I took Gadget to the vet the other day to get his teeth cleaned. They also did a culture of the inside of his ears. They did a heart warm test which was negative. Thank god. They also looked at his eye which was looking nasty. A few months ago I had him in there and they looked at the eye and said it looked fine. It had looked larger then the other one for a while and I thought something was wrong with it then. but they said it was ok so I didn't think more about it. The other day when the doctor looked at it she said it looked like it was ulcerated and they would check it more closely when he was out. Well, it is bad, we have to put eye drops in it 4 times a day and we are hoping it heals or he could lose the eye. i really don't want a one eyed dog... poor little guy. He ended up getting 8 teeth pulled. They are all in front between his k9's We have pain meds for that and for his eye. and antibiotics. So with all the meds he has to take around the clock every 6 8 and 12 hours I have major amounts of alarms on my phone to tell me what meds and what time to give them. I have been doing this for 3 days now and it is driving me nuts. I have another 10 days to go. not sure how I can keep this up.....
I don't sleep good as is but to have an alarm wake me up just as I got to sleep SUCKS!
He has to go back next Wednesday to get his eye rechecked., Hopefully it is improving. I will be taking all three dogs in at the same time. I know most people would say this is an easy task but with Gadget and Pearl it is no problem. With Skip well, there are so many things that make it bad. He hates people, ?Hates other dogs, hates being at the vets, Barks the whole time. can't have him in the waiting room because of all these issues. usually daughter and I double team and take him and pearl in the stroller while I hold Gadget but this time I will be by myself and I can't control skip or stay outside with him until I go into the room and beside waiting. So I think I am going to leave 2 in the car and rotate them through. the 2 will be just getting the blood drawn for the heart warm test so I am thinking that I can hand one off tot he doc while they are in the back with him I can get Pearl out of the car and ready to be handed off. but then there is getting skip back from the doc. because the hand offs are the hardest. the person handing him off to me can not touch me or skip will attack. might have to refigure this one out... I don't want this appointment taking all afternoon, I know they are really busy and I don't want to take up more time then normal for these simple tasks.
what say the Peas on this one?

Not sure about your appointment, but as for Gadget...my dog had, in one year, ear infections, eye infections, tooth extractions, and multiple skin infections. It turned out she had developed very bad allergies. Given that you've had several of the same issues, I would ask the vet if that's possible.

I would not leave them in the car. When I have to take all three dogs, the people at the vets office will come out and help me to get them in, if I am by myself. I started doing that after one got scared of a big dog, backed out of her harness, made a run for the doors, which opened for her, then ran out onto the parking lot. She just wanted to get in the car and go home. Scared me to death. If you ask, they will help. Hope your little fur baby's eye will be fine when you go back Wednesday.
You will get through 10 more days. It is not fun, but there will be an end in sight.

I feel for you. Our dog has this horrible shrill scream when she sees other dogs. While it gets us very speedy service at the vet's, when DH left her recently to have some tests run they called him after about 20 minutes (just enough time for him to get home) and asked him to come get her because she was so obnoxious.
As for the ulcerated eye...we dealt with a bad ulceration for several months last year. Two vets tried multiple, multiple meds and drops to no avail. The second vet finally referred us to a canine ophthalmologist. OMG! What a Godsend. I imagined it costing thousands of dollars but surprisingly three visits, medication and procedures were less than $400. They ended up debriding her ulcer and doing drops. We saw improvement within 24 hours. I would suggest asking if there is a canine ophthalmologist in your area.

Why not put all 3 dogs on leashes. When you arrive, let them know that you are there and tell them you will wait outside until a room is ready. When a room is ready, take all 3 dogs in on their leashes and go into the room. Instead of handing off the dog, hand off the leash. Then you don't have to worry about the dog attacking the employee.
I hope your pups eye gets better. If He does lose an eye, he will be fine. I had a dog that went blind at 5 years old and spent the rest of his life not seeing anything, not even shadows. They told me that it was possible he could lose one or both of his eyes at some point during his life due to a number of reasons. They would only remove his eyes if he was in pain. The doggie ophthalmologist told me that when a dogs eye is removed, they get relief pretty much immediately. I was lucky and my dog never had to have either of his eyes removed but I would have done it if he needed it.
Good luck with all of your pups!

Poor pup! Hoping his eye heals up quickly
Is there a reason all 3 have to go at the same time. Seems overwhelming to me and i'd definitely be breaking it up into more than one appt!

How about putting the 2 smallest ones in carriers. Then you can take the carriers in and set them down, then bring in the one who needs to be kept away from other dogs and people. Or put him in the carrier. If the carriers with dogs inside are too heavy to carry, take the empty carriers in first, then bring in the doggies.

