But that’s only until the estate/probate is settled, right? Then who covers it? I can see that turning into a huge nightmare if there are multiple heirs who are all expected to kick in their share to pay the bills. The estate can’t close until the house sells. The brothers are greedy , they want to raise the price. They don’t want a price reduction. I spend more on chicken feed than taxes, utilities and insurance run on the place. Who is the personal representative? It doesn’t sound like the brothers are very invested in selling it so they would have no incentive at all to keep it up and looking nice for showings, etc. The bad thing is that if there is an attorney involved, the longer probate is dragged out the more those costs will rack up. Also, for every year that the probate isn’t settled, won’t the estate have to file a tax return? More paperwork, more hassle and more PITA.

Until others start staying there and run up the utilities. They want the heat warmer than they keep their house since they aren't paying for it, or the AC. Water left running because they aren't paying, you are. And insurance is going to go up because it will no longer be vacant. We use this house one week a month. Utilities are no problem. We actually want the brothers to come, so they can help with dad. We just need some basic guidelines for staying in the house. You could have led with this information, responses may have been different.

Eh, my response won't be different. This is going to be a clusterfuck and I expect there will an update about what a cluster it is, and asking for advice on how to fix it. <-- brutally honest at times...
