My right eye feels like I have a piece of dust in it. This is the third day I've had this problem in a week's time, although it has not been consecutive days and it just started now for today. So it doesn't last all day. I don't wear contacts. I have started wearing a new mascara on Friday. What do you think is going on?

I heard pink eye is going around. Could it be that? Maybe you are not friendly with the new mascara!

Do you have dry eyes? I didn't realize that my eyes were so dry until my optho told me they were "scaly." I really didn't notice how dry they felt until I started using Systane drops. When I don't use them I can really tell I a difference.

Maybe you are getting a sty? Is it painful?

Could you have some hay-fever in your eyes? It feels just like you have dust in your eyes, and they feel sore and itchy.
A lot of people who have never had hay-fever, are saying they have it this year.
You could get eye drops from the chemists, and see if it helps.

something may have scratched your eye and it usually takes a few days to settle down. Saline or eyedrops may help sooth it.

Oh gosh you guys are all suggesting these horrible things! lol I had my first sty ever in December on the other eye, it took 2 months to go away! It started with an irritation when looking at my computer too long. I have some drops left over from that, will use it when I get home.

Do you have an eye cup? They sell them at CVS...I think. It's basically a little cup that fits to your eye and will let you wash your eye, see if you can flush whatever it is out. Or try generating some tears, see if that will flush it out.

I don't know if I would do that if I were you. You really probably shouldn't use old eye meds. If you don't have a sty and you touched your eye in anyway with the bottle when you were using it in December you might wind up with another one.
Whenever it feels like I have something in my eye, I lift the lid off the eyeball and then manually move my lid up and down a few times, it will usually clear the sandy or gritty feeling I'm experiencing.
Good Luck...I'm sorry that your eyes are bothering you. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

It's Visine dry eye drops. You think live bacteria can sit on a bottle for 6 months?

I have had that from time to time. Recently learned I have dry eyes and that is what caused the sensation. It is worse on high pollution days. Anyway, my dr. recommends the individual "tears"--ones that are preservative free. Each vial is supposed to be 1-3 uses. It helps.

I'd recommend using an eye bath too because you may actually have a speck of dust or something in there. But if it doesn't settle down please go and get it checked. You don't want to mess around with your eyes.

I'm thinking it is probably your new mascara. Stop using it for awhile. Try the eye drops (though I would get a new bottle, myself). If things aren't better by, say, Thursday, get it checked out (before the weekend). Once cleared, try the new mascara again. I just think it is suspicious that you started using it on Friday and now have had 3 days of irritation.

My eyes get irritated if I pet my cats, then rub my eyes. It took me a while to figure out it was a reaction to my cats. Is it possible you are having an allergic reaction?

I have had a tiny mascara flake get stuck under the upper eye lid and it felt like something in my eye forever. I had to flip the upper lid with a q tip to get it out. I'm not recommending that you try that but if that is where you feel the irritation, its a thought.

Licensed optician here. I would definitely buy new eye drops, and try the thicker gel style (like Genteal liquid gel drops). Also, pick up some of the ointment to use at night, it will be soothing if you have an abrasion. I wouldn't mess around longer than a few more days with it, however. If things don't improve, go get it checked.

Also, it's exceptionally easy to contaminate eye drops, so I wouldn't hesitate to throw out the old ones. Any long term use of Visine more than occasionally is not wise (not saying if you do or not, I don't know) as it can cause rebound redness. A good eye bath/rinse before using the gel drops would be wise. And I do think the new mascara is suspect.

Ok I threw out the Visine. I found a box of Refresh Optive Advanced lubricant eye drops. I won't wear mascara tomorrow, I don't like this brand anyway. Thanks everyone!
