I was watching a YouTuber today that I enjoy. She mentioned that she is going to Patreon. Her fee will be $3 a month. Nope. Not spending $36 bucks a year on this. Another lady I enjoy left YouTube at Christmas and charges $1. I haven't joined hers (although much cheaper). I keep seeing on FB how many people are frustrated with Patreon and get shut out, it keeps freezing, doesn't show you where you left off on a video etc.
Sad to see people I enjoy leaving, but I am not going to pay for content that I can get for free (at least for now).
Anyone else not budging on paying for content? Mine isn't the dollar amount as much as I can see that by the end of this year, I could be paying $20 a month to watch videos.

I tried Patreon for a scrapbooker I really like but quit it. I just don’t like the limitations vs You Tube. I am not going to subscribe to anyone on Patreon in the future. Those subscription fees would add up quickly. I’d rather spend it on supplies. I truly appreciate the people on YT that share process videos and there are still many on YT working with the new rules. That’s where I’ll stay.

I have high regard for people who produce quality content. For example, I support journalists and pay for my NY Times subscription.
If a scrapbooker were producing high quality regular videos, I’d pay for it. I haven’t found any, though, that fit that bill on YT. I think the only thing that has come close are scrap classes from Shimelle or Victoria Marie.

I agree with it adding up. I follow card makers, scrapbookers, dog trainers, musicians, techie people just to name a few of my interests. If even a small portion of them moved to a pay to view platform, I could easily pay $25+ a month.
I appreciate the content, but I won’t pay for it.

Nope I haven't jumped on the patreon band wagon for a few reasons. I watch most of my YT on my tv so not sure I could do patreon on my tv. I do have a app on my firestick to cast stuff from my phone so it may be possible. Not sure anyone I watch on YT is worth the fee every month, plus there is lots on YT that's free. I would think the Youtubers who do both forums must struggle to produce great content for both. Between a fee for netflix, prime, satellite yeah can't see me adding another fee. How is the fee determined $1 vs $3 I wonder? Who were the channels?

People who set up their Patreon accounts set their own fees. Some start at $1, but most I see start between $3-$5. I’ve only signed up for one, but after a year, I may drop and maybe pick someone else to follow for a year. I don’t want to follow a lot.
The reason a lot of them are going to Patreon is because YouTube has changed their pay structure and censorship rules. I guess it is harder to earn $ on YouTube now so they are moving over to Patreon.

I willingly support podcast creators on Patreon which gives me access to ad-free and/or longer episode feeds as well as extra Patreon exclusives. However, they also have a free feed with ads for those who don't want to/can't pay a few dollars monthly. I enjoy that the main content is also made available at no cost for non-Patreons and that factors into my decision to become a Patreon. It's the socialist in me. It quickly adds up. I've thought every Patreon decision through seriously and broken out the calculator to make sure I could afford the extra patronage over a certain length of time. But I really do enjoy paying for content I *truly* love. Every podcast I've added to my list had been a regular free listen for at least 1 year before deciding to jump in. With every raise I've gotten at work, I've added a new podcast to my Patreon list. It's a fun way to redistribute a tiny bit of my (very small) personal wealth.

I didn't know about free content with ads. Maybe I'll check it out after all. It depends on the creator. Some like to offer the main content for free + exclusives and an ad-free feed for Patreons. Others go down the Patreon-exclusive road. I like to support those who offer free content with some extra perks for Patreons.

(Okay, this turned into a rant. I didn't realize I felt so strongly. LOL I'm not even sure that I really do. But, I just watched a video with someone (a booktuber, not a scrapbooker) whining about their time spent creating YT content. Boo hoo. Hobbies do take up time.)
Anyway ....
For me, Scrapbook YT was all about the fun. I mainly watch hobbyist scrapbookers. There is no one who has any content that needs me to go from free (with ads) to paying $. My view is that most of the people that I watch on YT started as scrapbookers who wanted to extend their own hobby, i.e., both scrapbooking and YT are their hobbies. As they got more subscribers, they got to monetize. Good for them. But, when I have to start hearing how they need me to pay them for them to do their hobbies of scrapbooking and YTing, I'm out. My money needs to go to my supplies not some other scrapbooker's supplies.
Are there nuances to this, sure. I have purchased scrapbookers classes. There are people who've turned it into a business, but were clear about that. I chose what I wanted to spend my money on. I didn't just hand them over money so they could scrapbook at their own whim. There's a difference between that and me paying someone to work on their own scrapbooks.
If someone wants to make a buck off their scrapbooking, fine. But, be a professional and clear about that from day one, not a hobbyist who did it for fun at first, and now feels owed something for previously free content. We watch the ads, subscribe and like. That's what a hobbyist gets for their YT hobby. You want $$, then you need to offer content above and beyond scrapbooking your kids on video. Really, someone asking us to now hand over our hard earned cash for the privilege of watching them scrapbook is just gross.

