Does anyone else go to burn or live with someone who does?
Guys, this is HUGE.
70,000 people. No joke. They’re refunding tickets for anyone who asks for it, and asking anyone who can afford it to donate their ticket price to keep the organization afloat until next year.
Insane.
ETA: it’s not insane that they’re being careful. It’s absolutely the right call. Just....surreal I guess.

I personally am very glad it was cancelled. My sister insisted she was going. Nothing I could say to stop her. Thank you BM organizers for helping me to stop her. ETA: it’s not insane that they’re being careful. It’s absolutely the right call. Just....surreal I guess. Yeah surreal. That is millions of dollars lost. I am glad they cared more about the people than the money. ETA: or maybe it was legal ramifications? That is probably more like it. But who cares, I'm glad it is cancelled.

Coachella was already canceled and it has an average attendance of 100k/day. Every industry trade show was canceled and some of those are huge too.
The only thing surprising about Burning Man is that they waited this long.

Absolutely. The even isn’t until the end of August/beginning of September. There’s a chance that they would have been okay. But the event is so hard to control as far as hand washing/hygiene/interactions and people put SO MUCH money into being there. They decided that they couldn’t gamble other people’s money in a “maybe”

my dh had tickets lined up (with a drum group or something like that) so he is very sad it was cancelled. he does not think on line will be any substitute at all.. all his burning stuff is living in the living room and I have to clean the basement (major job) to get it out of there. he loves burning man. just another sad thing.

I think it is a good idea. While I believe public events will be happening by Labor Day, I don't think ones that large will be happening for a very, very long time. And yeah, trying to keep clean at BM is near impossible.

Don’t these productions have insurance that should kick in if something happens to where they cannot hold the event as planned?

I am a little surprised that it is cancelled already.
Comic-Con is still on from what I can see although I don't expect it to actually take place. Their ticket refund date is May 13 so they will be under pressure to make a decision in the next couple weeks.

I saw that Burning Man was cancelled and I was impressed that the organizers did so. I'm still waiting for a non-profit I'm a part of to cancel their 10,000+ people camping event in August. Or for that matter, camping events at the end of May to be cancelled! I think the organizers may be waiting until they are forced to do so by the local state extending shelter in place orders.

Everything is cancelled. I guess I am not shocked or bothered by this at all. I know a few "burners" that insisted they'd go no matter what. They are also vehement anti vaxxers. Science seems not to be their thing.

I don't think any major event is going to be safe until there's a vaccine. I know many events have been postponed until the fall, some that I had planned to originally attend, and I don't think the virus will be cleared out enough by then for thousands of people to be so densely gathered together. That's just my opinion.

We've been told not to expect sporting events or concerts to be allowed for 'quite some time yet', even when some other restrictions are lifted. The City of Munich is even talking of cancelling Oktoberfest for this year, which hasn't happened since it started back up after the war.

The sad part of cancelling such big events, as we've already seen, is the trickle down effect. The hotels, stores, etc that rely on these huge events are already suffering and this is another blow. My ds has gone for many years and I know lots of folks fly in from other areas so at least this gives them a chance to cancel air tickets and car rentals. As for asking ticket holders who can afford it to donate back their ticket refund, this is not new. I have several sets of tickets for shows at our local performing arts center that have been postponed or cancelled and been asked the same. In fact they called ticket holders for a June performance that is being postponed.

I got an email from the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta (first of October) that they are still planning on having it. I think it may end up being cancelled. I'm not sure if we will still go or not.

There are businesses in that area that count in the burn to put them in the black for the year.
