I'm an 8th grade teacher. If school stays closed, we won't have a graduation. I need some ideas to do a "graduation" for our students. There are no more than 56 kids so it can be personalized. Anyone?

I suppose you could plan it for late summer, right before they return to school. I can imagine they are disappointed.

I've asked out principal for the people who normally ready the names to read the names with pauses and have the students/parents either send in video or pictures of the student to show as the names are read

I fear the same fate for our seniors (including ds). I did see on FB today someone suggested doing it at a drive-in theater.....every family in their own car and play a video or photos for each student on the screen. Far from ideal but better than nothing I guess.

How about making a graduation video and perhaps solicit baby and current photos to do a montage that can be watched/downloaded by the graduate. You can also randomly assign students to say something nice about each graduate and include that in your video.

Could you make a slideshow, sending out a link to all the kids' & parents' emails?
You could include highlights from the year they had, photos of any trips or concerts.
You could email them/their parents for photos if you need more or want to include sports team pics, gymnastics, cheer, etc.
You could write a small something about each kid.
"Jane made our class proud with her enthusiasm during science labs."
"Matthew made our class proud with his understanding and kindness to everyone."
You could make a digital graduation frame (class of 2020 "School Name") with a photo of them in it individually or as a class.

I don't understand why we can't move graduations, proms, etc. to July. All of the rules of the world have changed, there is no reason that graduations have to be in May because that is the way we've always done it.

All of the rules of the world have changed, there is no reason that graduations have to be in May because that is the way we've always done it. 100% this!!! The schools (specifically collages) that have already just canceled them did so too soon, IMO. My DS is a HS Senior. Our ceremony is currently scheduled for the end of May. We are still doing digital learning. They have not called school off for the year nor have they said we won't be going back. They are taking it a little at a time. Right now we are closed thru 4/24. That's far enough away to make another decision. If we get to the first part of May and things aren't looking any better, move it. If we get there and it's looking somewhat better but not significant, maybe make it the graduate and immediate family only (parents and siblings). Ours is done on our football field. So it could work.
These kids want and deserve to walk. If we have to do it in June or July, so be it. Just don't take it away from them.

My oldest daughter is a senior and she is heart broken about the idea of missing senior prom, the high school musical, and graduation. Her drama teacher has pretty much said the musical just won't happen. I really hope things can be rescheduled.

I just don't understand why everyone is in a rush to make decisions in March for things that aren't even scheduled until late May/early June....like the rush to close schools for the rest of the year, cancel graduation, etc. Things are changing daily, hourly even....let's just sit tight for a month and then see where we are. I get wanting to plan things in advance but why so far in advance.

We will still have a graduation for our Grade 12s. Our original date was the end of June but we can move it as required. My principal said no matter what we WILL be honoring our grads. We just don't know when. As a mom of a grade 12 student this makes me happy, especially since my dd is one of the top 2 contenders for valedictorian.

I teach 6th grade and once had a trainer tell us during PD that we are all in the diploma business. High school graduation is the culmination of 13 years of work in the district.
I know they are not canceling graduation in my district. It may not be in May, but it will happen.
Now Prom is another story. They did have to cancel prom because if they haven’t the kids couldn’t have gotten their money back. Rescheduling isn’t a viable option because there are too many parts that would have to be rescheduled. I predict there will be a lot of parents that pitch in and throw some fancy parties for the kids.

A video featuring 1 or more seconds of each graduate ‘graduating’ Submitted and then put together into a ‘graduation’ virtually
I mean exactly what you’d get anyway if the were all there and ‘walked’ the stage anyway, but you have the ability to make each child’s segment more personal in the video.
Yes, it’s not the same, but in someways it can be better, more personal

I think it’s realistic to say graduations at the start of and mid June will need to be rescheduled. I guess it depends upon the regulations where you live but if we currently can’t have groups of 10+ together and we are projected to be in for 1 more month, I’d say we might be out of our homes by June but not having large gatherings. I feel our gov’t will take things very slowly.
I’m sorry about the graduation. I do like the idea of making a video. Could you have a virtual ceremony and try for a real live ceremony in an evening in September?

My son is Minister of Technology for a church (yep, it's a real job) and they are thinking of having easter in the parking lot with the sermon broadcast over the radio. You can get broadcast stations that only go like a couple hundred feet or something. Then you could show the slideshow on the wall of the building everyone facing. Not needing a screen. I'd probably announce each kid and have them get out of the car, stand next to it and give everyone a chance to honk and cheer.

We have to order tassels, cords, signets, programs, gowns, caps, flowers, awards, etc in MARCH... At this point, we most likely won't even be able to order that stuff to have it here by the end of May which is when our graduation would be. Graduation field trip needs to be planned and paid for. Can't plan for a trip if the parks are closed. Can't pay for the trip if we're not able to do fundraising. There is far more that goes into graduation than just getting the kids on stage and giving them their diploma.

It's 8th grade so I'm actually OK with it not happening at all but our kids have been working hard for honors and all that with the plan to have an actual graduation. I don't really want to let them down. If we hadn't planned for the kids to have an actual graduation, I think it would be fine to just say nope this is promotion, you all go to high school. Quite honestly, I'd love to see 8th grade just become promotion with a big party and not have a whole graduation thing with caps/gowns/honors/all that hoopla. We have kids who get their hair and nails done and limos! So, to answer your question, yes, it would be better to just get the kids on stage but I'm truly ok with nothing happening at all.

I’m sure they would be more than happy to sell it to your school in May. But March is late—we ordered ours in October! The filed trip may be modified or pay-per-person, but you could still go to a park.

We cannot have students pay for their own trips because we are a title 1 school. I'm sure they would be more than happy to sell the grad regalia to us now. Problem is there is no one at school or in the district office to do any of the purchasing paperwork. I asked this week.

But those things can be ordered shortly before they are needed. The company will need your business and I’m sure will work hard to make it happen. As for the fundraising... maybe someone can find a corporate sponsor? Easier said than done these days, I know. Does your school buy the items outright? Maybe ask for donations of caps and gowns from the community. It may not be exactly the same, but it can be done if it’s safe to do so.

I have parents who have asked to purchase them for their students to keep, which would be a first in my 20 years at the school. We've never had parents want to purchase caps/gowns for their kids! That's a whole other mess to deal with. We're VERY rural so not really much in the way of corporate sponsors. I do like that idea tho. Whatever happens will happen. I'm still waiting on word of if we will be out for the remainder of the school year. THEN I can work on getting the ball in motion for whatever we will be doing/not doing.
