Is anyone using flannel as backing fabric. A nurse on Nextdoor has asked people to make masks for our local hospital. She has suggested cotton for outer layer and flannel for backing. It seems too heavy to me, especially with the pleating. I am - because that's what my sister asked for. I figure she's the one requesting them, I'm going to follow her directions

If you all are looking for a place to send masks I'd like to suggest the company I work for. We do in home support services for developmentally and intellectually disabled adults. A large number of them require 24/7 support. We have upwards of 500 employees who provide services. So far I've made about 50. If you would be able to help please message me.

Oh no! Michaels just canceled my elastic order. Looks like all the rest I make will have the ties, which I *think* shipped already. I need to check. At least this elastic shortage could be a good thing, means tons of people are hopeful trying to help!
ETA Seasidemermaid, thank you for the links!

I think that would work better than regular ribbon as it is not smooth. Or - I made a couple with ties I made from fabric.

A friend ordered some elastic today for me and yesterday morning I ordered twill ribbon. It’s a good thing because I cannot find any online.
It seems lots of sewists have stepped up to make masks, since supplies are hard to find. Such a great movement! I have a list of medical personnel waiting on masks and I’ve already sent out ten.

I experimented with two different designs today as I await elastic. Here is the photo I posted on Instagram. 2 mask designsI like the more fitted one best, both the fit and sewing it. It was originally designed to have ties but I used elastic for easy on and off. The pattern is found linked to this video: Mask videoCan't remember if this was posted here before or not. It originated with a doctor in Antwerp

I am hoping to make a lot of mask sewing kits for my local friends who have machines and thread but no fabric or elastic, as I'm expecting my 288 yard "spool" from Overstock on Wednesday. I am REALLY hoping to find a pattern using rectangular cuts of fabric so I can quickly cut a whole lot of them. Am I understanding you like the method of sewing the other mask better? It does look like it would fit better? My wrists are not the strongest and I dread cutting a lot of those by hand!

This is what our club is making: Here is the pattern we are using for face masks. We tried several different ones and this one seems the most versatile, you don’t need elastic which seems to be sold out everywhere and with the ties it will fit any size head.. You can use bias tape if you have it or make your own binding. If you have width of fabric then you don’t have to piece together the binding.. When you print it out be sure to check the measurements to make sure it is to scale. I had to save it as a PDF and print it at 100%. Here is the link and attached is the PDF file. www.instructables.com/id/AB-Mask-for-a-Nurse-by-a-Nurse/?fbclid=IwAR1S1OBWrCv4PR4PCJb4vWPhT1EF_d_a12xAAN0n9cuv4wwkH9DaXa9oh3QI have some flannel on hand so I am putting flannel in the middle layer.

I commend and thank you all of you who are trying to sew masks to help with the shortage. I just wanted to post an article about people making them in my area for Dartmouth Hitchcock. Thanks again to all of you trying to help fulfill the desperate need for masks. A thousand 👍 ! Volunteers making cloth masks

Yes, I like the fitted one much better because of the fit and because you don't have to do the pleats. I'd rather fussy cut than fiddle with the pleats. Part of the issue with the rectangular pleated one was the ties. I only had 3/4 inch twill which is really a bit wide. I wanted to try it since i have quite a bit. It left me with only room for 2 pleats. Regardless, I don't see how the 6" wide cut on the rectangular one gives enough coverage. I'm going to try librarylady version next but right now off to the grocery store which promises to be an all morning adventure of the 3 places we have to buy food in our county.

My husband found a 244 yard spool of elastic on overstock. $60 with expedited shipping. We ordered one to send to my sister. I’m cutting and she is sewing.

The 6" cut mask gives a ton of coverage. In fact, it's too big for me but I have a petite face. My bestie in OH made a bunch. She sent me a photo of herself in one, and it also was too big for her. The fussy cut mask is a terrible fit for some. There really is not a "one size fits all" when sewing these. I think anything done will be appreciated.

I think I'm going to try starting with a 10.5x7.5 rectangle and see what that looks like. good luck with your shopping. Hope you can maintain social distancing. (((HUGS)))

And I'm thinking of the assorted sizes/shapes of humans. I agree, an assortment of sizes is needed.

Ok, I made my first 6x9 and gave it to a family RN to try. She said it’s a little small but doable, but wouldn’t fit over a n95 very well (if being used as a cover). But it will work for some people/uses. It’s too small for my husband. I’m going to finish this “batch” of 6x9s and work on a larger size. Maybe an inch in height and length? Yes, I have seen people making them larger. This particular size is huge on our family. I think it's great to have lots of sizes. Glad she was able to try it for you. And a far as size after tucks, 2 3/4" J u l e e . Thank you!

I ran out of my 1/4 inch flat elastic, so now I’m breaking into my corded stash since the twill won’t be here until tomorrow. The elastic cord I have is pretty thin and I have NO idea what size it is. It’s a little more challenging making sure that it is secure (I knotted the ends for good measure) BUT the cord is much more comfortable!

I saw one medical center had requested it, I don’t remember which one. I’m more worried about it losing it’s elasticity quicker.. though I really hope they won’t be needed for too long

Refunded the exp. shipping. Told me I'd hear from someone within 1-2 days. I got an email last night saying that if I don't get it within 30 days they will cancel the order and refund the $. It seems that systems are overwhelmed and when items show "in stock" at time of ordering... that's not the case. I do have two 70 yard spools ordered from Amazon. Initially they said earliest shipping date would be April 9 but they've moved it out. Supposedly being delivered before 8 pm tomorrow.

Making new masks......... Also gowns and some will be pinstripes! Ummm... the elastic is in the wrong place in this mask. The elastic loops need to go on the sides to hook around the ears - not at the top and bottom. I don’t think anyone could wear that sample. Hopefully the actual masks being made solve that.

I’ve seen patterns with the elastic looped at the top and the bottom as well. It would be positioned in the location the ties would end up, I guess.

Ummm... the elastic is in the wrong place in this mask. They have a photo that shows how it's designed to be worn: Okay... those are going to be pretty hard to get on and take off with trying to get the neck loop over one’s head. Especially if one has one’s hair in a pony or a bun. I have a very big head and I’m not sure that an elastic loop big enough to fit over my head would do much for holding a mask snug around my neck. But, if that is what medical professionals have asked for, good for Fanatics for stepping up.
