Hey Peas - I just bought the canon rebel t3i. It is a little overwhelming. Does anyone have a link to a great , quick teaching youtube or something? I would love little cheat cards that say how to set the camera for common events like sports, portraits, group shots, etc.

Best advice I can give is to read the manual, cover to cover.

Check out Pinterest. They have a ton of tutorials. I shoot with a Nikon, so I can't help much with the Canon. Best of luck!

I tried reading, I tried on-line tutorials, I tried just playing around...
The best thing for me was a class at our local camera shop. The basic class was 8 hours and the advanced class was 10 hours.

I just bought a new DSLR too. I got the Canon SL1. I spent a lot of time reading the manual and felt like I learned a lot from it. But when I get out in the "field" to take pictures, I forget what I read so I end up using auto more than I would like. Maybe I should look into a live class.
FWIW, I LOVE the camera and the pictures it takes. I just know it can do so much more than what I am doing with it currently.

Hey Peas - I just bought the canon rebel t3i. It is a little overwhelming. Does anyone have a link to a great , quick teaching youtube or something? I would love little cheat cards that say how to set the camera for common events like sports, portraits, group shots, etc. You have a cheat card right on the camera. It's the little running guy for sports, the head for portraits, the mountains for landscape, etc. If you feel the need for cheat cards, you aren't ready to worry about anything else. I think too often people who get DSLR cameras try to run before they can walk and they want shortcuts to the finish line. You want to learn your camera? Take pictures. Experiment. It's so so so easy with a digital camera. The settings info is embedded in the file. It makes it so easy to learn. BTW, there is also nothing shameful about letting the camera choose the settings for you, especially at first. As you go along you will learn what you like and what you need out of your camera. Then you can start making adjustments. I've been shooting with an SLR long enough that I had to learn with a notepad in my hand taking notes of settings so I could remember them when I got my film developed. 99% of the time I have my camera on Av (I consider this half-manual.) I started shooting with a full manual Konica and there is no way I will ever feel like shooting on M makes me somehow a better photographer. It just makes me slower. I can't tell you the number of wonderful photos I missed because I was having to mess with settings or focus instead of just taking the shot. Buy a good book. Take lots of pictures. have fun and don't stress and especially don't feel ashamed of using the settings the camera came with. Learn as you go. The more you do the more comfortable you will be with your camera. You don't have to be perfect out of the gate. Sorry, little pet peeve switch got switched. Don't mind me. Go about your business and enjoy your new camera.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Best ever photography book if you want to starting shooting out of AUTO mode. You can also buy camera specific books. Anything by David Busch is guaranteed to be a winner.
