I watched an article on tv today that was introducing the idea of cutting down on the amount of toilet paper produced and used in the world. Apparently production of toilet rolls accounts for 15% of the world's deforestation (Unfortunately I don't have a source to verify that but nevertheless it is obviously a vast amount.) So this segment was talking about cutting down by a) increased use of bidets and b) reusable cloths a bit like terry nappies/daipers! Now a lot of 'average' British homes simply don't have space for a bidet in the bathroom so even with the idea that they become the norm in new builds, it seems unlikely. Secondly - washable cloths!?! My reaction was obviously *shock horror* but millions of people do it with babies poo-y nappies so really, what's the difference in principle? As an aside - how do you pronounce bidet? I've always said bee-day, equal emphasis on the 2 syllables but today the presenter said it was bi'-daaay. Clipped first syllable, longer second. I just went on You Tube and it seems that we, as countries, pronounce it differently with UK preferring the first way and Americans preferring the second. I think the presenter didn't do enough looking into that ETA - yes, recycled paper should be a given if some of reasonable quality is available.

I say it the second way.
Having room for a bidet isn’t really an issue. Most of them nowadays are built into the toilet as an attachment as opposed to being a separate structure. And they can easily be added to an existing toilet. It’s no more difficult than changing a shower head. You can buy the kits on amazon.
Family cloth isn’t unheard of. Reusable period products (period underwear, cups, fabric pads) are all the rage, so I don’t think it’s a stretch to say family cloth will be next in popularity.

I used to always buy toilet paper made from recycled paper for this reason. Then the brand I bought was discontinued and all the other recycled brands I have tried are so scratchy and thin I stopped buying recycled. I still feel guilty about it.

I wouldn't mind the bidet thing.. but not a fan of reusable cloths... wouldn't that then be using more water to wash those.. and they would have to be rinsed first, then washed and dried. I don't know if that is really saving on the environment. What about recycle TP?? Edited to add.. BETTER recycle TP than what is currently out there.

I didn't know that about adapting a normal toilet - I'd be up for that and it would make it feasible for a lot more people which is good. Nor had I heard of family cloth...family?? Of course reusable period products are growing in popularity so I hope you're right that tp is next. Lets hope so!

Check out Who Gives A Crap, if you like. A little more expensive but made of bamboo and wrapped in paper, not plastic. Free shipping if you order a case. I tried a roll and was happy with the quality.

I am cognizant of recycling or reusing, in several ways.
Recycling toilet paper and reusable toilet paper, will never be a practice I partake in. Nor will limiting toilet paper squares quantity, while wiping.
There are some things I will not skimp on. Full wiping while using the toilet is one of them. I will use whatever amount of toilet paper is necessary, to wipe completely and fully.

But it doesn't leave us very clean does it. We wouldn't wipe a baby with dry paper then put another nappy on so more thorough cleaning would be an improvement anyway.

My previous home had 2 bidets and a urinal (don’t ask, we didn’t build it lol) The master had a toilet and bidet and the other bedrooms shared a bathroom with a toilet, bidet and urinal and then there was a powder room with a toilet. We only had girls so the urinal very rarely ever got used and we just weren’t fans of the bidet. My DDs’ guy friends did get a kick out of the urinals.
If recycled TP was of a nice texture I’d use it but I do prefer cushier paper. And it’s a NO for reusable cloth. I’d be more concerned about the use of water and bleach in laundering than the trees saved.
I tree planted as a summer job once...I’ve replaced a portion of my tree use lol!

A toilet trained person depositing normal bodily waste into a toilet and a diaper clad baby or toddler require different methods and degrees of wiping. I(or anyone) who is toilet trained, do not poop my panties and sit in it for short periods of time, nor is it as messy of an exit. There are of course, times when things are messier than usual. Using dry toilet paper is the standard method of wiping, unless extenuating circumstances(messier than usual) require further efforts, in which case a moist cloth can be used.

I really don't want to wash anything with shit on it or have anything with shit on it sitting waiting to be washed in a laundry basket. I've made a lot of changes in other areas but I'm keeping bog roll.

I don’t think I can get to the point of using reusable toilet paper. I just can’t.
I could probably adapt to using a bidet. It would take some getting used to. I am concerned about the amount of water it would use. I don’t know if it’s better or worse to use the water vs the trees for hygienic purposes. Maybe the bidet is the way to go, since to make the toilet paper a fair amount of water has to be used when they process the trees? I don’t know.

Japanese toilets are the best! I would love to have one. You use a lot less paper especially when you poop. They are pricey and you need an electrical outlet for the warm water. Our toilet closet doesn’t have an electrical outlet, but I guess we could put one in.

I think the cheap toilet paper you wind up using way too much. And I think people probably just mindlessly pull of a huge fist full of TP when it's not really needed.

Hemp grows MUCH faster than trees and produces more paper per acre than trees. IMO the use of bidets and reusable alternatives have a high water use that is problematic for areas with droughts and other water issues related to both fresh water availability and sewage disposal.

We have a bidet attachment in our master bathroom. DH got it for me because my RA affects my hands sometimes. It saves on TP use. It’s also really nice for cleansing during AF.

I don’t literally pop and pee in my underwear like a baby does. This isn’t even a apples to apples comparison. I will use the toilet paper I need. Reusable toilet paper will not happen in my house. Use more paper, or use more water for cleaning? I choose paper.

I have three words for the “family cloth” movement, and they would be Oh. HELL. No. Not in this or any other lifetime.

Timely discussion, seeing as someone at my place of work has managed to completely block one of the two available toilets whilst I was on leave ( I’m glad I wasn’t there to see my boss lose her mind- or deal with the mess!) She buys this cheap paper that is really thick and quilted - I honestly think it’s like putting kitchen towel down the pan. She is refusing to get the plumber in, so we staff are now having to use the same loo as her clients - which is not pleasant. Plus the blocked toilet is starting to pong ( the practice is small and all on one level ).
I couldn’t see myself adapting to using reusable TP- I can’t see it catching on at all. Having a J-pouch ( no Colon) I’ve looked into having a bidet put into my home toilet , but with no electricity in the room and all the extra plumbing needed, the cost was prohibitive. The reviews are very mixed on the forums I’m a member of, as well ( oh the joys of colon cancer!)

Not giving up my TP at this point. I have solar power with a battery, I recycle, use a reusable bag for groceries. I am planning on getting a compost bin and I look at a rain barrel every once in a while. I've smelled what the men in my house do to the air. I can't imagine that sitting around waiting to wash and I know that even if you rinse them, there will be some smell that remains. Nope.

We have a fancy toto toilet in the master bath. When we move, that and an induction hob, are the two upgrades we are doing to any new place. We love it. Wash with warm water stream, maybe a cups worth, and warm air dry. You cannot get more refreshed than that without hopping into the shower.

When worrying about the trees--remember that the large paper companies plant forests in order to harvest the trees...like corn crops, it just takes years to harvest the crop of trees while the corn/wheat etc. are harvested each year.
It is not the same result as cutting down the "wild" forests. The paper companies will cut the trees and come right back and plant again in order to wait years for the harvest.
