Today’s card challenge is to stamp something on patterned paper, cut it out, and use it on a card/project. If you’re feeling fancy stamp on several pieces of patterned paper and paper piece the design. Jennifer McGuire did a video (inserted below) with lots of examples, and I think she suggested heat embossing clear over black ink, fussy cutting, and shading the finished piece with some grey marker (if I remember correctly) to give it more definition. My patterned paper was subtle enough I didn’t think the shading was needed but I might try it next time. This technique is really fun, especially if you don’t feel confident with coloring, and it is a great use of 6x6 papers. I want to try with a butterfly stamp next! And then a poinsettia. my examples: March projects by jo.blackford, on Flickr

Your cards are beautiful. I especially love the one paired with your MOM stamp. I will have to hunt around and see if I can find a stamp and a subtle print and try this challenge. Thanks for the challenge and for posting Jennifer's video.

Love your challenge, joblackford. Your cards are beautiful. Haven't done that for awhile, since I was dressing Julie Nutting's paper dolls a few years ago. I did it then b/c I am no good at colouring. Don't know why I haven't continued with other stamps to solve the same problem. I like the idea of layering flower petals, or paper piecing other images. Not sure I have the patience to do it, but I like the idea...

Lovely cards, and a great challenge. I’ve had this video in my queue, waiting to be watched for a couple of weeks. Seeing your challenge reminded me that it was still waiting. I finally watched it this morning while exercising. I was delighted to see there is another stamper like me who prefers fussy cutting to coloring! I’ve never liked coloring.
Now I want to get out my scraps and see if any lend themselves to this technique. Looks like I may need to get out my embossing powder and heat tool, too. So many fun things to try, so little time.....

Ooh, that’s beautiful nylene! Now I’m wondering if I have any stamps like that. Just lovely

Tried my hand at this over the weekend, and ended up tossing the results. I think I am trying to work with a bigger pattern than this calls for, I watched the video and I know she said to use smaller patterns, but then I had some 12x12 scraps I was trying to use up, did not work at all. The stamp was just lost. Additionally, I think you need larger stamps, I tend to have small stamps that have a lot of detail. I will try again though!

I think it will definitely take some trial and error. If you have any tone-on-tone scraps to start with, b-sides, and maybe some floral stamps, I’d say that might give you some success. Did you heat emboss as well? I think that helps a lot with getting a good defined line. Good luck trying again! It’s definitely fun when it works. Thanks for playing

nylene, your card is lovely. It looks like you heat embossed the flowers. I love how they really stand out as a result.
I realized while looking through papers that this is more challenging than it looks. I did make a card with one element stamped on patterned paper, but I didn’t heat emboss it. I do think that heat embossing would make a big difference.

And adding a little grey shading helped on my latest project - I added some grey around the outline edges since I wasn't able to cut right on the embossed edge, as well as a couple of other spots (mouth, belly, eyebrows) for a little more definition. Those are so cute, joblackford! I like the shading. I’m still playing around with shaker cards at the moment. Here is the card that I did for the challenge, but never posted. I’m not even sure if I finished it before the next challenge was posted, but I’ll add it here, anyway. The jar cover really lent itself to stamping on patterned paper, but I do wish I had heat embossed it. The dragonflies look like they weren’t stamped well. They were, but I added Wink of Stella to them, and the shine made it difficult to get a decent photo.

Ok, these are better! joblackford, you were right, embossing made all the difference. I stamped the whole cupcake on the blue, then stamped just the frosting on the polkadot paper. Then cut that out and stuck it on top. I did not want the cake to be blue, so I did color that.

They're really fun cards - I love the colors and the patterns you chose. I'm glad you tried it out again with the embossing and that it worked out so well.
