We cancelled my sons don’t want to risk it but I’m almost thinking do it sound before shit really hits the fan if you can’t wait if stylist was ok with it. Ours so far isn’t worried about taking clients but no thanks. We’ll stay home.

FYI I just got an email from my stylist saying that Washington’s hair salons are now closed by state order.

My hair stylist owns her own shop. There’s never more than 3 of us in there at one time. I’m still going.
If she were a salon, nope.

My appointment was last friday. I went. My stylist is a sole proprietor and it was just he and I. Now when my next appointment comes up, I will reassess based on the conditions at that time.

I had mine done about three weeks ago and they’re good. My regular stylist just had a baby anyway and there is no way I’d risk bringing any nasty germs into her home salon. The root spray actually works pretty well for me. Work is the only place I plan on going for a while, and I wear a surgical bouffant there, so there is no point to it.
I am due to have my lash extensions filled though and that won’t be happening for a while. They were getting pretty sparse so I trimmed what was left down to the length of my natural lashes and they look so short now! But there are definitely bigger problems in the world.

I live in Michigan, tonight I got an e-mail from my hair salon (they have a couple of them in our area) that they are closing tomorrow until further notice because of the Coronavirus.

I have an appointment in two weeks for my color and haircut. I’m going to text her tomorrow to see if she can get me in Wednesday so I can get it done in case she’s closed by the salon owner or we’re put on lockdown.

What part of pandemic do you all not understand? I guess it doesn't apply to some people.
Go get groceries if you have to. Pick up necessary drugs for you mom or grandma.
But Jesus, you can get by without the vanity appointments like nails, hair, and massages.

DH and one kid both could use a trim. Both are waiting. I'll make sure their stylists get good tips when this is over. I'm in a growing it out stage so no need to see anyone for a while

This is why our Governor in PA shut down almost everything, including salons and spas.
I’m not sure the urgent need for a haircut, personally I’m not seeing anyone but people across the street in my neighborhood, I am even giving my hair a break and letting my hair air dry and pulling it into a ponytail.

PSA: For those of you just saying it’s just me and my hairdresser....it’s NOT. It’s you and your hairdresser and every other single person you hairdresser has come in contact with for last couple of weeks.

Honestly...I think some of the reasons people are going is that we know these shop owners are going to go under financially. Our local barber put measures in place on Monday.Way stricter than what was asked of many of us. Here in NYS they are all closed as of today at 8pm.

My salon closed a couple of days ago. Hopefully they reopen when they say, as I have an appointment 2 days from then.
But I guess I’ll make do if I need to. I’m one of her long standing regulars, so I’m sure I’ll be a priority client once the salon is open.

If you google “corona virus most dangerous jobs” a host of articles will pop up and barber/hair stylist are always high on the list after medical personnel, first responders, etc.
I’m not an expert, but I figure if my hairstylist is shedding the virus (perhaps she doesn’t realize she has it) there is a good chance she is going to pass it on to me when she is physically so close to me. It doesn’t matter how much bleach she has sprayed or how few people are in her salon, if she coughs near me, I might very well get the virus.
It’s just not worth the risk to me right now. Especially since I am planning to have my 94 year old aunt come live w/ us for awhile.

I am as vain as all get out, but even if our governor didn't order the closure of salons, I wouldn't be keeping my appointment next Tuesday that I made month ago. I will send her payment for that appointment, but then it's all YouTube haircutting videos for me.
In all honesty, the disruption of service that is bothering me the most is my biweekly housecleaner. I will continue to pay her as before, but I didn't want the risk for either of our families. I just had back surgery and will struggle for a while to keep up with things, and DH and DS are kind of useless in that department.

I will be gray and shaggy. But I do feel bad for my stylist and the others. I talked to her a couple of days ago (phone) and she sounds so stressed. She posted something on FB and I think she is really scared about the loss of income. Yet at the same time she has health issues so is cared of being infected. MI hasn't closed salons down but obviously many are cancelling.

No offense to you, but really that's what people say to make themselves feel better about still going to get their hair done. If someone was really worried about their stylist or shop owner going under they'd give them money instead of going for a haircut.
I mentioned upthread that my hairdresser chose to stop working for now and cancelled all her appointments. About a week later, the entire salon closed. While many are being very supportive she's getting texts from people asking 'OMG what am I going to do!??' They aren't worried about her and her four children, they just want their hair done no matter what.

I tipped mine the cost of my next appointment and she cried. I can’t imagine being a small business owner right now. I’m sitting here, employee of a local school, and the chances of me being unemployed or furloughed are slim to none. I’m doing my best for the people who aren’t as lucky.

I had an appointment the 31st of this month. My stylist is still working/needs to work. It is a big salon and not sure how crowded it is right now. I felt bad cancelling, but chances are it will be closed (hopefully!!) by then. I have contemplated possibly asking her for a "color pack" and a brush so that I can at least color my own hair ---- I will pay her the full fee of doing my hair and waxing.
ETA: she is 2 blocks from where I work (who knows if/when we will close unless mandatory) and she would drop it off and leave at my car while on her way home since she drives past every day. I would NOT go to the salon.

I am NOT saying it's right to go and I am did NOT go to my salon "just in case". Just trying to explain the thoughts that some may be having. And giving them $$$ is a MUCH better idea. I am very very worried for a dear friend who is in the nail/hair business. VERY. I could care less about my hair at this fucking point.

Our state is shutting down salons Monday at 8 pm.
Edited to add: Not just hair/nail salons, any close contact business.

I had an appointment today and I canceled. My state hasn't yet shut down nonessential businesses. My stylist, who works in her own room of a multi-stylist building, tried to subtly encourage me to keep the appointment, even while responding that she understands the reason for the cancellation.
I was initially annoyed with the little bit of pressure she tried, but I understand it. If I were her I'd be going out of my mind worrying about my finances. I paid her for the appointment and will likely do that for each one I choose to cancel in the next few months.
She's normally pretty pragmatic about things so I hope she doesn't continue trying to cajole other clients into coming in.

Yesterday,a co-worker contacted her stylist to see if she would have her appointment today. Stylist works in a very large salon with 20 chairs. Stylist said appointment was still on. Co-worke, who says she thinks this is all a hoax, nonetheless asked about distancing. Stylist said they are booking every chair twelve hours a dsy, as many as they can squeeze in to compensate for the inevitable closure. Once my co-worker thought about it, even she thought going to that appointment was a bad idea.

My hair grows so fast the gray roots would be over an inch if I miss my appointments for the next couple of months. Good thing no one’s going to see me except people at the grocery store, and they’ll all be busy trying to scavenge for food to notice

My niece is a hairdresser and she was desperate for the salon to shut as schools have closed and she has a daughter at school. The salon owner was trying to get them to work extra hours! Fortunately, it was announced yesterday, that our government has promised to pay 80% of everyone’s wages so now the owner has agreed to shut today.
