I’m so pissed!
I spent about $100 last fall on some gorgeous parrot tulip bulbs. No plain Jane tulips for this gal. Got some hyacinth and crocus bulbs as well. I was so excited to see them bloom this spring.
But all along the one side of the house (just the one side) there are holes. Mother fucking squirrels have dug up my bulbs.
I hope they all choke and die.
And yes, NOW I have heard all the tips from grated Irish Spring soap to pepper to blood meal. And that’s great for this coming fall when I plant more. But that doesn’t help now!
gonna get me a slingshot and go squirrel hunting. 🤬🤬🤬

I feel your pain. A couple of years ago I planted 3 layers of bulbs in pots so I’d have flowers all spring. Squirrels got them all.

I tried bulbs once, almost 30 years ago. The squirrel ate them all. Never even bothered trying them again. I just buy pots of them at the nursery and keep them indoors.

We had custom made cushions for our deck. It seats 10. Squirrels ate our extremely expensive cushions in one night. I was ticked. We used a Critter Ridder and sachets of fabric softener pellets and they haven't returned, so far...
Our new neighbors have decided to put out feeders with tons of different foods for the squirrels. We have giant 80 foot+ cottonwood trees in the back yards all down the block that they just hang out in all year.
I feel your pain.

The next time you plant bulbs in autumn, put chicken wire on top (or use the plastic netting you can buy at the garden center). Secure the wire with bricks or those big pronged stakes that look like giant staples (can't remember what they're called).

I agree with lizacreates about covering with wire. Don't add bone meal. That attracts critters. We lose far fewer glads since we stopped planting with bone meal.

I used bars of Irish Spring in my garden last year to repel rabbits. It kept disappearing... it turns out mice like to eat it We grew a sunflower last year, the freaking squirrels would climb the sunflower and sit up there and eat the sunflower seeds right off the flower. I think this year I'm going to put one of those dog cones-of-shame around the plant when it's smaller and laugh my butt off when the squirrels slide off!

I put the plastic chicken wire stuff down when I planted last fall with bricks. They didn’t get the bulbs. My flowers are all blooming now.
FYI they also like elephant ear bulbs. Those buggers will dig them out, take 1 bite and leave them in my yard.
My neighbor feeds them all year round. I wish there was a way to keep them out of my yard.

Oh no!
I was just thinking yesterday that I missed squirrels. Belgium doesn’t seem to have them. They kept the dog entertained.

Squirrels got mine from the front yard planter, too. I have some pepper I normally sprinkle around them, but didn't do it this year. I feel your pain.

I've been planting bulbs at my new house only to discover the freshly turned soil was too appealing to the new puppy and he was digging them back up. Good thing he's cute. Little bugger dug up my basil, too. I've had to put a brick "collar" around each herb I planted to keep him from decimating more of them. Maybe he will chase the squirrels off and I won't have to deal with them as well.

I gave up on tulips after the first year, when they bloomed and the deer ate just the flower off each stem.
I only do daffodils now -- nobody seems to like the way they taste.

The squirrels taunt our dogs. They know their range with the underground fence and then in the fenced yard they stay just high enough. Rats with bushy tails!

I agree squirrels suck. They are just mice with fluffy tails! They're cute in the park. Our house was built in the 70s and was stuccoed then has little rocks over it. The mother effing squirrels can climb the house, the little rocks give them grip. I would like to feed the birds in the winter, they are enjoyable to watch and give life to the yard. As long as the sunflower seeds don't attract a squirrel. Or a woodpecker, then the eat the seeds, peck and kill the trees, peck any wood like the deck railing.
