I want to send my students birthday cards but don't want to offend. Is it offensive? Should I just refrain from cards that say happy birthday?

Based on a former coworker's wishes, I would just send a generic, fun, "Thinking of You" type of card.

Please don't send any sort of card or wish them a happy birthday, they will be offended however genuine the thought is. JW don't celebrate any events that honour people and others should respect that if they know that they are JW.

Don’t send a Jehovah’s Witness a Birthday card. They don’t celebrate. Send a thinking of you card if you want to send something.

Just to clarify JW do celebrate events that honour people such as wedding anniversaries, graduations etc. Birthdays and Christmas are not celebrated.

Don't send a JW a birthday card. Don't tell an atheist you're praying for them. Don't serve pork or alcohol to a Muslim. Etc.
I agree that a "Thinking of you" card is ok.

I thought they are big on Jesus. Says me who knows nothing about JW. The reason they don't celebrate Christmas is because there is no proof Jesus was born on 25th December, and because of the pagan roots of the celebration. They also view Jesus differently from mainstream Christianity in that they do not believe Jesus is part of the trinity, but an entity seperate from Jehovah (God)

I should have clarified that I am sending cards to Sll the kids who have birthdays - about 25 per week. I don’t know of any that are JW because we don’t track that. Is it a big enough deal that I should not send any?

I just know lots of people have misconceptions about JW so just wanted to clarify My extended family are JW and some of the things that are said to them are shocking.

I have had several JW kids in my classroom. They were not allowed to celebrate their birthday and some wouldn't celebrate anyone's birthday if treats were brought in for the day. A card without a birthday greeting would certainly be appropriate.

Is it a big enough deal that I should not send any? No, I personally don't think so. If you unintentionally send one to a Jehovah's Witness, I'm sure this is something that they have dealt with a lot already.
