I can’t speak for the mass stockpiling, but I always tried to have extra in the house for snow storms and the like because four people were not normally home 24/7 and using the bathrooms 2-3 times more than in a typical day. When someone is home for only 3 waking hours vs 15+, you use a lot more supplies!

Because there were some news stories coming out of China about families in quarantine who ran out of toilet paper and stories about a toilet paper shortage in Hong Kong. I think people are justifiably concerned about a supply chain disruption, not just in products but also in the packaging that lets manufacturers bring those products to market.

being a backpacking instructor.. I know that many distance hiking women use "pee rags" for urine.. the bandana used lives on the outside of the backpack, where the uv rays sterilize it and dry it.. I can think of ways to use little paper.I would be desperate to do this at my house... My father, who is a doctor, says the same about freaking out about kleenex. He says buy a ton of cheap handkerchiefs, use it and bleach it. I have extra tp I keep in the hurricane kit. Because if you can't get out, the trucks can't get-or if the power is out the stores are closed. So really being prepared is the way to go. TP, papertowels, paperplates/plasticware, etc. is helpful to have one hand if the power is out.

We've had 10 good winter storms this season. It isn't uncommon for people to go a little overboard with something they know could land them inside for a few days. With a virus that is consistently growing at a pretty rapid pace, I think people are even more concerned.

We buy our tp at Costco, but I heard through a local Facebook page they're sold out. Ordinarily wouldn't worry, but we're down to open packs in the bathrooms.
One shortage I haven't heard about but apparently is real is zinc products like Zicam. I used up almost all of ours this week with what I thought was a cold. But then started feeling REALLY crappy, and wanted to hit the store to replenish it and get some other stuff before going home to bed. Got my cart to the car, and realized the Zicam was under my unused shopping bags and I hadn't paid for it. Groaning, I returned it to the store and stuck it on an endcap with other cold products because I didn't have the energy to return it to its proper location. DH started feeling bad yesterday, so went out in search of Zicam. Both Target and a pharmacy were sold out but he found a lone box of Zicam on an endcap with other cold products. He said this same grocery store, that had had multiple zinc products when I was there two days earlier was also completely sold out, except for the one I unknowingly left for him. Does zinc even work for coronavirus?

Costco finally put a limit on certain items so that people couldn’t hoard the popular stuff. I’m glad they did.

Y'all, I HAD to go get toilet paper today as we were down to our last roll. I've been procrastinating because I was dreading it so. Went to Costco and told DH before I left that if that parking lot looked bad there was NO way I was going in there. Parking lot was pretty calm for any Saturday. There was a limit of 2 per day for a bunch of things like TP and water. There was lots of toilet paper in that area and I was the only one there at that moment! I was seriously shocked. There was also plenty of water. I didn't see anything that looked cleaned out.
This is just a random tp availability report from Costco in Brandon, FL.

My husband (who has a legitimate all American cold) went to the grocery store today, because we forgot to get toilet paper, down to 3 rolls, 4 people living in the house. No one looked at him odd, and it was only 1 4-pack, but he also was getting paper towels. It was time for sticking up on cans of stuff for our basement pantry, but he passed on that for today. He did say there wasn’t any hand sanitizer, which he uses in his classroom.

I don't know how toilet paper specifically became the focus of this but it's crazy. I just bought my regular supply last Sunday.
I figure it will benefit me in the long term though - because when the buying frenzy is over, toilet paper will be on sale really cheap because no-one will be buying it, as everyone else will have 3 years supply at home. Then I'll be able to swoop in and buy it at the el-cheapo pricing!

I think I probably had a more than adequate supply of toilet paper. But, I was at Menard's looking for some other things and grabbed a big pack of TP and a big pack of paper towels, since my supply of those was a little lower than I thought. Doesn’t hurt to have them just in case.

You can also find tp at business supply stores and restaurant supply warehouses. My mom went crazy the other day and bought everyone in the family each 48 roll bundles at some restaurant supply store. No lines or limits. She got me a tray of 30 eggs plus 48 rolls for $20. Not bad.
