I have made two so far. I am using four layers of quilter cotton. A nurse friend is in need of some for work. I am making some of each style for her to try. Nice! I did see a pattern at some point with 4 layers of quilters cotton. Did you happen to try wearing one to see if it's easy to breathe through? Please keep us posted! I tried one on and it’s fine for breathing. My friend works in a nursing home, so I cured I would make several of varying thicknesses and styles for her to try. I have some nice knit to try, too.

Has anyone tried a little elastic at the top to gather across the bridge of the nose?

Thank you SO much for sharing that, Patter!! Thank you for modeling too. I’m doing some elastic and some twill. I started cutting a bunch, going to start assembling soon. Slow progress with two small children, but I put my 3 year old to work stacking and counting the rectangles lol. EDIT: I just got a newsletter from Joann’s. Looks like they will be reaching out to hospitals and plan to set up mask donation drop offs at their stores. www.joann.com/make-to-give-response/

Is anyone using flannel as backing fabric. A nurse on Nextdoor has asked people to make masks for our local hospital. She has suggested cotton for outer layer and flannel for backing. It seems too heavy to me, especially with the pleating.

Thank you, Patter!! i will order some twill and start cutting rectangles in the meantime. I would love to send them to anyone who needs them. PM me with your address and how many you’d like and I’ll let you know when I’ve got some finished.

Coffee Mom , karinec, and J u l e e , you are welcome! Let me know how it goes. I have done both the elastic and the twill, and for fit, the twill is better IMO. Since our church is doing so many already for local hospitals and doctors offices, I am making them for people that need them specifically. And sorry if the link went to 1" twill. It should be 1/2" twill. I will try to look and fix. muggins , I too believe the flannel would be hot! I have worn one around the house with the two layers of 100% cotton, and it's an easy wear. Easy to breathe, doesn't seem to get hot, etc. And here's the twill. I couldn't find it before but it's there now. 1/2" Cotton Twill

Thank you guys!!! I just want to reiterate that I wear both kinds of masks, tie and loop, depending on where I’m working (I work at two facilities). In my personal opinion, and after decades of being a surgical mask-wearer, the tie kind is more comfortable and adjustable. Any healthcare worker who has been wearing them long enough can get one on and off and on again without having to touch the mask portion if the outside is considered contaminated. But the loop-behind-the-ears kind are absolutely valuable too and I know healthcare providers will grateful for anything you can give them. I haven’t worn one with a flannel lining (I haven’t worn a fabric mask in thirty years actually, since my initial training) but I can also imagine they’d get pretty hot. Two layers of woven cotton does sound more comfortable.

Also, Patter, I never knew ravel and unravel meant the same thing. I looked it up. An auto-antonym. I feel smarter today.

Here’s one with double fold bias tape on the top and bottom, with strings left 15” on each side for tying. It takes longer but feels like it would be more secure against the face.

My daughter in med school said the same thing--the ties are SO much better. They fit better and are more comfortable. I made one using 100% cotton twill. It's wonderful, and it makes the mask fit so much better too. This was my test so it's a bit sloppy. Now I have my prototype ready to go. I will not be making any with elastic--only with cotton twill.[/quote I completely disagree!!! As someone who goes in to a room, and has to put on/take off a mask every single time, the ties are a PITA, vs just put it on with elastic. I don't need comfort. I need ease. I'm also not getting how to reuse these. We would have to throw the fabric made covers in the laundry after each room. We could reuse the one underneath, but the top layer would have to be washed/sterilized each time. Which would save on throwing away masks, but not laundry I'm going to completly disagree! I have to take off and put on a new mask every time I go in and out of a room. It's a PITA to tie a mask 100xs a day.

cindyupnorth , I am not making these for hospitals. I am not making these for doctor's offices. My church is doing that and using elastic. However, I am making these for people that need/want them. They want comfort. They want one that fits better. That's what I want too having a petite face. My daughter loves the tie ones because they fit her better. The doctors have already told her she will need a pediatric laryngoscope, etc., because she is so small. Her hands can't hold an adult one properly. I am giving away what I make to those in need. If a doctor's office wants them, I will make them. I also just saw a post elsewhere that elastic is now hard to find so people are donating ribbon to make them. I have NO idea how these are being used in hospitals and doctor's offices. I just know I am doing the best I can to help, and if I can share my pattern for others to use and make them, then great. Thank you for helping patients each day, and stay safe.

Health care workers are being asked to reuse their N95 masks because there aren’t enough. This layered cover can help by protecting the N95 mask and be removed, washed, and reused. Not a perfect solution, but necessary when a shortage of supplies will put health care workers at greater risk. I guess people are contacting places/people who need them and asking which kind they prefer.

So it sounds like both work, but for different uses and different preferences. I have both elastic and twill tape coming and will make both. I pulled several yards of fabric today in solids, kid prints, floral prints, manly prints, etc. hopefully it’s a little something for every.

Patter, what is the measurement of your finished short side (after you’ve sewn in the tucks)? Just want to make sure mine aren’t too big or too small.

My sister has medical businesses in Indiana, and is desperate for masks if you are still needing someplace to send them.

Just texted my sister who is a nurse anesthetist at UCSF to get her input. I would love to do this if it helps! Can you check if UCSF would want these if we were to make them? She said, they don't need them yet. They closed Mt. Zion so I think they absorbed their supplies. I will keep you posted.

Ok, I made my first 6x9 and gave it to a family RN to try. She said it’s a little small but doable, but wouldn’t fit over a n95 very well (if being used as a cover). But it will work for some people/uses. It’s too small for my husband. I’m going to finish this “batch” of 6x9s and work on a larger size. Maybe an inch in height and length?

Yes, I have seen people making them larger. This particular size is huge on our family. I think it's great to have lots of sizes. Glad she was able to try it for you. And a far as size after tucks, 2 3/4" J u l e e .

Key word is yet. I suspect all of us who start sewing now with no intended recipient will have no problem finding homes for them! Soon!

That was one of my concerns that if some wants to use these over n95 masks, the rectangular shape might not work. This link provides a pattern that might work better, as well as lists the best materials to use:
This is a youtube video with a tutorial on how to make it based on the pattern and what seam allowances she used:

I'm still exhausted from our marathon drive to pick up DS yesterday and move him home, but once my thoughts are more coherent, I'll figure out which materials to order to make the masks.

I also think they can go to places lower on the totem pole -- nursing homes, etc.
