I went to the grocery store at 6:00 this morning. They let in seniors only in the first hour while the store is clean and not crowded. There were only a couple of other shoppers and one had a mask on. They did that here (Florida) and the store was completely packed there were no carts left. Turns out, everybody here is over 60 and needs toilet paper. Worse than Black Friday at Walmart. ![O_o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/browraise.png) I'm not wearing a mask because, even if I could find one, I'm not going anywhere.

I'm wearing a mask or bandanna when I'm out, live in Southern California and the county and state recommends it.

Yes. Our Health Department is suggesting it. I found a tutorial on FB that shows you how to make no sew masks. No Sew Mask with hair ties

I had a friend in PA who is a home health nurse ask me to make her and her DH a few with filter pockets. I posted online that I was making them and now everyone wants one! I didn’t make myself one yet. Tomorrow, early morning, I am dropping one at the elementary school for my DD’s old principal. She’s passing out lunch and chromebooks. She’ll need her own filter to add. I put a piece of wire for an adjustable nose piece. I have opened N95 masks here from when I sandblast. I’ll keep them in case we need them. I don’t have any masks for me or my family. Guess it’s time to look at Etsy or get creative with my tiny bag of fabric scraps....

hey’re not to keep you from getting sick. They are to prevent you from getting *someone else* sick if you have the virus but don’t know you have it. Out in the community that's the correct theory, but I can guarantee you that's not why 90% of the average population are wearing them. They see hospital staff wearing them as personal protection and they think they are doing them same thing. Very few people who are currently asymptomatic are aware enough to think they have it and will wear a mask to protect others, most people are wearing them because they think it will protect them from catching it from someone else...and then if the do encounter someone with the virus then they aren't going to handle that mask correctly and probably contaminate themselves after the encounter anyway.

Definitely. I'm getting ready to go to Costco and I'll be wearing one.
I have one N-95 in my closet from last year when we had a clean-up day at church after the lower level flooded. The guy in charge made us wear one because of the mold. I haven't used it since, and I put it out in the sun yesterday for several hours. I'm going to wear this one, covered by a bandana because I don't want people to think I took an N-95 away from a hospital worker.
My other main project for today, besides Costco, is to try making one of the no-sew ones that have a pocket where you can slip in a filter. I bought some HEPA vacuum cleaner bags which were recommended as filters.
This is one of those things that's in the category, for me anyway, of "if it can't hurt then do it".... like taking Tylenol instead of Advil, or taking extra vitamin C, etc. No we don't have any official studies yet, but this is all too new for that. So if it's not harmful then I'm going on the assumption that "who knows, and it might just help".

And wondered where I could check to know for sure if the bags did or did not have one. Which bags were recommended to you and why? I found a filter that is supposed to block the same size particles as an N95, not the same but the best I could find, but it was plated and I don’t know if I’d be able to take it apart and how many masks could be made of it.

Here is a study that was just done on fabrics for masks. I have been making them for family and people that need them. I think this has great info on fabrics. www.newswise.com/articles/testing-shows-type-of-cloth-used-in-homemade-masks-makes-a-difference-doctors-sayAnd yes, I am wearing a mask I made when I go to pickup groceries or medications. I don't go in the store. I only do drive-thru or pickup. We walk every morning but do not wear masks then. We usually only run into one or two people, and we walk by with a large distance between us.

That’s what I’m planning for DH to go over his mask until we can get some made. So I was just on Amazon and the shipping times are the 9th at the earliest that I could find. So if you want some you might want to order ASAP. Do you need me to send you two handmade fabric AB masks, dewryce? Elaine, myDH and are are older and compromised. May O buy 2 masks from you?

I plan on making a few masks this weekend with left over scrap fabric. DH and I will wear them when one of us goes out to get groceries next week. I'm not convinced the fabric masks offer much protection. The biggest benefit IMO will be a barrier for not touching nose and mouth.

I haven't until now, but just ordered some cloth ones on Etsy. I have air purifyer sheets, I'm wondering If I can use those for the filter?
I have a couple surgical ones just from our home medicine cabinet (already opened so wouldn't think hospitals would want) I'm going to wear one when I shop tonight.

Especially with them being right up against your face. But they're not right up against your face... at least not with the design that I saw. You put a piece of the filter in between the layers of cloth. I need to find the article that I read that rated all the various materials people could be using... the HEPA filters were high up on the list, and also "blended" tee-shirts, i.e., ones that are not 100% cotton. So a double layer of tee-shirt with a piece of the vacuum filter inside seems like it should be pretty good. Better than nothing.

I haven't until this point, but I will the next time I go out. Which shouldn't be for another 7-10 days at least. I'm trying to only go out once every 2-3 weeks. The last time out was last Sunday for groceries and mail run (I have a PO Box). I went super early, and only talked to the guy putting groceries in my car, from a very safe distance.
ETA: I have asthma, so am being super careful (and overly paranoid). Plus, it seems like maybe the tide is turning on the whole "only wear masks if you're sick" thing. I'm reading more articles indicating that maybe Asia has the right idea.

If you have any extra fabric, I would love one or two for my grandmother. She hasn’t left her house in weeks but she’s an 83 year old breast cancer survivor who has a huge check up in May that so far isn’t rescheduled. I know they won’t have masks at the facility like they always do. (And yes, I asked if there were portable mammogram machines they can bring to her house 😂😂😂) We ordered some on Etsy too but they’re so backordered I’m stunned!

No but I will if the governor of Virginia tell me to do so What is he currently saying? I’ve had zoom meetings his last few press conferences and one again today at 2. He’s a medical doctor and I try to put my trust knowing he’s making both political and medical decisions due to his background.

For these of you who say you can't sew try a hot glue gun. I have use them for upholstering and sewing tasks for years and hot glue works just fine.
Also panty liners can be used for a filter if you have no other option. Not perfect but better than nothing.

I am sewing masks like a crazy woman. Everybody and their brother know that I made some for the local rescue squad and now they want them. I am concentrating on our family and employees first, then I will make them by request.
