We had a water leak in our back yard. It rains so much here, that DH only really figured it out on Sunday (it's probably been leaking for three or four months).
Our water bill had gone up about $10 or so over the past few months, but I thought the water board had raised the rates or something.
I read online that if you have water leak, get it repaired and bring the receipt up to the water district, they will credit your account for the amount you were over your normal use for the past few months. I figure ours started leaking in July; we were on vacation for a week and the difference in the water bill showed up the next month.
It's not a huge amount of money, but $30 is $30, right? Anyone done this?

Yes, we had a slow leak in a toilet which caused my water bill to skyrocket. We had it fixed, submitted the receipt to the utility co and they gave us a credit on the next bill.

We had an auto-fill system jam and were overflowing a pond. I'm not sure how long it was jammed, but based on our increased water bill we figure it was less than 24 hours. It is our responsibilty to maintain that system, including the extra cost if it fails and would never have occurred to me to ask the city for a credit.
You made me curious enough to check our city website, and the only thing I found is we will be fined for not fixing leaks within 72 hours (Level 2 Drought restrictions).

To me it would depend on where the leak was. I am surprised that they would give any credit for system inside your home that you are responsible for maintaining. That just seems odd to me. However, if the meter leaked then maybe i would as it is their responsibility to maintain the meter. I think it is more likely to find that i'd be fined for not immediately fixing the leak as with bc2ca's water company.
