I do half my shopping at Aldi and half at Asda. I have got to know many of the Asda staff and they are a really great bunch. They have shared with me how poor an employer Asda is. I know that sounds unprofessional, but I have known a lot of them for years now. I am not surprised therefore to hear they are being sued. Unfortunately where I live, employment opportunities are few and far between, so many of them are just grateful to even have a job.

I remember when we were in Scotland 4 years ago we found Asda and it saved the day. I felt at home because it was just like a Wal-Mart. We had 2 cars and desperately needed cell phones to communicate, as we'd already been separated once. When we saw Asda it was like the clouds parted and the angels sang, lol!

Interesting.....I could argue it from a US law perspective, but am very interested to see what the UK does.
At the end of the article posted is the very heart of the matter: "It is also often difficult to compare what people earn if they undertake work which is very different. And comparing hourly rates is very different from comparing the pay of salaried staff. Under equality law, pay should be the same for employment of equal value. That can often be a matter of judgement. And, as in this case, that is where the battle lies. "
I could see a case if it was between the same positions at two different stores (however even then could argue one location is harder to staff in a worse location, etc so there should be a "shift differential"). Or even between males and females doing the same job. But valuing two different jobs in relation to each other is often harder.
But many moons ago, when I worked at Walmart, the night stocking staff was paid more for that shift and I am sure the actual warehouse workers made more than us. It was a much more physical/hard labor job than those in the stores. Don't know how ASDA does it and it will be interesting to see how this turns out. I suspect Walmart will fight it as hard as they can. If they lose, you can expect prices to increase to offset the higher wages.
