I'm thinking I would like to try these but have no idea where to start - I've heard they are messy and I don't want to get overwhelmed.

Do you mean the brand Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists or just mists in general? There are lots of mist manufacturers these days and everyone has their favourites. Some have shimmer and some do not. I generally prefer "flat" non shimmery mists with the exception of Heidi Swapp Gold (Lame) that stuff is amazing. I feel I should buy a backup bottle because it is amazing, like liquid gold. I generally like all of Heidi's mists but hers are all shimmery, and as I said I generally prefer flat mists. Brands I like: Lindy's Stamp Gang (LOADS Of colours flat and shimmery, good price) Mister Huey's by Studio Calico (more expensive because they are a smaller size, and they don't seem to be making new ones lately but they perform well, most colours are flat without shimmer). Those 3 are my go to brands but you can also find them by Ranger (Dylusions); Tim Holtz has a new line to match his Distress Inks, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists, October Afternoon used to make them, 13Arts and I know there are more I am forgetting some...
As for what you can do with mists...LOADS check out Lindy's Stamp Gang on You Tube they do lots of tutorials mostly for Mixed Media. You can use them with stencils, masks, straight to paper, you can watercolour with them, make paint splatters, splotches, colour texture pastes...lots of things! They are sort of messy, but if you do mixed media anyway I wouldn't say they were messier than paint or anything. Most people who mist with them have a misting box if they are worried about mess. I just use an old pizza box from a scrapbook order, and spray in there. Good luck!

nana2callie - I found Tattered Angels first so I have quite a few of their bottles. I also have some SC Mr. Hueys but I think Heidi Swapp's Shine is my favorite. I agree with imperia - the Heidi Swapp Gold Lame is amazing! By far my favorite. You can find some Tattered Angels and Heidi Swapp mists at Michael's. Buy a bottle with a coupon and try it out. I've used them with stencils but it can get messy. I think my favorite technique is to use them as ink splatters. Here's one where I used it as ink splatter. I used Heidi Swapp Shine so you can kind of see the shimmer: Here's one from SC that's an awesome example of using it with a stencil or mask. These mists look more flat or matte: Hope that helps. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for sharing the layouts - they are terrific. So, I'm off to grab a couple of bottles just to play and I'll definitely try the Heidi Swapp Shine.

If you haven't tried the Prima Color Bloom mists, they are a must. I have I think every mist on the market, and the Prima ones are my favorite!
