I’ve been using up some of my fabric scraps to make fidget quilts. They are generally for people with dementia who would benefit from having tactile and sensory stimulation for restless hands. They have a variety of textures (wood, plastic, velvet, satin, lace), colours and interactive closures like buttons, zipper, clasp, snap, Velcro, etc. I have 3 but I have plenty of supplies to make more. If you have an elderly person with dementia in your life who would benefit from one of these quilts, please message me and I’ll send you one:)

That is really sweet of you and much needed. When relative was in the hospital and had temporary hospital induced dementia, she had something similar that the therapy department gave her to hold. It really kept her attention and comforted her.

I've made a few of these as well - I like seeing ideas from others and yours are really cool, muggins.
One of the local quilt shops has a free workshop every month and they supply all the materials to make them, except of course the machine and thread. They also send us home with some supplies so we can carry on creating them at home.

That is really sweet. However my MIL tried to eat the buttons and decorations off the quilt. She had no comprehension of what was edible, just like an infant, everything went into her mouth.

That's a very kind offer muggins. A friend of mine used to make fidget cushions which were very well received.

muggins These are beautiful quilts! I have heard of the fidget quilts but had never seen them before. How kind of you to be making them. I have been making a sensory quilt for young children, the uses different fabric (soft minky, rougher texture burlap) to help a young child deal with different "feels" on a quilt surface. And you used beautiful batik fabric in your quilts. I love batik fabric. gar I had never heard of a twiddle muff before. It is quite beautiful!

Yes, they may not be suitable for everyone. There are different stages of dementia and some people will not be able to use them. I originally made one for my friend’s elderly mother. She had lung cancer and dementia. On her first day in a care home she wandered off to the bathroom, slipped, and injured her tail bone. She wouldn’t stay in bed to recover, but the fidget quilt kept her occupied.

The top two are made with fabric I bought in Japan and the batik fabric was bought in Bali.

Oh my goodness, I love this idea so much! This is absolutely fantastic!
I worked with a few elderly clients before I left my job. A couple had specific plans in place to help keep their hands busy because of they weren’t busy, they would often clasp on to something in the palm of their hand and it would either hurt them, or we would see escalated behaviors when staff would eventually take the item away.
This would have been great for them.

muggins , this is such an amazing and kind thing you're doing. And the quilts are absolutely beautiful! I couldn't have said it better myself! TFS! I've never heard of these before for adults with dementia (only for kids with sensory issues), but it's a great concept and your execution of it is both beautiful and useful.

Oh wow I never saw/heard of these before. I wish I had! My mother would have loved this! She suffered for about eight years with dementia. Horrible disease. She passed away a little over three years ago.

What a wonderful idea! Love your versions. When my Nana was suffering from Alzheimer's, we bought a soft blanket and had all of our names (3 generations) machine embroidered on it. She used to sit and rub her hands over the names.

This is such a great idea. I'll have to keep it in mind as my mom progresses. I'm not sure she's to the point yet this would be beneficial. Although, she does love herself a soft blanket.

What a nice thing to do! I bet my mom would have loved that. My DD had a couple of little “taggy quilts” when she was little. Basically about a 15” quilted flannel square that had small ribbon loops with various textures sewed all around the edges. She loved them!

What a great idea and what a lovely offer. I don’t think my dad is quite there yet but now I know about this I’ll definitely think about getting one in the future.
