Does anyone remember those old-style Scrapbooks with only black pages? My mother and grandmother both used that style many, many years ago. The pages where a heavy paper, they used those white corner tabs to hold in pictures and they wrote in white pen directly on the pages. I'm doing a personal "just for me" scrapbook type thing, where I'll be mostly just gluing in random things. Bits & pieces, nothing fancy, little to no pictures and not much journaling. I used to scrapbook random things when I was a kid. It was easy to find what was then called "scrapbooks" that where kind of over-sized and the pages where a cream colored and more of a heavy construction style paper. If I can't find black pages, I'd love to find one of those. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or am a so old, you all think I'm just a batty old lady? I don't want to spend a lot and I'm looking for a simple scrapbook (no protecting sleeves - I want to work directly on the pages, no need to move them around.) (Re-reading this, I'm wondering if I should just make something. I don't love 3-ring binders, but I guess that may have to do.) TIA

I'd search for photo albums. Paper Source has some. That will give you an idea of some brands to look for. Or you could make your own cover with book board and a stab binding.

I used to buy spiral bound ones for my travel scrapbooks, before I got into “real” scrapbooking. Lol. Search on amazon for spiral bound scrapbook black pages.

What about the Dylusions Creative black journals? They come in several sizes. I think Michaels may carry some. Or Amazon. joblackford used a black journal for a project. Maybe she can chime in on what she used.

Nope, you're not a batty old lady This page is from my older sister's scrapbook--we think our Mom's embellishments are pretty cool. It's verrry hard to see, but there are white photo corners holding the pik, just as you described. I wish I had a pik of the actual scrapbook to show you. It's open on the side, ( no binding), and the covers were possibly made of very thick cardboard(?) and there was usually a tassle along the side. We're not sure if she hand-drew the swirlies and/or used what was called a "french curve". I'd LOVE to know what kind of inks she used that have lasted over 60 years!!! I'll bet you can still find the style you're describing--but it may take quite a search. I also made one like the kind you're describing---back in the 80's--just like your description, but the pages were manila colored. It is FULL of ephemera---lots of bulky stuff ---and I lovvvve it! It also has the classic tassle I mentioned above. I have something VERY cool to tell you---the page above is from around 1958, before they had acid-free, lignin-free, etc. The entire album is still completely intact and in pristine condition! I dunno what kind of inks Mom used, but they have lasted.

Kolo has albums with black pages; so does Creative Memories (black refill pages, anyway).

My mom and dad both had those lovely photo albums. They were landscape format and they were held together by a string tied through large eyelets.
Unfortunately, they did not journal at all. I tried to record as much as I could before mom died.

Check out the Canson paper company. I believe they have a number of black paper books that are archival quality

I tried to record as much as I could before mom died. I had some like that.. but they were falling apart.. even so bad I couldn't save them.. so took them apart. Took the pictures out and I cut out the handwriting that went with the picture (white lettering).. my grandmother (I assume made these books).. the downside was she would use both sides of the paper so I had to really be careful to try to save all the handwriting I could on both sides. If I couldn't I would pick the best one.. lol. I did have fun scrapping those pictures.. I did them Smashbook style.

Thank you all so much! @ scrappintoee that is exactly what I’m talking about. That is a lovely page. I do love the “ embellishments”. So pretty and creative. Manilla paper. That’s the word I was looking for! And yes, I think mine had 2 holes with a heavy cord with tassels. Those simple scrapbooks were so easy to work with. Much less pressure for perfection. I stopped scrapbooking a long time ago, ( for lots of reasons ) but one reason was I just couldn’t keep up with all of the do’s and don’ts and this trend and that trend and what was “in” and what was “out”. It was a bit over whelming. I guess I’m a simple scrapper at heart

I did recently make a black page scrapbook with ephemera and white pen journaling! I used one of the Dylusions journals from Michaels, but in the end I wouldn’t recommend it. The paper was rather unforgiving - if you stuck something down and changed your mind it would tear as you peeled the thing up. And more importantly, and surprisingly given what the book was designed for, there was no extra space in the spine to make room for sticking things down. I had to slice out lots of pages in the back to keep it from totally busting its binding as I got later in the book. If I’d known/realized I would’ve sliced out pages randomly throughout the book to make room. It got really thick! Now I use a Travelers Notebook that comes with black pages, it has much better paper, much more forgiving, that I buy from Paper Penguin Co on Etsy. I did a quick search of “photo albums black pages” and it’s looks like Blue Sky Papers company has a couple of nice options. One is a Moleskine black page journal, but it might have the same issue of not having space in the binding once you actually paste things in. This one looks nice and the most like those older black page photo albums of days of yore www.blueskypapers.com/post-bound-black-page-photo-album.html You might also search Etsy - some people use them for weddings/guest books. And also search where photographers shop for photo albums. You could definitely make your own with black cardstock and bind it with a spiral binding machine / take it to an office supply store to be bound/ bind it yourself with stitching.

My Dad's scrapbook he made during his time in the Navy is exactly what you are describing. The book is almost 80 years old and there is no harm to any of the pictures or the limited journaling.
