We went to Vegas for the weekend for our anniversary. We boarded and I sat down in my aisle seat. It stunk like coffee because planes often do. I put my backpack under the seat in front of me and waited for about five minutes. Window seat lady looks at me and taps me and says, "Oh, don't put your backpack down there. I spilled my entire coffee under the storage area." So I pull my backpack out and it is sopping wet on the backside. It had that nice foam on it to make it comfortable. Ugh. Now I know accidents happen, but don't you think you could put you damn phone down long enough to let the person know before they put their personal item in that space? When the flight attendant came by, spiller asked for a towel. Lady brought back a stack of maybe two inches of paper towels from the bathroom. They were all soaked within a few minutes. So I sat on the plane with the stench of cold coffee (really can't stand the smell of coffee in the first place) on the paper towels at my feet and the flight attendant put my bag overhead. When we landed, my backpack was still wet, still stunk and the lady continued to play a game on her phone. Ugh. I'll take a person who reclines back two inches any day over that situation.
When we got home, I had to put my bag in the bathtub and soak it. The water looked like tea. I am sure it was a good combination of coffee and three years of travel. The bright side is my backpack is now much cleaner.

Ugh! That would piss me off. I might even have said something like "You could have said something before I put my bag there."

And yes, people on their phone and not aware of their surroundings is a big pet peeve of mine. I was just glad we were on our way home.

She should've cleaned it up, not just left it there!😡

Ugh that really sucks. I’m glad you were headed home. It would really suck if you were on your way to your vacation and had to deal with that clean up.

I would be mad. Accidents happen, but that lady should have warned you the second you started to sit down that she had spilled coffee under the seat. I hope nothing inside your backpack got wet.

How rude and disrespectful of that person.

She should've cleaned it up, not just left it there!😡 Or signaled for a flight attendant instead of playing on her phone.

I just be getting old, because I do believe I would have gone off on her. I am getting old and I think it caused me to give her some grace. People spill stuff. I am always kind of surprised at the number of people who bring open drinks on a plane. I am a water bottle girl or a plastic bottle person. I need to keep it locked up because I am not perfect. But to not tell me it happened? She asked me at the end of the flight if she should pick up the coffee soaked paper towels. I told her that leaving them would be the only way that the cleaners would know something had been spilled. I hope they made some effort to clean it up after we deplaned.

She should have warned you immediately upon you arriving at your seat. That was very thoughtless of her to be too preoccupied to notice you placing your bag there. I'd have been horrified if I caused that to happen to someone.

Am I the only one who would have asked the flight attend to have the airline pay for the cleaning of my backpack. Shit happens. The woman next to you should have offered but she didn’t. The plane wasn’t clean. Yes, the flight attend didn’t know yet and it’s not her fault but really the plane was dirty when you sat down. And it’s not like the flight attend would use her own money. The whole conversation with the flight attend would have happened in front of this woman.
I once had the person next to me get my purse dirty. It was an accident. The airline paid for the cleaning of my purse. The flight attendant offered ASAP.

The airline paid for the cleaning of my purse. The flight attendant offered ASAP. She was too busy playing games on her phone for two hours. She took her earbuds out once to tell me about the spill. Then she called several people to tell them. She was pissed that she didn't get her 16 oz coffee. She never mentioned that it spilled in another passenger's space and not hers. I am one who generally doesn't get too worked up about things. I knew I could wash the backpack in the tub. The thing I was the most worked up about was the overwhelming smell of coffee (which I hate). It smelled like wet cardboard that sat in trash can for three days!

I'd have been horrified if I caused that to happen to someone. Exactly. If I had done that, I would have told the person to use my space for her backpack and put my personal item elsewhere.

I would have been so mad! Who the heck does that and then doesn’t tell the staff immediately so someone doesn’t wreck their belongings by putting them under there? What an ass.

That was completely unacceptable. She knew she unloaded a full coffee into the area set aside for YOUR belongings. Where you are instructed to put your items. That she couldn’t stay off her phone long enough to tell you in time is absurd.
