It's been a long time since I have been to a christening, but now our friends will start having grandchildren. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Ann

I went to a baptism last month. Nothing. The parents had a brunch and specifically asked for no gifts. Even without the parental request, I really think a christening/baptism doesn't need to be another opportunity for gifts. Kinda lessens the meaning. Send a card. Maybe a cross of some type or a bible if you have to gift.

I am not religious, so I don't give things like crosses or bibles. For both of my nephews baptisms I took a small 5x5 canvas, painted it a solid color and then pasted a piece of patterned paper on the front of the canvas. Then I used my cricut to cut out their names as well as their name meanings.
I just looked up their name meaning on google and picked two words to add to the canvas.

We've given a case of wine from the year of the child's birth.

I gave a rosary child's bracelet to my friend's daughter when she was baptized in the Catholic church. My boys received Max Lucado books, children's bibles galore, VeggieTales dvds, cash, and a cross from their grandparents when they were baptized at 5 and 3 years old.

It's a pretty big gift giving occasion in my family. We baptize early and it may be the first time the extended family has seen the baby. With multiple children, it's usually the only real gift giving occasion now that I think about it (we typically only do showers for the first). While some go the religious route with bibles, crosses, crossed themed jewelry - the vast majority bring clothes, toys, etc things you might find at a shower. I think it's because my aunts and great aunts are always looking for an excuse to buy more baby clothes.

I started savings accounts for my godchild and grandson. I will do the same when my new grandson is born in February.
Those are really the only christenings I've ever attended, but my niece is pregnant and due in December. That baby will most likely get a card and a savings bond.

I love this book as did my kids. It comes in hardbound and board book styles. God Gave Us You by Lisa Bergren
We were also given books of bible stories and toddler devotions that were nice. But it's been over 15 years and I didn't see those books in print anymore. Another favorite book of ours was Time for Bed by Mem Fox. It's not a religious book, but the pictures are beautiful, as is the text. Time for Bed by Mem Fox

Money or a classic children's book like a nice hardbound Winnie the pooh or alice in wonderland.