YouTube has been a big staple for me in a lot of areas for over a decade. I enjoy watching videos, creating videos and the ability to chat with subbies in the comments.
So I don't see myself ever leaving. I have ONE online class and quietly promoted it. I don't have the view count to montetize yet. But if I get there I probably will throw ONE ad the beginning. Not so much for me to bank roll my hobby lol, seriously more for curiosity on how long it takes to earn a dollar on a scrapbook video but I also don't mind YT themselves getting slme pennies too because they offer me a FREE video hosting site with built in viewers.

I like to purchase classes from scrapbookers. I enjoy that I can download the classes and watch them when I like/follow along as I can. I have purchased from many scrapbookers. I have never paid for Patreon. In principle I have nothing against it. If someone can get paid for the content they put out there then all the better for them. I prefer classes as sometimes (oftentimes actually) YouTubers are not actually good teachers. They are people that enjoy scrapbooking and I like to watch them create. If they are a good teacher and something that I think I would enjoy I would consider Patreon.

I support Inkie Quill and Victoria Marie on Patreon, as well as a cartoonist I really like. I've been supporting all three for quite a while now. Victoria often hosts online hangouts for her Gold and Platinum tiers where she crafts and chats with the viewers, some of us craft along, or do other things while chatting. Adele (Inkie Quill) does live streams on Youtube, for free. However, both women provide a LOT of quality content on Patreon that, in my opinion, add to the experience I get to enjoy on Youtube. More videos, longer videos, printables, sketches, all sorts of things. They're both still very active on Youtube but Patreon allows them to provide additional content should the viewer want to access more. I spend $25/mo for the both of them together ($30 if you include the cartoonist) and am happy to do so because I feel that what they are providing is worth the money.
I appreciate that there is a choice, and that I don't HAVE to give either of them money to watch their content if I don't have to. It isn't a matter of leaving Youtube for something else. But I enjoy them enough to support their gigs as both are doing this full time, professionally, and I like the communities that they've created.

I enjoy watching Janet from RTS on you tube and now, Patreon. To me, she’s worth the $1 a month. I don’t mind paying for the content and enjoy that it’s ad free. I understand why others are not willing to spend $, but it’s worth it to me. I really like her organizational ideas and hope that she might share her room on Patreon. I don’t think there are any other you tubers that I would follow to Patreon. Even if I did, I think $5 total per month would be my limit

I’m not paying to watch someone fumble, ramble, dig through their supplies and repeat themselves because they are unprepared. We wouldn’t support other businesses that produce that type of product. Now there seems to be a trend to make longer videos. Darn it, I do not have 45 minutes to over an hour to just sit and watch someone else scrapbook or sort stuff And the chatter, ugh!

Really, Janet from RTS is the only one so far that has moved that I'm really willing to follow. And I've been on the fence about subscribing cause I can't watch it on my smart TV. But it's been 6 weeks and I'm really starting to miss Janet so I think I might cave and pay the buck a month and put it on my laptop and connect it to my TV with an HDMI cable....
That's about the only person I'm willing to follow. Too much free content to pay anything more!

I've been an NPR supporter since my first job out of college. I happily pay for quality classes (scrappy & art classes) but I get annoyed when I've purchases a class and the video quality isn't good. I've been a supporter of the Awesome Ladies Project for ages. I don't support anyone on Patreon but I might depending on the scrapper. I love sleepingbooty philosophy. That's a great way to think about it. I think it absolutely sucks the way YouTube re-did their rules so the smaller channels get little to no revenue. It was a shit move by a big corporation that's making tons of money on the ads and by harvesting the data of the folks watching the videos.