Vet offices have back/side doors and vet techs. They should be helpful and offer you a hand (via the vet tech) and offer you the side/back door. If they don't, definitely ask. - Leave the dogs in the car for a moment, go check in, ask for help, proceed from there.
And eebud is right - you should get a room all to yourself with all 3 dogs.

thank you ladies for the responses.
His ear infections have been going on for most of his life. the docs have come to the conclusion that the antibiotics and the ear drops are not the right meds for him. That is why they did the ear culture. As for any allergies he is allergic to chicken... took that out of his diet over a year ago and he seems to be much better. his skin issues have gone away. as for the eye they think he poked it on something. and I don't doubt he did because he is so tiny he could have gotten it poked by any of the bushes outside.
As for taking them all to the vets at the same time I do this because trying to get appointments at our vet is crazy. They are so busy it is nuts. I had to wait almost 2 months for the one this week.
The reason I don't put them on leashes is one they are small dogs. too many people. too many other dogs. Skip can't be anywhere near people or dogs. he will eat them. He has major mental issues. I wouldn't put them on the floor of a vet clinic anyway you never know what they will pick up. As for leaving them in the car it isn't like I will be leaving them in the car for a long time just long enough to hand one off to the vet and go get the second one.
We already have a specialist lined up if this go round with his eye doesn't work. We know the specialist personally so it will be easy to have him looked at. We did this with his hip last year. had our vet do all they could and then we went for a second opinion and then had our vet do the surgery. the specialist said our vet was good at this kind of surgery and Gadget would do good.
another reason we can't put skip on a leash and hand off the leash is because the vet would never be able to pick him up off the floor. we have a system when handing him off. we just turn his back to the person set him on the table and the vet puts her hands where mine and and then she walks away fast. as long as skip doesn't see the vet close to me all is well.
I'm not worried about him having no eye. i just don't want him to have to go through that. I have a friend that has a Chinese crested and he lost his eye 4 or 5 years ago and he does great with one eye.
I always get a room to myself when we go to the vet unless we go into the big room. and we don't do that with skip. All the vets know that skip is an issue dog. he is perfectly fine after he is out of my hands and in the vets hands. Our vets have a side door. and an outside waiting area. which is nice for the warm weather but it is now pretty cold here. I don't have carriers for my dogs. I have a stroller. and we usually put Skip and Pearl in it and carry gadget but there is usually 2 of us. I think it would be easier for me if I just leave 2 in the car and take one in and swap them out. putting skip and pearl in the stroller at the car would be easy but getting them out wouldn't be so easy with having to hold gadget. I will figure it out... I think I will leave them in the car and check in.. I do know that I got the appointment at the quietest time of the day so that this will be easier on all involved.
Pearl is perfect when she goes to the vet. She shakes some but that is because she hates it there. but she doesn't react to anything she just sits there. gadget isn't a problem either. usually I carry him and he wiggles around. Skip is the main issue. I can't carry him and control him and put the other 2 in the stroller. it takes both hands to control him and keep him away from other people.

I am learning so much on this site. Who knew that there were pet/canine ophthalmologist ?
When we had our dog, we just went to the regular local vet. I never thought of there being specialities within the vet community but it does make sense.
All the best for you & your pup.

I hope it all goes well! My suggestion would be to take each dog into the vet one by one on leash, then have the tech put each dog into a cage in the back....bring out one at a time for vet attention with you in the room. I don't take more than one at a time to the vet....I prefer to space out the costs and since they don't want to go into the door, I pick them up. But they are little doxies. My male doxie screams like you are cutting off his toes when they trim his nails. Silly dog.
I think I'd have to find another vet if I had to make appts. 2 months in advance. Is that just for check ups or when they have an issue? I can usually get my dog in that day if I call early enough for an issue. When it's a wellness visit, I make the appt. a week or so ahead so I can chose what time.

A one eye dog still gives a lot of love like a 2 eyed pup can...call the vet and ask on going in at a back door, that should help.
Our vet lets clients do this...should help with some of that issue...good luck on the out come for all your babies...

"I have been doing this for 3 days now and it is driving me nuts. I have another 10 days to go. not sure how I can keep this up..... "
ain't it fun? I remember besides me being sick and all the meds I take, my boy was diabetic (testing and shots every day) and my girl was old, blind and I don't think she could hear anymore... AND she wanted to walk ALL the time - at least every few hours. That was 24/7 - so I was up every night every few hours out there walking her. 20 - 30 minutes of it. She loved to walk (otherwise she was just sleeping on the bed). It does take a toll on ya!
as for the 3 of them - I'd take skip another day! hope gadget's eye gets better!
