We just decided last weekend that the kids could go to New York to visit grandparents over spring break. But now dh doesn’t think they should go due to the coronavirus. What are your thoughts about this? Have you altered spring break travel plans within the US due to the virus?

I was just talking to our DD in Kentucky. Our 8th Gr DGD is going on a school trip over spring break to NYC and Washington. At this point, the trip is still on.

DS is supposed to fly home for spring break in two week, but we are doing the "wait and see". Our tickets are via Southwest so we can cancel at the last minute without a penalty.

Is there an outbreak in New York?

Assuming they are healthy, I would let them go.
Edited to add: We have not changed any plans for state side travel over Spring Break. While our plans do not include going to the west coast, we will be in Las Vegas, DFW airport and Houston Airport.

My only reservation would be about the grandparents' health. If they're going to be out in large crowds a lot more than they usually would be, that's less than ideal. There's not much COVID-19 in NY, so it's not a huge concern, but since older people have worse outcomes, I'd not want them to unnecessarily expose themselves. I would not worry about the kids, assuming they're not immune-compromised.

We are traveling from Northern Virginia to Utah next month for spring break. We are still planning on going unless something drastic happens.

If I were in your shoes I would cancel, for both their sakes, and that of their grandparents.

I'm going to NYC with my 66 year old mother and 18 yo next week and have no intentions of canceling. FWIW, WHO says there have been very few documented cases of Covid-19 infections in anyone under the age of 20 and the few cases that have been reported have not been severe.

I'll talk to DH more about it and see what exactly his worry is. I don't know if he is worried about the kids getting the virus, or being exposed and not being able to get back, or something else. I will also talk to MIL. We don't have tickets yet but she wanted to get them ASAP.

Is there an outbreak in New York? There are cases in NYC and a larger outbreak in Westchester County, a suburb.

My sister and her family just canceled a Caribbean cruise that they were supposed to leave for tomorrow AM. I’m probably canceling my April trip to the East Coast. Not because I’m worried about getting sick (I can do that right here) but because I don’t want to get stuck so far from home. My sister is worried about getting quarantined somewhere.

Las Vegas is now offering free nights in their better hotels as opposed to their cheaper places. Must be suffering some.

We are booked at the Wynn but I told DH if the price was right (free) I would move somewhere else.

We are supposed to leave in 1 week for Seattle from CA. I’m not really worried about the kids (10 and 13) or me and DH (both nurses who will probably get exposed at work eventually) but about 78yo grandma coming and 67yo MIL. We are also thinking some of the sights we want to see may close. Also, potentially being quarantined far from the comforts of home in a hotel doesn’t sound great. We will probably decide Monday what to do.

Is there an outbreak in New York? Yes...but all cases are tied to one person...a lawyer who infected his family etc. He was in Italy

I would send them, especially since they’re not in a hotel and staying with family. We have not cancelled our spring break plans. We are booked to travel internationally next week. We were on Lufthansa but they cancelled our flight yesterday as the country we’re flying to has restricted entry from so many European countries. We are now booked straight from Canada with no European stops and as of right now it’s not an issue.
Many of our friends are flying to the US for spring break and we just had friends return from LA yesterday. As of today our school’s European spring break trips are still on but i guess they still have 1 week to cancel.
I think if you ask many people you’ll get many answers and you have to do with both you and Dh are comfortable with. I think everyone has a different comfort level and will react different in this type of situation.

I wouldn’t get on a cruise ship right now. Other than that, I would travel to most places and I would let my kids travel.
If your husband is uncomfortable with the kids traveling, though, I would cancel the trip. I think his feelings should be respected. I would want my spouse to respect my feelings and not try and convince me otherwise if I was nervous about my kids traveling, especially since the travel was unnecessary.

What are your thoughts about this? Have you altered spring break travel plans within the US due to the virus? OR is your DH concerned that his mom's husband has health issues that might cause your kids some distress. Unless the grandparents are healthy, I wouldn't send my kids alone. New York is far away for kids that may not have traveled there before, on their own, with grandparents that might not be the healthiest. Let them have fun at home, with their friends during spring break. They are too young to be care-givers to grandparents.

My daughter is going with the band on a school trip to Orlando in Florida, and my other daughter is going to Daytona a week later for collegiate National Dance Team competition. Both trips are on! I can't picture either being cancelled, so we all may go!

I’m in Washington state so probably a bit more alarmist...but I would not be going anywhere. This is only ramping up and we honestly don’t have any idea what the real spread is since there has been inadequate testing throughout the country. That’s my two cents. I should add that I am a healthcare professional with a background in public health so I may be a bit more informed than the general public.

I live and work in NYC. Yes, people have been diagnosed, but there's no reason for businesses to close. My company is using more Lysol wipes than usual to be extra cautious. I think you'll be fine here, just wash your hands. I've also read that cash can be a carrier, I don't know if this is true or not but I'd use your card if you can.
