Can someone explain why buying toilet paper as a reaction the COVID is a thing? I mean, I like a clean bottom as much as the next Pea ... but I don't understand why this particular product is the one that people want to stock up on.

Because if families are quarantined for weeks, they’ll need essential items like toilet paper. A friend of mine in Bangkok is currently quarantined for 14 days with 5 kids and a puppy just because her DH came back from a business trip from Hong Kong. They do not want to run out of tp.

Tp is hard to do without comfortably.
People are already clearing store shelves of hand sanitizer & tp here. People who find tp are buying large quantities to ensure that if the supply chain breaks down, they won't do without.

I also think in my area people have been told for years to create an emergency kit in case of earthquake or other natural disaster and haven’t. Covid19 has been a wake up call to get their butts prepared.
Here it’s been a run on TP, water, wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, paper towels, bleach and rubbing alcohol. Rice, beans and other canned goods are low in my store.

I was watching the show Frontier House (circa 2004) with my kids recently. All the participants got to take one item from modern times to the prairie or at least name the one item they'd take, I can't remember. The teenagers actually smuggled in makeup. Anyway, the smart lady wanted toilet paper. I don't remember if she got to took any or if it was only one roll because later in the show they showed the little rags hanging in the outhouse for each member of the family .

I make a point of going out every few days to keep me active. I could sit here for days if I did a huge shopping for a month or such. I don't. I have food an supplies that I could do very well with for at least 2 weeks probably more. Right now I have purchased enough TP to least well past that, only 2 rolls of paper towels for now. I have food to last and 3 jars of peanut butter. I have no family close by. My immediate neighbor does not drive nor have a car. I cannot ask her to pick up things for me, although she probably would, she walks everywhere! I'd rather not have to ask for someone to shop for me if I were confined to home. Delivery costs money and large orders are required.

When we were returning from a tour of Daufauskie Island near Hilton Head, there was a group just arriving on the island for a week's stay. The island doesn't have a grocery store. They had several packs of toilet paper and beer on top of their luggage. I guess there are some things you just can't live without.

I might buy a little bit extra. Maybe. I've already decided if something goes down, I can always use a washcloth to clean my rear. So I really need washing detergent (or even just vinegar/bleach). TP is a recent invention and not a diehard need. If shit goes down (see what I did there? lol), I'd seriously hunker down.

being a backpacking instructor.. I know that many distance hiking women use "pee rags" for urine.. the bandana used lives on the outside of the backpack, where the uv rays sterilize it and dry it.. I can think of ways to use little paper.I would be desperate to do this at my house...

I understand the need because of quarantine, but a case lasts us for a very long while and the people on the news had like 5-6 cases. To me that is over kill. Even the news told people today to quit hoarding and leave some for others and for areas like the medical end emergency staff, mask and sanitizers.

I think most of the TP is shipped into the states from other countries (China in particular) and shipments have been stopped because of the virus.

I wonder whether those people are buying for family/friends/neighbors though. I bought extra to keep on hand, but also because I wouldn't be surprised if DS, who has 2 roommates, stops by to snag some or if our parents who don't stock up might need some.

For people/families that have gastrointestinal issues, I can see where they might want to have more on hand than usual. My DH is on medication that makes him have to suddenly go, sometimes 2-3-4 times a day. I had my gallbladder out last year and I’m still trying to figure out which certain things give me similar issues. Plus I work from home so I’m here all day. I usually have a stockpile under normal circumstances.

I do think that it was smart of stores to finally start limiting how much people can buy. I also heard that ebay has banned the sale of certain products due to price gouging.

Things I should have done long ago are being tackled, including making sure we have plenty of assorted OTC meds on hand.

I was at Costco yesterday and there seemed to be plenty of stock on the shelves. There were signs posted limiting customers to 5 each of certain cleaning products, baby wipes, and rice.

It’s nuts. This isn’t like a hurricane or tornado, we will not be without places to purchase the things we need. With Amazon and Walmart, our needs can be met.
With all the food delivery services, we don’t even need food in our frig. A friend can pick up things from the store for you and leave it on your porch.
We need to be sensible and take precautions but not go off the rails.

And the prices could be much, much higher.

As far as delivery goes I prefer to have products in my home now before (or in case) it gets to where everyone that handles the items before they reach your door has a good chance of having been exposed. I would even be hesitant getting meals (pizza!) delivered when I don't know if the people making it are shedding the virus but not sick -YET.

I think that is nice but since we are hearing that people are testing positive when they are feeling fine with no temperature (yet) I am not sure it is any guarantee of safety

Talking of supplies running out...is a little levity permissible here? I don't know if it's well known to Americans that Boots is national pharmacy chain...

And the prices could be much, much higher. We do not have grocery delivery available for my neighborhood--not from Amazon, not from Kroger, not from Walmart, etc. So unless I want to rely on neighbors to pick stuff up for me, I am going to do without if I run out of something. I did buy TP at Sam's, and it may have looked ridiculous for me to be buying two packs of 45, but one was for my mom. I mentioned in another thread that I am just doing my annual "storm preparation" a few months early this year, so water, propane tanks for the grill, gas for the generator, etc. are being stocked now. I don't expect to need the propane or gas because of the virus, but with the increased severity of storms over the past several years, I don't want to be caught unprepared. So while I am looking at my emergency supplies necessary in case of a quarantine, I am also looking at what I need for an extended power outage in case of a storm.
