Hi folks!
I was active on the NSBR for years and have found my way back after a long hiatus! So glad this community was set up!
We're in the very beginning stages of building our next house. We go for our initial consultation in the showroom tomorrow but I'm having some difficulty with the kitchen cabinets. While I love the look of white cabinets, those are out of our price range. We've narrowed the finish down to either cherry or ebony. We have cherry now and, to me, represent the "safe" choice but I'm intrigued by the ebony finish. Is black/ebony trendy right now? In 10 years will we be looking at them saying, "Wow, just wow. What were we thinking?" It's fairly open concept with eight windows into the family/kitchen area but I'm worried the cabinets will make the room too dark.
Any thoughts, opinions, comments from Pea-ville? Or suggestions on how to convince DH to give up his man cave so I can get my white cabinets?
I'll try to post a picture, if I can figure out how to. (It took me over a year on the old board.)

I personally like the ebony look. Don't know about resale.

Okay, phew it showed up. Ignore the pendant lights pictured. We've already decided we'll be installing different ones that we've found.
And yes, we plan on this being our "forever" house, Lord willing and if the creek don't rise.

I love mine and couldn't care less about resale value. I like enjoying the house I'm living in and not worrying about what someone down the road might like or want. If YOU like them then go ahead and get them.

I love the look of Ebony! Go with it! You could always deface them some day.

I like the look of ebony, particular with a marble countertop (or something equally light).

I painted my cabinets black. I really like them. My counter tops are salt and pepper granite

I love the look of ebony cabinets. With the light and openness in the picture you posted, they look absolutely gorgeous.

Dumb question, but why are white cabinets more expensive?

Okay, phew it showed up. Ignore the pendant lights pictured. We've already decided we'll be installing different ones that we've found. And yes, we plan on this being our "forever" house, Lord willing and if the creek don't rise. It is your forever home. Build what you love. DH and I built our forever home 8 years ago. I couldn't care less what anyone else likes or doesn't like. I only care what DH and I like. It was the same with our last house and we knew that was not our forever home but we still did what we wanted because we were the ones living there. I was only concerned about resale when we started prepping our last home to sell. Funny thing is, with all the crazy things (to some people) that we did, the real estate agent loved the house. We did repaint one room. No regrets about anything we did to that house (sold quickly at full asking price) or the one we live in now. And last, but certainly not least, I love the photo you posted. I think the kitchen looks beautiful. I also love the pendant lights.

Is that what your kitchen will look like or just an example of the cabinets?

Dumb question, but why are white cabinets more expensive? I think it's because white is a more popular color so they can get away with charging more. Just my theory!

I'm not a fan but it shouldn't matter how long you'll live there or resale - get what you love. If you're remodeling and you want your dream kitchen and you love them - do it.

Is that what your kitchen will look like or just an example of the cabinets? That's a picture from the model of the floor plan we've chosen, with the exception of the fireplace on the far left. We're going with another window there instead (due to allergies).

Dumb question, but why are white cabinets more expensive? When you build, there are different levels of cabinetry. When we built our home last year, there was a white option in level 2, but it looked pretty cheap. The nicer white was a level 5 and was a big price jump.

FYI: black cabinets, much like black cars, show dirt a lot easier so keep that in mind.

Thanks for all of your input! We went with the ebony ones and picked a mostly white granite with dark flecks in it. Thanks again!

we are remodeling our kitchen and are either doing an ebony or painted gray color cabinets. We just installed our new quartzite countertops yesterday, they look like marble but have the durability of granite so... obviously I love the look! much more than white, congrats on your new build!

I just painted my white cabinets w/chalk paint & a dark wax...I HATED them white. No, they don't make the room look bigger, they made it look BORING. I LOVE the idea of ebony cabinets. I would have gone in that direction, but I have a very tiny galley kitchen. If I had a different layout, I would have JUMPED and ebony.
