Michaels. Kohls. Joann’s.
All still open.
They sell NOTHING that’s essential. But refuse to close. Adjusting hours and “making sure” employees are healthy.
Kohls was packed on my way to CVS today to get my prescriptions. I’m so disgusted by the company and the people in my city, which has three confirmed cases, two from community spread! We also have a “10 person or less rule” in non-essential locations but I guess they’re getting away with it?
Not happy and not likely to support their millionaire CEOs in the future.

They care more about the money than people. I am sure many of their employees need their checks, BUT other employers are closed and covering their employees. They could do the same. Because they don't care enough about people and the community, they will eventually lose more customers due to being inhumane or due to virus related deaths!

I drove by my Kohl’s yesterday afternoon and there were about a dozen cars in the parking lot. I generally avoid that place on a good day, though.

I agree. I have been out of work all week because it was reported that our mall was closed (I work at the Panera there). Well, it turns out that wasn't the case. My bf went yesterday just to check on things (he works at the one across the street) and said the only two places in the food court was Panera and Subway! Rumor has that the mall is finally officially closed but it sure took long enough! Frustrating! Yes, food places are allowed to be open for take out (which everything at the mall Panera is) but the mall should've been closed Monday.
At the moment, Panera continues to employ general managers and some assistant managers for cleaning closed locations. Hourly employees are just told to apply for Unemployment. Not happy about that but it is what it is. Just glad my bf is working at the moment.

They are probably doing it for the money, but maybe their employees are like my friend and asking them not to close down.
My friend works for Ace hardware at the checkout stand. They are still open. I asked her about it and she said she is terrified that they will close down for a long period of time and she cannot afford to be out of work for too long. She said that the people are not coming into her store in groups and everyone seems to be trying to stand far apart when they get to her register. She is using sanitizer between every customer and is showering and putting her clothing through the wash as soon as she gets home. She did admit that she is afraid of the virus, but she is also afraid of being evicted for nonpayment of rent, car payment, etc.
I can’t speak for the stores themselves, but here is just one employee is depending on them staying open so she can pay her rent.

My son is still scheduled to work at JoAnn tomorrow and Saturday. I’m really apprehensive about that. I may tell him I’m not feeling well and he needs to stay home, though I’m afraid karma will bite me back and I will get sick. They need to just shut down.

I'm not shaming anyone at this point. I think everyone is doing the best they can and this is something that has never ever happened in our lifetimes. I am sick and tired of all the blaming from this to politics, to the dang parents at school who can seem to wrap their heads around this and are freaking out, instead of just taking a step back, breathe and listen to common sense.
Yes these store should close. I feel for the employees. I am sure most or half are paycheck to paycheck. They don't want to be there either, but if they can't pay their bills.. then they are still making money to do so.
I will avoid public places and if everyone does the same they will eventually close. Maybe people won't change.. I don't know.. All I know is that I am sick and tired of everyone being mad and angry and this, that and the other. DON'T go there is my answer.. if those idiots want to expose themselves they will deal with the consequences.. I just pray they stay away from the sick and elderly.

I'm trying to focus on the companies who are doing right by the employees by closing and keeping them paid with benefits along with the ones who are helping out our community. They will be getting full support from me when they reopen!!
We have some larger companies that are "adopting" some of our small local businesses to help them through this. Another one is changing their whiskey distillery over to making hand sanitizer and they are doing it all for no charge. Other local businesses jumped right in to help with equipment, cleaning and packaging. They posted this morning they are giving away the first batch to high risk facilities like nursing homes, first responders, and clinics.
I want to think that the MAJORITY of companies are doing the right thing for their employees and local communities!

Well I am glad the feed store was open today. The birds need to fed and I like the feed from this store. Plus they load it for me. The other stores don’t.
Stores are not only open but hiring. Fred Meyers, Safeway, winco are begging for help.

Kohl's is closing at 7 pm tonight and not reopening before April 1. Apparently they just announced this. Michaels? Joann’s? While it’s nice to not shame businesses, we have documented community spread in my county. When you have nonessential places still open, the spread will continue. Everyone needs to do their part, and if people are continuing to shop for non essentials in your store, close your stores and help the community out. It’s not going to get better until everyone does their part! Our small businesses are taking a huge hit but Michaels and Joann’s are still open? Not okay to me.

