It's on CNN right now. They don't have a lot of news yet, but they are promising that as soon as more is known they will let us know.

CBC is in wall to wall (Peter Mansbridge has taken over the coverage) and it sounds crazy. I have friends in the press corps on the hill and I know they are going nutso right now (not going to call or text, they are too busy to deal with that and I'm sure they are getting inudated by people). I'm guessing some are in lockdown in centre block and some are probably on the proximity. Sheer insanity. I've never seen so many RCMP on the Hill before. One camera guy reports hearing 50 shots on the hill.

On CNN there is a journalist in the parliment building stating that there was a motionless body in the building (as in he was shot).

I didn't see this post before I made mine. We were in Ottawa last week. This just sickens me.

The War Memorial is one of my favourite places in Ottawa. Despite being in a very busy area, it's so peaceful and lovely. So it makes me sad that it's the backdrop of this.

He described many shots fired inside the building and that they are clearing the building room by room and the journalist hasn't been allowed to leave yet.

So far I've only heard of one confirmed injury and that was the original soldier.

That's why I'm watching CBC - Mansbridge is being extremely careful to report the facts. Exactly. Mansbridge is reporting that a CP reporter on the Hill is saying that police are looking for 2 or 3 gunman on the hill. But they are being very careful about anything they say.

Okay, NOW there is confirmation that one shooter is dead and that there is more than one. But police is making the reporters move again because they suspect someone is on a roof with a high powered rifle (perhaps the Laurier).

I'm absolutely shaking right now. I was there a few days ago with my daughter and husband. The War Memorial is a sacred space. I served in the Canadian military for 11 years and I have friends leaving for Kuwait today. We shouldn't have to worry about our soldiers as they stand guard duty at a Memorial in our Nation's Capital.

What the frack? That's twice this week we've had soldiers targeted - what is going on??? Apparently this kind of thing is another type of retaliation by radical groups to countries who are involved in the bombing campaign in the Middle East. We raised our threat level in September because of concerns about returning jihadists and their sympathisers and days later arrested five people who were plotting to do the very same thing as is happening in Canada now. I saw on a news site earlier that Australia has been threatened as well.

But we don't know that these are jihadists. We have no idea who is doing this in Ottawa. There has been no talk about jihad or who these people could be. Yes, the hit and run two days ago was a jihadist who was on the RCMP radar but we cannot begin to speculate that this is a jihadi attack. There are numerous possibilities of who this could be. But this situation is much too fluid at the moment to place blame on anyone.

It could be separatists (though they've been quiet for a while now), or be someone/group with an issue with the government (there are certainly some of those), or it could be a sociopath who just wanted to kill people and make a splash. Or it could be a jihadist. At this point, who knows. Like my friends who want to call this a terror attack, it is too early to be using this kind of verbiage. As an aside, David Common at CBC Radio is now reporting that all CFB bases across the country are now closed to the public as a precaution though there is no proven or official connections between the events.
