I have posted in the past about DS's school wanting to retain him. He is currently in 3rd grade/8 years old. They approached the topic at the end of 1st and end of 2nd. DH and I declined each time and continued over this last summer his tutoring with his cognitive therapist. School conferences are scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving for all the students and January is when we have the annual meeting with the principal and teacher to discuss his status and that is when retention is usually thrown out for discussion.
DS had to stay at after school for the first time this year and I went to pick him up after I got off work. His teacher just happened to still be there and I stopped by to say hi. Long story short, she said she is very pleased with how he is doing, he is confident, raises his hand to answer questions and is correct more often than not in his answers. She said as of right now she has nothing but good things to say at the conference. I asked her if we were meeting to discuss retention or not, would it even be brought up and she looked at me like I had two heads and said NO!! He made a 70 percent on a math chapter test and that is the kind of score that calls for ice cream for dinner. His first two spelling test of the year were 30 and 45 percent and since then he has received two 100's, a 90 and an 87. His "academic maturity" which is what they were most worried about seems to be on par or a little better than others in his class. He has worked so hard and DH and I are proud of his efforts. He gets so excited to present us with his folder the teacher sends graded work home in.
This teacher is so wonderful. It seems like she has made it her mission this year to help DS succeed. He attends a small, private, Catholic school and they are not mandated at all to make any accommodations for him but each teacher he has had so far does whatever they can. I haven't always agreed with the school but I will say they have always been supportive and even when we have disagreed, been professional.
Thanks for reading.
