I have only done a few Zooms, some were work related, two were hangout related. The first I couldn't get the sound to work at all so I couldn't hear the person talking. Left that one quickly, but it was a voluntary training.
The first hangout related was with a group of people from work. All was great until one guy came on about an hour in. There were seven of us in that chat. I can deal with people walking around holding their phones / computers so the video is wonky, that's fine because their portion of the window is small. But after this guy walked from one end of the house to the other and finally found where he was going to stay, he didn't mute his microphone. Two kids in the background, two cats, a dog, and then he started having a conversation with his wife about what he fed the kids for lunch, all the while walked away from the computer so he wasn't engaged with us at all. We tried to ignore him, but it got to a point where we couldn't hear each other over his microphone. I said his name loudly and told him to mute himself. He didn't hear me. Another person in our group YELLED his name to get his attention and told him to mute. He didn't, but he came back to our conversation. After about three more minutes he said he was going to go make dinner and logged off. Crazy.

I tried Zoom with my friends the other day and it kept freezing and at one point it kicked me out. And then when I rejoined my microphone echoed. It was frustrating. It did tell me after 40 minutes that the time was usually up but right now it was going to keep going for free.
I am doing Google Meet with my students. I don't really know how to use it yet. I am still learning. I have to keep asking the kids how to do stuff. I haven't had any problem with it freezing up.

Why people can't mute themselves I have NO idea. NONE. I ping people constantly and ask them to mute themselves. The problem is once I thought I was mute (I was on the phone only) and I was wandering around the house chatting to the dogs when finally someone said something so I am a little sympathetic. But when you're on your computer you should be able to see!!! And Teams makes it very easy. Also, if you are hearing someone make noise, just check and see if that person is YOU!! BUT!! I use a Mac at work. I am one of maybe 10 people out of 2000 who have a Mac. Macs do not interact well with any office software so Teams and Outlook and Skype do NOT like Mac and do not show when I am in a meeting. It is very annoying. But I don't blame anyone for pinging me. ETA: Oh, I am not stupid with technology, but it was SO SO loud outside of my house and my computer was at its loudest, so I put my ear up to the speaker to hear what someone was saying. There were so many of us on the call, I didn't see myself on video so I forgot my video was on. And yes, everyone just saw my ear and laughed. Sigh.

It doesn't have some of the fancy features of Zoom, but free Zoom is not okay for K-12. If you give your kids some norms to work with, that helps. Keeping your mic off while others are talking, inviting others to speak by name, using the chat feature to moderate, stuff like that. You can copy and paste the entire chat to save it into a Google or Word doc, too, in case you need to have a record of questions kids asked so you can answer them later, etc. If you're using Meet on a laptop/desktop using Chrome browser, this is a nice extension to get that "Brady Bunch" grid view: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-meet-grid-view/bjkegbgpfgpikgkfidhcihhiflbjgfic

Do most people even think of it? I dont know that I even look anymore. It seems that most professionals click the little button that mutes everyone when they arrive.
I should only have to mute myself when I've unmuted myself right?

We’re using Meet in our district and it is sooo annoying during these massive staff meetings when people don’t mute themselves and all I hear is barking dogs. Come. On. I wish Meet let the organizer Mute All like Zoom does.

We are how many weeks into this? Shouldn't most people know mute their microphone when joining meetings with multiple people? What is your technology / work from home/ school from home vent? If it's a meeting with colleagues, probably. As a parent, I had never used it until now. I think I could figure it out, but it's been one on one meetings so far.
ETA: Apparently it is google meet

I should only have to mute myself when I've unmuted myself right? We almost never mute everyone when they arrive because most meetings are collaborative so everyone is continually speaking. You have to consciously mute yourself.

Oh be patient with us newbies to online meetings. I run a craft studio. No need for online meetings. Got my website adapted pretty quickly so I can sell crafts online and do curbside pickups and deliveries. Figured out how to do online canvas painting classes for kids on FB Live and how to upload them to YouTube afterwards. Yay, me. But Zoom? Never done it! But yesterday I had 2 Zoom meetings with the 2 women's networking groups I am in. The first was in the studio while I was working on orders. Couldn't figure out how to turn on video and how to turn off audio. Other members helped me. But I had to keep getting up when folks called to tell me they were outside to pick up their crafts. Then the second meeting happened right when I needed to drive across town to deliver a craft kit. So I walk outside carrying my phone, trying to keep my face in the window of the screen, but didn't think to turn off the sound and it was super windy! Someone comments "what's that noise?" Oh, just me, trying to figure this all out. I did figure out to tell everyone I was driving, mute my sound so the google maps comments didn't come through and turn off the video so I could just listen. People are patient with newbies. Don’t worry about that at all. The patience runs thin when you’re with the same group of people who have been in this together for 4 weeks. In the beginning we were all teaching each other and helping out, but now after 4 weeks you’re still having to remind people to mute themselves when they’re eating. In the end, it’s not that big a deal. These are just minor annoyances and if that’s the worst I have to deal with right now I consider myself lucky.

Grid View made life a lot better! Can I do this while in meet? I just added the extension, but I am in a meeting right now I think you just have to close and reopen. I mean... based on my experience you won't miss much~!? hahahahaha

Thank you for the opportunity to vent: For the love of all that is holy, stop pinging me on Teams when I'm showing 'busy' or 'in a meeting'. Would you barge right on into a conference room to ask me your question if you could see me in there speaking with someone? No, you would not. You would be patient and wait until I walked out. Better yet, you would give me 5 or 10 minutes to use the restroom first before ambushing me with your 'emergency'. Mamma mia. This!!! A thousand times THIS! People are either pinging me on Teams or Skype (haven’t phased it out yet). Drives me NUTS!! Pinging mr is the equivalent of standing at my desk tapping your foot.

I don’t think the pinging you whole you are on a call will stop. Most days I have back to back calls all day long. That would mean no one could send me a chat all day long.
Ping me whenever and I will respond as soon as I am able. But, I won’t expect you to stalk me to only send a chat when my status is green.

I see a ping as an 'I need your attention right now' type of message. Status: green OR 'really need your attention right this moment' = Ping me! By all means! Status: red AND can wait a little bit for a response? EMAIL!!!!

Webex doesn’t like me. I’ve used it for 4 different meetings (different groups) in one week. Most it works fine and then it acts like it doesn’t know me. Wants me to login from the email link and it keeps saying my login info is bad. I change login and it still won’t accept.
However if I login, which works fine, it won’t accept the meeting code
I spent a half hour on hold for support, which by the way I keep having to hit 1 to keep holding. I finally hung up.
🤦🏻♀️

If you didn't watch the Zoom sketch on SNL, it is worth watching. Some is over the top and dumb, but some is funny

If you didn't watch the Zoom sketch on SNL, it is worth watching. Some is over the top and dumb, but some is funny The only part that I found annoying was the stereotype that the older females were admins and both were not equipped to use technology. Please.
