I just went out shopping at Aldi and our local grocery chain for the first time in a 10 days. They were pretty well stocked, and I found most of what I needed except flour. Still, it was jarring to see that shelves were so sparse. Made me tear up a little.

Sadly, I think it is harder and harder to get delivery. It's really challenging for the people that really need the delivery, like my mom who just finished chemo. Maybe those of us who can go, get in and out quickly, would help those who are absolutely in need like your mother. Try to call ahead or something to verify the stores policies as at my local store that is not always possible since some items are limited to 1 no exceptions. So I could not pick up milk & chicken for myself & my elderly neighbor. I did end up getting it, I gave her mine and had my DS pick up a few things for me. Kind of negating the less people in the stores thing.

It’s just really getting to me today—how drastically our lives have changed.

We got our grocery delivery and I was surprised at what all we did get. Most of the produce and random pantry goods were available or substituted with acceptable alternatives. The only thing we didn't get much of was meat (of any kind), dairy, cheese, and bread.
It looks like DH may have to pick up prescriptions at Kroger at the end of next week anyway, getting the mail delivery setup going is taking a long time due to high demand. So, he can pick up some things then. He will just have to be super careful about it.

They are the wipes they provide at the store to wipe the carts, just thin Lysol type wipes. I grab 4 and don’t touch anything at the store, I use them to wipe the touch screen and pin pad too. Antique France, man. No wipes here. You fancy. We're all like: "Bidet or die!" Really? But do you guys use carts a lot? I picture you in your berets and striped shirts (cigarettes optional) carrying a flat basket with a handle draped on your free arm stocking up on croissants, baguettes, escargot, and cheese and going about your way. Carts seem so provincial and not at all French! 😂😂😂 Our stores always have wipes, for at least the past 5-10 years I think, but people are generally pretty lax about using them. They are being used now though. PS I know not all French people wear berets and stripes or smoke or live on cheese and bread, I hope you know I was teasing g!

We have been going in person. We just don't shop as often as normal. I added to my pantry and freezer in early March and I replenish those items used plus what I need special for the week in one trip if possible.
One store I went to this week had almost no meat of any kind and the frozen foods were decimated. They were my last of 3 stops so I was only looking for a couple of things. I asked when they would replenish the meat section. The clerk checked and told me they were getting a perishable truck on Tuesday. I need my regular prescription filled so after the pharmacy* on Tuesday just after lunch I swung by that grocery store and sure enough, they had restocked and I got one item plus a decent substitute for the other.
If you feel comfortable doing so, go in person and ask when they are expecting to restock. I have the opportunity to go at any time of day so I went early on a Monday morning and mid-day trips avoiding the stores on the weekend when they are the busiest.
*BTW If you are looking for hand sanitizer, check your local compounding pharmacy. My pharmacy had a sign up that they were selling hand sanitizer they made.

It’s been 2 weeks since Belgium went on lockdown and about 3 weeks since I’d been to a grocery store, as I stocked up when Italy went on lockdown. Brussels airport is closing and I’m concerned that that could impact the supply chain, especially with commissary Items coming from the States. So I went to the commissary today. It was well stocked. I was amazed, as the place was WIPED OUT 2 weeks ago. There were a few things that were out of stock, but the store was surprisingly well stocked—maybe even better than on a usual day. The American vendor chicken was wiped out, but there was plenty of other meat. I bought a package of chicken from the Netherlands, so I felt very continental. ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/tongue.jpg.gif) There was a lot of locally supplied milk, but the almond, soy, and oat milks were empty. I bought a bottle of Fairlife milk for DH so that he could still have milk in a week or two. I’m don’t plan to go again for a month or so. I’m pretty sure I have enough to get us through. It took me two hours and a heaping cart, but it’s done. It reminded me of the days when both kids lived at home and always had a friend (or six!) over. So give it a week or two and I’m guessing the stores will be stocked again.

I understand your worry. Not about food being scarce but whether to go in person. I’ve never done curbside pick up. I went on Monday early and found everything I needed but, yes, meats were scarce. Standard fresh meats were scarce - ground beef, chicken - but there was lamb, ham, seafood, and lots of frozen options - turkey, meatballs.
There were few people in the store and most were wearing gloves and one guy had a produce bags on each hand. I did not wear gloves but took wipes with me and wiped the cart, then my hands throughout the trip. I unpacked into the garage and wiped off all the cans/bags and sprayed my bags with Lysol before putting away.
Time consuming but mind restful.

I would go in person if you can. The thing to remember is that they're just going to fulfill exactly what you have (perhaps a slight variation on size or brand) but in reality if you got there and they were out of spaghetti you would probably just buy linguine instead....they're not going to make that change on the fly, they'll just say they're out of spaghetti. I've given up on pick up right now, figure I can brave the store every 7-10 days and hope for the best (yes, we have more than 10 days worth of food but as long as we're healthy we don't want to dip too deep into our reserves b/c what if at some point we aren't healthy and need those reserves). My experience with Fred Meyer (Kroger) and Insta Cart is that they will ask if you want to make a change like that. Yes- don't panic. That is what's happening here in Upstate SC and Publix can't keep items stocked. And in my town of less 30,000, we only have 3 positive cases. Yes- I know that will increase. I'm an Instacart shopper and do my very best to substitute anything remotely near what you've ordered. I keep in constant communication with my customers- texting and sending pics of what's available. The only way I refund is if there's absolutely nothing that will work. For example, there's ZERO sugar or chicken or hamburger meat available. I'm not sure where you're located, but I think you just need to go to the grocery if you don't feel safe ordering. I can tell you that all of the carts are wiped. I sanitize my hands before I go into the store, if it's my first batch because I've just washed them if I leave from home. If I don't go home between batches, I go to restroom and wash my hands. My phone is clean when I go in and I wipe it down as soon as I get in the car every time. I clean my steering wheel and gear shift and sanitize my hands again. I am trying to be careful.

Here in Detroit, my dd (ICU RN in the covid unit) says to under no circumstances go to the store. She has picked up some groceries for us and I have used curbside service for the rest. My dh and I both have diabetes. Her hospital downtown is huge and they and the hospital in my community are having to send covid patients to other hospitals. This shit is real. Be careful, it’s not worth the risk unless you absolutely have no other choice than to go to the store.

( to add a little levity during these stressful times.......) Maybe sanctimommy will check in and let us know how she's handling all of this. Surely she's the best. homeschool. mom. ever. And, no doubt she has the perfect garden, has grown her own trees and/or hemp to make toilet paper, made plenty of homemade kombucha, annnd, wasn't she also a proponent of breastfeeding her "littles" until age 5 at least? ![](https://i.imgur.com/egiGYvE.jpg?1)
