Sad to see them closing.
Stationery chain Papyrus, which once had over 450 stores throughout the U.S., is shutting the doors of its standalone stores.
The company that has operated the retail chain is reportedly closing all of its locations nationwide, citing "current challenges of the retail industry." Liquidation sales are already underway at several stores. (The company's cards and branded products will continue to be sold at other stores, but will no longer have standalone locations.)

I’ve been in their shops many times, but I rarely bought anything. The stuff was pretty to look at but a bit on the expensive side. It is hard today to compete with Target-type stores selling trendy stationary at a cheaper price. We still have a Paper Source. That store has a lot of cool stuff but I do wonder how long they will last. It is sad because I love stationary stores.

A couple of days ago I popped into ours to look at Christmas cards on clearance. The second I walked up to the table the clerk SHOUTED at me to grab what I wanted now and that there would be no returns. I guess she already knew. 😞

Huh. I don’t think I’ve even seen one since the 90’s. I was a broke teenager, so I don’t think I bought anything more than once or twice. Sad, though... I loved that store.

Haven’t heard of that one.
We don’t even have a Hallmark store in the area anymore.

Our local drugstore sells their cards. I hope that doesn't go away because my DH gets them for me on every special occasion. They are so pretty.

They had nice wrapping paper. It was expensive though. I will miss it.

Their main competitor is probably Paper Source, which has done a much better job of providing a better product mix of styles, price points, etc.
Papyrus always felt super expensive and a little stodgy. Sad to see they couldn’t improve their in store experience.

That's too bad. At least we can still get their cards elsewhere. I love the store in Wellesley, MA, but there is a Paper Source right across the road!

I saw an article that said all Carlton Cards and Papyrus stores will be closing, it was on a Canadian site. I didn't click in because we don't have either of those in my city, not sure if they are associated with each other. But more closures.

There is one in the Galleria here, but I can't remember the last time I was in there. Then again, I rarely go to the Galleria anymore either. I do pop in to the Paper Source store a few times a year, but it is in an open are shopping area and next door to the Apple store. I can park in front, pop in and out in no time and not deal with parking garages and long walks to get to it.
In the last year or so, my grocery stores (HEB and Central Market) have started carrying good size collections of the Papyrus products. I buy the cards all the time because it is super convenient and people love to receive them. Even though they are a bit more expensive, it saves me a trip (time and gas) to another store to pick up cards.

i have a friend who used to work for American Greetings (who owns Papyrus). she would stock stores like Target and Ralphs with greeting cards on a regular basis. what didn't sell during a particular season, they had to throw out (greeting cards, gift card holders, gift bags, tissue, paper plates, cups, napkins, etc). instead of throwing the stuff away, she and her co-workers would keep the items and give them away. as a result, i have a ton of Papyrus cards. beautiful, elaborately decorated cards that American Greetings would have thrown away to make room for the new seasonal cards. i wasn't so fond of the paper plates and other stuff but i sure loved stocking up on the greeting cards.

From the above article: Honestly, in today’s world, this is a much smarter business model for a niche product like cards and stationary. Let someone else carry the costs of the brick and mortar stores and staff.

There used to be one in my area, but it closed a while ago. I still don't have an appetite for greeting cards in the $10 range.
