So I'd decided that I'd never buy an electronic cutter because it seemed like too much work in figuring out how to use it and recurring cost of mats and blades. But I just got an email from Michaels showing the Cricut Joy and now I reconsidering my decision! For one, this new machine is so cute, lol. In seriousness though, I really like the small size, especially since I mostly do card making. I thought I would ask more experienced crafters if there is much point in getting this machine, especially since Cricut is advertising it as a companion machine to the Cricut Explore Air etc, and not necessarily to be the only machine one owns. Interested to hear your thoughts! cricut.com/en_us/machines/cricut-joy/joy.html

2peasrefugees.boards.net/thread/102796/cricut-joyThere were a few opinions here But I don’t know that anyone had one- I don’t, my opinion if it being too small & too expensive is based on their video Btw I think you’ll still have to be replacing blades

There was a debate on the Cricut Joy in a previous thread.
In my opinion, it’s overpriced for what you get. I have multiple cutters (Silhouette Cameo, Cricut Explore Air 2, and Scan N Cut). The Cricut Joy’s size is the only advantage, IMO. The price will probably come down eventually, but right now it is priced very high for what limited features it offers.
I mostly make cards, too, although I do want to get back to scrapbooking. I use my Cameo 3 all the time for card making. I can cut multiple colors and pieces for my cards all at once instead of one color at a time.
A Silhouette Portrait is a bit bigger than the Cricut Joy, but it has a lot more capability. If Cricut still sold the Baby Bug or Create, I would recommend one of them as another choice, but those machines were discontinued long ago.

This is just my personal opinion: I nominated my daughter during their recent contest and she won a #cricutjoy and I was lucky enough to get one too. I own many Cricut machines, but this was is so portable and it uses smart materials (no mat required) and can cut vinyl 4' long (and I believe longer. I was planning on buying one even if I didn't win one. I am hoping to use it to journal when I scrapbook (something I have struggled with doing for over 20 years). Yes I can use my other machines for that, but the portability and size of this one I feel will make it easier. There is going to be bundles for sale on HSN's craft day on March 3rd. Anna Griffin has more information here: Anna Cricut Joy

Thank you all! I didn't realize that this was actually quite expensive compared to the bigger machines. Off to read the other thread in more detail too.

I do a lot of card making and use my Cameo for that. Way too small IMO. If you want a slightly smaller machine, I'd go with the Silhouette Portrait 2.

I nominated my daughter during their recent contest and she won a #cricutjoy and I was lucky enough to get one too. Congrats! If they want to give me one I would take it but I already have the Cricut Bug, the Expression, the Explore Air 2, plus a Sidekick and Big Shot so I really don't want to spend money on another cutting machine.

Oh, I definitely could find a use for one, possibly more often than my cameo. I scrap small now. I know I could use it. BUT I’m not about to pay that much for it right now especially since I have a cameo. Not a necessity for my budget right now.
If you want me to have both ( like I have a side kick & a big shot, neither of which did I pay more than $75 for ) then the smaller one has to be smaller priced accordingly. That’s how my brain works- less versatile sizes = less value price wise to me in my opinion.
We’re I to see one for a more reasonable to me price point, I would most likely snap it up. But right now, at that price I can’t justify it.

The Cricut Joy has just arrived in NZ. NZ$400 (US$250) in the local big box store. Umm no thanks.

It's on HSN today, for some reason I thought you didn't need a mat but I saw she was using one. Frankly I just kind of flipped past it, too much Anna Griffin and repeats. I sure miss the good old days of the QVC scrapbook shows with Lisa Bearnson and David Venable.

So I've been looking at reviews and have a few thoughts.
Pros: 1. I really like the compact size, for some reason it makes it seem a lot less intimidating. 2. I like that it basically narrows the focus on smaller crafts. I don't do much crafting besides card making, so the bigger cutters have always felt like a bit of a waste for that. Even the ideas I'm getting for other crafts (banners etc) seem doable with this size. 3. It sounds like the app is quite easy to use.
Cons: 1. The price!! It is $220 here in Canada, which is way more than I am willing to pay. 2. The cost of materials seems to be more expensive compared to the cost for the bigger cutters. 3. Though it seems like the app is easy to use, I don't know enough about Design Space to be able to tell if that is actually the case, have also read some things about it being buggy.
So I think I will either wait to buy it used or at the very least on sale.

You can't use the same pens or blades from the other machines.

I saw the display at Michael’s. The thing is so small and cute. I don’t need one, but if I needed a machine for quick small projects, I might consider it. I like that it doesn’t take up a lot of desk space.

Lately I've been doing a lot of 3D/box/pop up cards and my 12" Cameo is great for that! The footprint of the Cricut Joy does seem nice, but just wanted to add that the larger cutter means that you can make more complex cards, if that's something you're into.

My first thought was no way, not at that price. However, I have been seriously tempted today by the HSN card bundle they've been offering with the flex pay option. I'm heading out for awhile and hoping either I regain my sanity or they sell out before I get home.

That's definitely a good point! But personally, I think I would get a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities with a bigger machine and just not get anything done. It sounds silly, but the smaller size seems to lower the stakes... If only it wasn't so ridiculously priced! Fingers crossed for there being an amazing sale soon

I was interested in it because of the size. I mostly make cards now and thought if I could keep this on my desk at all times it would be nice. I wanted to make sure I could use the Foil quill in it and I could not find a definitive answer, but I think not. Which is a bummer.

I have a bunch of questions about what this machine can actually do but all the reviews at this point are too busy shilling it instead of showing different examples/capabilities. Or they're over an hour long and I don't have the patience to sit through them because of all the rambling...

I'm not wasting my money, especially after I did some cost comparisons. Sure, we all want to not need a mat but that's really deceptive. You have to buy a special roll of "whatever" that has a one time use mat already attached so you're still using a mat. The good part is that you can make things that are longer than 24" but how often will you be doing that? I do think the cutting mat they have that lets you slide part of the card into it is kind of cute but, really, just cut the card out on the full size machine & fold it yourself. Another way for them to get you to pay extra.

This machine is at Target, which is weird because I don't think I ever saw Target carry Cricut. Walmart yes.
