Since we've been home for the last 3 days, we haven't used any hand sanitizer since we can wash with soap and water. My cousin says they still use hand sanitizer all the time at home, even if they haven't gone out. If you are staying home, what is your usage of hand sanitizer looking like these days?

No, I think soap does a better job. I only use wipes or sanitizer if I can't get to a sink with warm soapy water.

We just use soap and water. Only use it after handling mail or any object at risk outside that others touched. Rule here, our college girls are not allowed to go anywhere for anything. No one leaves the 5th wheel except to walk the dogs and thankfully it is very wooded and spaces are pretty fare apart. Our younger kids are not even allowed to play at the parks.

Every time I see DH reaching for it I ask him WTF he’s thinking. It has its place when you’re out and about but, if you’re at home and think you need it, get up and wash your hands.

We don’t use it in the house. We have bottles in our cars and my purse.

Besides soap and water being more effective when done properly, soap is a lot easier to come by than hand sanitizer. So save it for when washing hands isn’t an option!

I have a bottle in my car, and I use that when I’ve been in a store or something. I also have some wipes in my car.
At home, I’ve got three bathrooms with sinks, the kitchen sink and the laundry room sink. Soap beside every one.

I don’t use it at home at all. It’s very drying and my hands are normally so chapped and raw anyway at this time of year. There are five six sinks, three showers and two tubs in this house and there is soap by every tap. It’s so much easier to just wash my hands. I have a bottle of sanitizer in my car and I need to find one of the small ones I have stashed away somewhere to put in my purse for when we’re out and about.

You're only supposed to use hand sanitizer if you can't use soap and water. Soap and water is the preferred method. Also, there generally isn't a shortage of soap and water.

We don't even have it in the house (other than the little bottles we keep in our purses). Even our unopened bottles are in the car.
Also, I keep forgetting to use it in the car. 😬

This is a timely thread for me! I left the bottle out on the counter that I use for refilling our travel bottles. This evening my husband used it and I yelled at him that the sink was literally one step away. I said I was going to hide it from him lol. I felt a little bad after I said that, but this s a precious commodity! 😁

DH works in a nursing home and uses it a lot during the day, as well as washes his hands, and they are in rough shape. So, in addition to knowing protocol, no fears he’ll reach for the alcohol based product when we have more gentle soap available. Silver lining! Finding moisturizing soap right now has become next to impossible. I had some in my Amazon cart last night and *poof* it was gone before I could check out.

We have a bottle by the front door. Everyone uses it when entering the house. Other than that, we use regular soap and water. But we are leaving the house less and less these days, so the hand sanitizer stands mostly unused.

I don't have any in the house. Before all this it wasn't something we used (except a small bottle in my car for emergencies) and now I can't get any, so no, we don't use it at home.

I never use it at home. I have three bottles of it that I picked up at Target weeks and weeks ago (when I should have bought 25 and given them to neighbors, but who knew...) -- Dh has one in his car and I have one in mine. But here at home I use Clorox wipes on everything, and I wash my hands. I don't really even wash my hands much more than I normally did because I'm not going anywhere. Although since I work in both an elementary school and a hospital maybe I'm more of a hand washer than other people who do not work in places like that...? -- Of course if I do go somewhere, like yesterday's quick trip to CVS, I wash my hands the second I'm in the house, then I Clorox wipe the doorknob, my house key, and the bathroom faucet, all things I touched before I washed my hands.

One more time for the people in the back: soap + water is more effective! Ration your hand sanitiser for when you don't have access to a sink and soap. It hasn't been available for civilians in the most affected countries in Europe for weeks now! It's precious stuff for when you leave your home and that is it.

We have very little hand sanitizer. My kids have in their school bags so we could use that if needed. If we go out we’re using Lysol wipes in the car as we were told that friction and wiping off is important. At home we only use soap and water.
As I’m making the food I’m washing before i touch any food item, plate, fork, etc. I’m making my girls wash before they do anything in the kitchen. If I catch them with their hands near their mouth or eyes i make them wash. We wash after we come in from a walk.
Remember the importance of moisturizer. The small cracks in our hands from washing so much put us more at risk. Dh has me moisturizer the girls’ hands daily.

Hand sanitizer is in the car, specifically for when we go to the grocery store (or if we were to get takeout). We have soap and water at home.

We do both. Wash and then use hand sanitizer. And sometimes I use hand sanitzer when I think I'm fine, but maybe not, like I just turned off a light switch we all use.

Agreed it’s for outside use. Also I didn’t know this, but a nurse friend of mine posted: Just a Nurse tip Re: handwashing...really hot water is not better. It opens your pours, dries out your skin leaving you more susceptible to infection.

I would rather use soap and water. It's more effective and easily available in the house. DH spends most of the day out in the shop, so I gave him a bottle of sanitizer to keep out there, as he doesn't have access to running water there.

I have to find ours we using when Jeeping or camping. I know I have a bottle or two someplace. We never use it at home.
