and was hot (temp 102). Said his throat hurt a little, headache, was hot. I gave him some nyquil. He's been drinking gatorade and water. He threw up at noon and had chills. His temp was 101.7.
I had my physical yesterday and the nurse mentioned the flu shot wasn't really doing much for this year's strain of flu (he didn't have the shot either, we missed it). But how do you know when it's a virus or when its the real flu?

The flu is a virus.

That said, bring him in to be tested. That is the only way to determine whether it is an influenza virus, or another virus or illness making him sick.
Eta: They will only give Tamiflu within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms, so he is past the Tamiflu window.

Flu is flu. -There are flu viruses (influenza) -There is a stomach virus (mistakenly called stomach flu- it is NOT flu) -There are cold viruses.
If you are asking if your child has a cold or the flu, we cant help with that. A doctor needs to do a flu test and if your son is within the 48 hours of first symptoms, he may be prescribed Tamiflu. Even if he is outside the window for Tamiflu, he should be seen to determine if he has influenza. There is no such thing as "just the flu". Influenza is serious and kills many, many people each year- some of them without underlying health conditions.
Finally, it is not too late to get the flu shot. Most pharmacies will still have doses, even if the dr office is out of them

I have had the flu twice in my life. Both times I got sick fast. I went from fine to feeling like a truck hit me in a span of a couple hours. If in doubt, bring him in to be tested.

All 4 of my kids have had exactly what you are describing. The 1st 2 I took to the doctor. She confirmed it was the flu (and ear infections). Knocked them out for a week. I didn’t bother with the other 2. Also out for about a week.
Interestingly, I asked about Tamiflu because I knew we were in the window to receive it. She didn’t want to give it, as they were going to be out on antibiotics for their ears. Also, she said that it would only decrease the symptoms by 12 hours! 😱 And since we were not also having issues with vomiting and diarrhea, we weren’t concerned with dehydration. So a reduction in symptoms for only 12 hours out of an entire week of feeling crappy didn’t seem worth it to her or to me. So no Tamiflu for us. Everyone is fine.

We had a virus in our household last week. DH and I both had chills, headache, body aches, upset stomach/bowels, and extremely tired. We did not vomit, but then again we did not eat anything but broth for 2 days too. No sore throat or fever.

Otherwise it could be a rhinovirus, coronovirus, parainfluenze (which is not a flu virus despite the similarity in names) or a host other viruses that cause similar symptoms. You can't go by the symptoms to know what he has. Tamiflu is not a necessity. It shortens the virus by less than 24 hours. If you are concerned take him to the doctor to get tested and get advice.

There are now newer anti-viral drugs out for the flu. I don’t know if they have to be given in the same time frame as Tamiflu.

I am just over the flu and had the flu shot. I took one dose of Tamiflu and threw it up. Ok I used Tylenol and an electric blanket and felt like death for a week. BFF the nurse diagnosed it first in body aches and pain. It was a bad week.

Side note- several studies have shown that fevers have a therapeutic benefit in aiding your body's immune system.

Glad he does not have the flu! Hope he feels better soon!
My pediatrician does not love Tamiflu because as was mentioned above: -it tastes terrible and kids end up refusing to take it or throwing it up -it only reduces the illness for less than 1 day He says there is a new medicine this year but had not prescribed it yet when I spoke to him but said it sounds promising.

I’ve been told that a cold comes on gradually and that with the flu, you’re fine one minute and super sick the next.

Last year dd has fever and chills with no appetite or energy for 10 days. I took her to ER and she tested negative for flu. They said they’re seeing many more 10-14 day viruses now . I’m glad he was negative for flu. I hope he feels better soon. And to add, I think here there were 2 diff flu vaccines this year. As seniors, my parents had to wait for the second vaccine which was supposed to be more effective. We are low risk so we all had the first offered flu vaccine.

We had regular strength flu vaccine and also a super strength Senior flu vaccine in the USA. The senior flu vaccine has the same strains of the flu in it, but is a stronger concentration. It has been difficult to get in many areas. My mom’s pharmacy in MD has a 1-month long waiting list for the senior vaccine, but plenty of the regular strength.

I was DX with Influenza A. I was SICK...man was I sick.
I was fine the night before and woke up freezing/chills. I had a high temp for 4 days. My temp was 104.8 and I stopped temping before the thermometer beeped (so it was even higher)and I took a cool shower right away. Four days I stayed in bed. One day I slept 22 hours straight. My entire body ached and I had a hard time walking. Urgent care found a spot on my lung (He said it happens a lot with the Flu) So I was prescribed Antibiotics. I also had the Flu shot months before and I wonder if it would have been even worse/deadly if I did not. It took a good week to feel somewhat normal.
Edited to add my lungs were in bad shape and I felt like I was in trouble

Someday I'll get the Shingrix shots! Be prepared, it hurts! My arm was sore for a good week afterward. Shots normally don't have a linger sore impact on me but that one did! I go next month to get round two. eta: I had the shingles as a teenager. That was way worse than the shot even with the decades I've had to forget how bad they were. Get the shot. Don't wait to get the shingles.
