My friend made a movie.. Chinatown Rising.. and it is showing in LA and Santa Ana next saturday and then in Seattle on March 7. chinatownrising.com/screenings for tickets.
Harry took film he had shot in the 1970's and 80's of student and community activism in Chinatown in San Francisco. He and his son added current interviews with those involved in the student movements, and the first large community actions to help immigrants, develop senior housing and to have bilingual education in the schools. It is a slice of history you won't find in the history books.. and it is an award winning film that they have now shown around the world. Harry was the director of a Presbyterian community development center in Chinatown for 40 years.
The Los Angeles times did a great review of the film.
check it out!!

I look forward to checking it out. I lived in San Francisco during that time and spent loads of time in Chinatown. It will be fun to see what I recognize.

they hope to recut it for pbs, and for classroom useable length with teaching materials to support it. it was a 4 yr project to get it out the door. Harry was director of Cameron House.. the Presbyterian mission in chinatown founded a long time ago to rescue abused women. He attends my church. (we have 35 members...)