I support a scrapbooker on PATREON at $10 a month. I'm considering whether or not it's worth the value. I will probably end it this month. She films her videos so that they can be viewed via YOUTUBE. I really like that option. Ultimately, I think I would rather pay for a class like FULL TILT BOOGIE or REMAINS OF THE DAY by. Mary Ann Moss . Thanks for spurring me to make a better financial investment!

Obviously, we all have different ideas of value. Personally, I don’t like any you tube hobbyist enough to pay for content. Especially when the free content available from the professionals is so good (Ali Edwards, Shimelle, Jennifer Maguire, Kristie Marcotte, Kristina Werner, design teams from various product lines). Do any Patreon scrappers not offer free content? I just don’t find enough value to pay them to scrapbook or make cards while I watch.

I love Janet @rts but am not following her to Patreon for these reasons: I am tired of everyone trying to turn their content into subscriptions - recurring charges. It's happening to TV/cable too. I really prefer the affiliate link type compensation for those You Tube videos I watch or blogs I read. Jen Mcguire "sells" me on something, I click her link and she gets a little commission = that seems fair to me. I don't need to pay her $$ every month whether I have time to look at her stuff or not.
I have found it to be a better value if I can pay for something such as a class or a set period of time. I rarely finish classes that are spread out over a long period of time. I used to like Big Picture Scrapbooking before it became a subscription. If Patreon would let me pay for 6 months with no auto-renew I might consider it. Otherwise, no thanks. (Besides, it looks like that platform has many operational issues.)
The other thing that annoys me to no end is that her followers want to say that she's not really making money. She is only charging a $1 because Patreon requires her to charge something. She is doing it for the love of the craft. Come on now, with thousands of subscribers, she is making money. And I am totally okay with that - she does the work she deserves to be paid and she gets to determine how she is paid. She is also free to figure out if it was worth her while in the long run to make the change when it won't work for all her followers. But half as many paid subscribers is better than twice as many free subscribers - so go Janet go.
I am just not into the cult of personality/celebrity. Even if I watch a crafter all the time, I would not consider them my friend without knowing them personally in real life. And so I don't take their business decisions personally. Which I guess is why I don't care what the heck Becky Higgins does, I will just deal with whatever PL products I can find.

Just because she's not really making money on YOUR subscription doesn't mean that she isn't making money when everyone is pooled together, lol. People are dumb...Janet is not some sort of martyr for the art of scrapbooking.

I'm not going to pay to watch scrappy videos. First I don't religiously watch any one person.
Secondly, I don't have the time to watch paid content.
And for a host of other reasons as well that I'm too lazy to type out. 😀
I think there's a lot of really good and interesting scrap videos on YT.
I've actually found a couple new (at least to me) that I've been enjoying, but I'm horrible at remembering names. I just find them again in my history.
But if people want to pay for content that's their choice.
And if people want to charge for content that's their choice as well.
But don't make excuses for doing it.
And this is probably old and I'm late to the game. Again. Right?
😁

I find everyone who goes to Patreon I just stop watching. I used to watch Inkie Quill and Mercy Tiara and RTS but as soon as they moved over, I just move on. I am not about to start some ongoing subscription no matter what the cost and then have to learn a completely different platform when I like YouTube. I have no problem with them doing it, more power to them to get paid, I just lose interest as there is so much great content out there now.

I feel this way too, but I know that Janet filled a niche for a lot of people in scrapping. She really seems sincere and kind, and I think she provides a lovely community for those that love scrapping and want a safe, happy place to create and feel like they are with like-minded folks. I still follow her on FB and see what people create. That is good enough for me. I miss her organizational videos, but I think she moved on from those to creating more. I do wish her the best of luck because she deserves it in my opinion.

I have a YouTube channel that I've been posting scrapbook videos on for about 2 years. I don't think my content is enough to ask for people to pay for it. I understand there are some people who believe they have really good content, but I started my channel because there wasn't a lot of double page scrappers. There does seem to be fewer and fewer video that I want to watch.
