The last time the government sent people checks, it was actually an advance on the next tax refund. They are not saying that this time.
This feels like an election ploy. In November, it’s “Trump gave my money.” In January, it’s “Hey, he tricked me.”
Does anyone know details about this time?

It sounds like it is for people who make $75,000 or less (with a small amount to those under $99,000). My opinion is that there a lot of people who make more than that level that are going to be hurting a lot. How is that even a help for people who own a small business or live in high cost of living areas. That is far below the *we don't need to send this to millionaires* range.

I truly think it will be too little, and probably too late, for a lot of people. I’m just hoping people don’t get kicked out of their homes - the banks have to work with everyone right now.
I also believe there are going to be so many small businesses that won’t be able to recover.

Here in the Metro DC area, $1000 is 1/2-1/4 of a monthly mortgage payment. I’m not sure it will help all that much.

I think that they should take a look from the top down, as in help employers keep the people employed IF they can and only if it is safe. Give the benefits to the small businesses to keep the flow of a regular paycheck to the employee, this way, MOST people are covered. A lot of businesses here (food related, gardening, gifts) have all gotten very creative in keeping open...restaurants are now doing curbside pick up and delivery who never delivered before, garden centers trying to keep normalcy by offering to do call in shopping, online ordering, and they will load your car or deliver. At least they are trying to stay buoyant during this uncharted time. (and still keeping the safe distances)
There are so many down sides to every type of plan that the government can issue. GAAAAHHHH.....
And it looks like there is going to be a big bail out (again) of large companies (hotels, airlines, casinos) where there are no restrictions on the bail outs---the owners don't have to pass the bail out funds down to the employees, they can instead use it for corporate executive bonuses and stock buy backs. GRRRRR>>>>

No plan is going to be enough or help everyone that needs it. I agree, the banks are going to need to work with people.
For instance, according to this plan, dd1 would get the money as she was making less than $75,000 that tax return year. Now she has a great software development job and able to telework. Her income isn’t being affected but she will receive the assistance. On the other hand, dh and I wouldn’t get the money but due to his self employment and not being able to work as much or at all due to lockdowns/limitations, we would need it but won’t get it.

We are in the same situation. It is only through a lot of work that we made/make above that amount, but we are providing support to help 1 of our kids that is outside of the house and then have our kids at home. There is no way that we are able to make what we did last year right now so we need the assistance now, not last year. I am sure if you are a 20 something just starting $75000 sounds like a lot but if you are established in a career and raising a family and own a home, $75000 isn't a large salary especially when it comes from multiple income sources that are being affected.

Here in Mass it definitely won't cover rent on a 2 bedroom duplex. I sort of see the logic though. A person making $75000 likely is paying about that much for a month, give or take. And people that make much much less than $75000 are more likely to have jobs where they are insecure, and need the help for longer (therefore living arrangements that aren't quite so high.) Kinda makes sense in my head lol

Agreed.. but this has always been the nature of the beast. When applying for student aid, my 20 year old daughter had to claim my income. It isn't her income, it's mine. Also, that particular year, I was making wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy less than I was the year prior, but they based it off my year prior earnings. I absolutely agree paget... it's just impossible to be enough or target just the right people.
