Hello! We have a trip to Africa scheduled for this Summer. We need to purchase travel insurance ? Any companies you would recommend? What kind of coverage should we look for?
Thanks for any recommendations! Dawn

I've never traveled abroad, but right now I have a trip scheduled to New Orleans that I wish I had bought insurance for. I came down with shingles 3 weeks ago and if I had insurance, I would have postponed it. So now, I'll be on vacation with shingles on my face and eye. lovely.

I’m not an expert but I’ve used insuremytrip.com a couple times (never had to file a claim though). It’s easy to navigate and compare plans and when I’ve had questions they’ve been very helpful.

I always use a travel agent when I go overseas so I just use whoever they recommend. I'm assuming that you're going on some sort of organized trip? maybe going over there solo but meeting up with a group there? I would ask whoever is organizing the group part.
Also, where are you going?

We've used Allianz to insure several trips. We've never had to make a claim but we've heard they're good to work with when you do have a claim.

We have used Allianz before but haven't had to file a claim so far. There was a good review of the main companies on The Points Guy last summer that you might find helpful. Top Travel Insurance Providers

Check if you credit card has any travel insurance perks. I was surprised that mine does for the parts of my trip I’ve booked. Although, admittedly I haven’t read the fine print yet 😆

With the current talk of pandemic, I would upgrade to the "cancel my trip for any reason" insurance just in case.

it can easily cost $100,000 for medical evacuation.. so take that in account.

I've never really purchased it, but my mom does when she flies with us. I don't know all the different options, but I recall her mentioning canceling for ill family. Who exactly is covered was the question. Maybe it's a nonissue, but it is something I'd check.

I'm another Insuremytrip user! I will say that I tried to purchase insurance for our summer trip and couldn't find a cancel for any reason option for our dates. This is the first time I have had that problem. Our trip is 3 months away. Hopefully this virus is contained by then.

I buy a yearly policy from Allianz. I have never needed to file a claim before until now. We were scheduled to leave on a cruise the day my sister died. Filling out the claim form online couldn’t have been any easier. I am waiting on the death certificate and once we get that, we will get a full refund.