I'm simply avoiding these and any other store that is not a grocery store for now. Some things I can order online. Other stuff can wait.
Retail won't close as long as people are showing up.

Our Kohl's is closed because it's in the mall and the mall closed. Joann's is doing curb side pick up.

Same thing here. Lots of businesses in my neighborhood are still open. Workers need the wages. I suppose they'll continue to do so until our governor declares a total lockdown, which is highly unlikely at the moment. Until such a time, people need to pay their bills.

I am not shaming any company at this point because there are two sides to why they should or should not be open. I agree that non-essentials do not need to be open but on that plus side is that some employees need to, want to still work, as sad as that is. I cannot say how much they may be contributing to the spread when I see packed lots at the grocery stores. My daughter runs a grocery store and she has no choice. The Joann, Michaels and Hobby Lobby lots are far from full when I have seen them by the grocery stores, no where near their normal. I do think that their days may be numbered and I also hope that when they finally close that they do the right thing by the employees and pay them. Game Stop stores are still open as are Best Buy stores because apparently they are needed for electronics or so they say.
How does one decide who has the right, morally or not? There are still so many places open besides stores. Clearly hair salons, nail salons and so the list goes remain open and are these places really necessary? Nope but if one is comfortable getting their hair done and the place is open, so be it. Do we really need fast food restaurants open? Is the contact at the window not compromising? This is nothing we have ever seen before so it is all new paths that are being forged. Nope, no judgment from me...

A friend just sent me an announcement that Joanns is moving to pickup/carryout orders only. I think that would be a good compromise. Their employee still work but it lowers the risk of having customers in the store, similar to restaurants. I imagine craft type stores are doing big business right now too as everyone is home and want things to do. If you can stop and pick up food from a restaurant, why not stop and pick up craft supplies to keep busy as well? I say this and then will admit that I proactively stocked up on my art supplies instead of toilet paper ETA*** I went to look at the full announcement and it isn't ONLY pickup/carryout. They are strongly encouraging those options and have limited store hours. In some cities/states they have closed stores. Sounds like it might be up to the local management to decide or its only the areas that are closed down by the government.

All salons are closed in Washington state, impacting a lot of small business owners, but the stores like JoAnn and Michaels are still open. I don’t know what the right answer is. I just hope we don’t come to regret shutting everything down sooner. What’s going on in Italy is terrifying.
ETA: if JoAnn just goes to curb-side delivery that would be better. My son works as a cashier and it’s those face-to-face transactions that make me the most nervous.

I’m surprised to hear that salons are still open here. I thought it was essential only at this point in California. Yeah getting a spray tan is life threatening. Same with craft stores and clothing stores or makeup. Not sure if our mall is still open. I know they changed the hours. Farmers markets are still open. Those are usually really crowded and packed with people much more so than grocery stores. I haven’t been lately so maybe they aren’t so bad. One of them is in a large parking lot and could spread out but not our main one unless they are limiting it to only food venders maybe it wouldn’t be bad
I can see some drive through or hardware stores as people will need to repair things.
I got a free code for redbox today but that would mean going into a store.
I’m surprised that so many are allowed to remain open at this point.

Did you see Denver just shut down hair salons, nail salons and tattoo parlors until the end of next month? I want to say there is one more place but the brain just blinked off so.... I do feel for those people as they rely on their customer base not an hourly based paycheck for their living. I don’t see them receiving wages without actually needing to earn them. This is a sad and scary time financially.

I was in Home Depot/Lowes a couple of days ago and the parking lot was pretty full mid-afternoon.
Maybe contractors wanted items to finish up a project before things get worse?
But I was getting paint; there were two ladies also deciding on crafty paint project and another family getting it. We're painting a room (cut in on the primer today-yay!) so maybe others that are stuck at home are also working on projects they have been meaning to do for awhile.
They have cut back their closing hours but that's probably just because there's no evening business for them.

Ours are closed! The PA governor ordered the closing of all non-essential businesses earlier this week. At around 5pm, he ordered all non life sustaining businesses to shut down by 8pm tonight.
