I just saw a video on FB from a nurse. She said if you’re going to wear gloves, wear one glove so you have a clean hand and dirty hand.
The gloved (dirty) hand pushes the cart and puts all the groceries in the cart.
The bare (clean) hand handles things like the phone and credit card.
Push the buttons on CC machine at checkout with the dirty hand.
Clean hand uses keys and opens car door.
Wipe everything down before you put it in the cart.
Take the glove off by grabbing it from the inside (clean) and pulling it over itself, leaving all the dirty inside.
ETA I couldn’t Share the video, but she did start by saying she doesn’t use gloves, just WASH AND SANITIZE YOUR HANDS. But for those who insist on wearing gloves, this will be more beneficial.

Maybe I am klutzy, but I can’t always push a cart with one hand. And some carts need two hands just to turn a corner. Lol! But, this is a great tip! Thanks for sharing!

I compared it to when breading chicken or whatever and you have a "wet" hand and a "dry" hand. And I thought my gloved or "dirty" hand would be my right (or dominant) as it is the easier to use, and more apt to automatically touch things. Leaving my other hand to touch things more deliberately, like today when had to brush hair off my face, more likely my left hand would be clean/ less used. I had to pick up and drop off things at DD's (put in garage, no contact) and it actually really worked well.

That's why I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in the car and use it liberally on the cart handle and shelf etc.

I've been wearing one glove when I get gas. The gloved hand touches the pump and the keypad buttons. Ungloved hand holds credit cards, opens tank & door handle, etc. Then I peel off the glove and toss it before I get back in the car. I probably look ridiculous because I'm concentrating so hard on what to touch with each hand but I'm almost out of wipes and hand sanitizer so I'm getting creative! lol

That seems like an awful amount of work and complicated enough that many will do it wrong. Just don't wear gloves, don't touch your face, clean your hands as after you are done with your cart, and wipe down your credit card. Phone stays in pocket the whole time.
It's like people think you will get COVID19 through your hands. Wash them. Don't touch your face. If your hands get compromised, just remember to clean whatever you touched which should be minimal. I mean, the wearing of a glove to pump gas is stupid.

She said I failed. I did really well until I used my gloved hand to shut the gas tank door. My husband came to my defense saying that by the time I needed gas again the virus would be long gone from the door. True. Won’t need to fill up again for a couple of weeks at least.

Yeah, it actually came to me in long car ride to appointment. Vent air movement getting hair in my eyes. Not wanting to "touch my face" it occurred to me that my left hand was "safer" as right was use for most everything. and then, well my mind wandered. to gloved, clean hand, dirty hand, breading chicken and on and on. Me and my mind are weird.

I used dog waste bags tonight, and they were perfect. I needed to pick up a prescription so when I had to pay I was able to slide my hands out of the bag and the bags stayed open. After I paid and put my card away, I just slid both hands in the open Dog bags.

That's way too much trouble. If there are no wipes I use my arms to push the cart. I use the back of my knuckles on the screen (like I always have) and then use hand sanitizer when I'm all done.

TBH I don't know if I could do it for a longer time without practice (just like breading chicken, wet/dry) but it was handy today for short term bursts. Stopped at Walmart pickup and guy put stuff in my trunk. Some things for me some to drop off at DD's place. I used this method to sort the stuff in DD's and my piles as I had no place to wash hands on way/ long drive. l then took off loose glove and left in corner of my trunk. Which also leads to another insight from today. (long drive) With all the fast food spots being drive thru only and other closings, all my "pee stops" along the way were closed. Luckily I thought ahead and didn't take my diuretic this morning. gsquaredmom guess what was among my Walmart pick up? You guessed it, poop bags. To share with DD and us.

I've always worn gloves to pump gas. I've had times where my hands ended up smelling like gasoline. 🤢 I lost one a while back but luckily it was the left one. So I actually do pump gas with one glove but it's not by choice. 😅

Maybe I am klutzy, but I can’t always push a cart with one hand. And some carts need two hands just to turn a corner. Lol! But, this is a great tip! Thanks for sharing! It’s actually easier to pull it with one hand than to push it. I also carry an alcohol wipe in my clean hand which prevents me from using it out of habit. Then I use the alcohol pad to wipe down my credit card after using it.

I’ve always done this because of my 1970’s nurse training and it’s an ingrained habit now . It was the technique we were taught for changing dressings but I employ it for everything inc changing nappies 😬

Personally I'm not worrying about touching things while I'm out. We can't get the virus through our skin. I think teaching in an elementary school for so many years has trained me never to touch my face. And also working in a hospital where there's hand disinfectant everywhere and sinks for washing hands almost everywhere. Gloves sometimes give people a false sense of security...I've seen people adjusting their face mask while wearing gloves which they might not do with bare hands. Although who knows, maybe they would do it with bare hands also. Also, I can't push a cart with one hand for very long.

Seems like a lot to remember but would be a good if you can pull it off.
I’ve been finding myself using my firearms to push the cart, even though they stores have been wiping them off before giving them out. Some of the newer carts are so big and tall that it is more comfortable for me to push that way anyway.

I just "clean" my gloves with hand sanitizer before I reach for my card, keys etc. This sounds like a scene from Guns Akimbo. If you're pushing a cart with firearms, I bet you don't have any problems with people getting in your personal space.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just wipe the cart handle down and use hands sanitizer before getting back into your car? I don’t understand the need for gloves. What exactly are we trying to achieve here?

Well, my (not stupid) DH uses one gloved hand to pump his gas, as his dirty hand. He works in a nursing home and washes his hands and uses hand sanitizer all day, every day. They.are.shot. Sanitizer burns and sometimes even putting on lotion hurts. Pumping gas is one case where washing immediately isn’t an option and he can avoid using the hand sanitizer. Also, it’s a lot easier for him to ensure he takes his glove off properly, than it is to ensure he gets the hand sanitizer everywhere it needs to be. It has been working very well for him.
He has not used gloves the 2 times he has been into the store, but we discussed it. He has a lifelong habit of biting his nails, but when he wears gloves at work it makes that impossible. Also, he says they’re enough of a distraction when he wears them that he’s less likely to touch his face. Is that universal? I’m sure it’s not, and I understand the false security it gives some, especially if they don’t quite understand how it works. But it holds true for him. I also find it’s a lot easier to tell someone “just don’t touch your face,” than it is for someone with that ingrained habit to actually not touch their face, no matter how hard they try. It’s just not that simple.
So if someone finds a safe solution that works for them, they should use it. If anyone has some medical advice to pass on perhaps it can be done without the insults and judgement. People are doing their best and making a sincere effort to keep themselves, and everyone they are in contact with, safe. You may not agree with how they go about it, and it may not even be a good idea, but surely there is a better way to pass that opinion on without being purposefully insulting.
