I gave away all of my card making and mixed media stuff a couple of years ago, and now find myself itching to make some cards. I'm hoping the peas can help me figure out what to order to get started again.
Embossing/die cut machine >>> I used to have a Cuttlebug - what should I get to replace it? Is a Sidekick big enough? Or go for something larger like a Big Shot?
Stamp platform >>> I'm aware of the Misti brouhaha and that some folks feel strongly about it ... what kind of platform should I get?
Mixed media >>> my DD13 has some copics I can borrow .. I think I also may like Distress Oxides ... any thoughts on using those vs another media type?
I want to start with making some birthday cards that are gender neutral >>> any suggestions on a die and stamp set?
Is there anything I should have to get started??

I would NOT get a Sidekick. It’s too small for most of my card making needs.
I have a Big Shot, but I hate to recommend anything from Sizzix or Ellison, since they are suing other companies. Long story, but I feel they are using a legal loophole to eliminate competition. I refuse to buy anything from them. I can’t remember if you can still get a Cuttlebug, or if Spellbinder still sells a machine. Hopefully someone else can recommend something else.
I like Stampin’ Up’s stamp platform. I assume it’s still available, but I haven’t checked for awhile.
I recommend you check different stamp companies to see who has a style you like. There is an older thread on the Stamping/Cardmaking board that is about favorite stamp companies. There are a lot of choices out there. I have been buying from Heartfelt Creations and My Favorite Things lately. Their styles are very different from each other’s. Both have matching dies for many of their stamps. I am not as fond of the Lawn Fawn stamp style, but they have some fun dies. I never bought much from Queen and Company until recently, but they do some fun shaker card kits.
I use copics. As for stamp pads, that has it’s own thread over on the Stamping/Cardmaking board, too. You might want get helpful info there.

My first pick for tools would be something to cut paper with. A trimmer, guillotine, utility knife/metal ruler/cutting mat, whatever floats your boat. Everything else can be substituted for, to some degree or another, but the inability to cut straight paper greatly hampers 95% of cards. A trimmer usually comes with the added bonus of being able to score.
You can DIY your own stamp positioner, YouTube has lots of options from '5 minutes and nearly free' to 'some assembly and skills required'. So, depending on how much stamping you intend to do, may or may not be worth buying. I find an acrylic block gets the job done pretty well on its own. Your mileage may vary depending on dexterity.
No particular recommendations on stamps or dies, as most of mine are thrift finds.
As for media, use what you've got first, if anything. If there's a product you think you'd enjoy, get your hands on a sample and try it out. Just don't go crazy and buy half the product line before making a decision that you really like it or not!
