Since it is that time of year for scary stuff, and they are starting to show more horrors on t.v. I thought it would be fun to find out what some of your favourite horror movies are.
I LOVE scary movies. But not the slasher films that are becoming more predominant these days, or anything that involves torture (Saw, Hostel, etc.)
Dh and I started watching the original Nightmare on Elm Street last night, which is perhaps my all time favourite, and will finish it up tonight. I suppose some might classify it as a slasher film but I don't find that it has gratuitous violence. I think I always found it so scary because I dream all the time and the idea of the bad guy coming into your dreams to get you hit home for me.
Other favourites: The Shining It Sixth Sense American Werewolf in London (think we will watch this one tonight) Lost Boys
I am sure there are some that I am forgetting. I really like things which are more psychologically scary as opposed to jump out at you scary. There were a couple with numbers in the title whose names escape me right now, one with John Cusack.
Dh and ds do not really like scary movies but dd and I love them. How about you? Do you enjoy a scary movie? What are your favourites?

I LOVE scary movies. But not the slasher films that are becoming more predominant these days, or anything that involves torture (Saw, Hostel, etc.) I feel exactly this way. I love "ghost" movies but they almost always disappoint me because the start off good and then get stupid at the end. My all time favorite is The Shining. I have a bunch of scary ones lined up on Netflix, hoping to find another good one. Tonight I am watching "The Conjuring" and I am happy because DH is watching with me! He usuall y doesn't like them. I have high hopes, I heard its scary.

Original Halloween is my favorite. The movie with John Cusack is "1408" I think-another one I love. I also love Drag Me to Hell and Scream.

Oh yes, the first Hallowe'en. Can't believe I forgot that one!
Oldpeanewname, I love tree lined streets. We have lots of mature trees on our street, but it is not quite the same.
I have never seen Blair Witch Project. I should watch for it to see if they play it this season. They are ramping up the scary movies now on t.v.

Halloween, The Ring, Friday the 13th part 2 & The Grudge are high on my list. Blair Witch is up there. My best friend has a house on 20 acres of wooded land and her driveway is 1/2 mile long. Can you say creepy? I've always wanted run an extension cord outside and watch it on their front porch. One of these days . . . I also love/hate The Strangers. I scary movies and this is the only one I don't think I could watch again. My all time favorite is the original Friday the 13th. First of all, it's a classic and secondly, as I mentioned in another thread, it has sentimental meaning. It was filmed locally and I have slept at Camp Crystal Lake. It will always have a special place in my heart.

I just finished watching Deliver Us From Evil with Eric Bana. It was dark, creepy and interesting. Other movies I enjoy are Psycho, The Others, Hannibal, Resident Evil, Poltergeist, Amityville Horror, Carrie and Pan's Labrynth. I cannot do movies like Saw, Final Destination, Hostel or The Hills Have Eyes. Especially the last one, can't even think of it without it disturbing me.

While it doesn't scare me anymore, it sure did the first time I saw it when I was around 12! And that Zuni fetish! Classic!!

The Ring... freaks me out, especially when watching alone.
Does anyone watch Hocus Pocus? Not scary, but entertaining.

I am not sure I would say that it is my favorite, but one that scared the crap out of me was Burnt Offerings with Karen Black. I saw it in the theater when I was in High School many many moons ago and it still creeps me out after all these years.

I watched Housebound last night and it was awesome! It comes from New Zealand and is a mix of dark comedy/ghost story/murder mystery. The opening scene had me laughing so hard! It had a few really good spooky moments, too.

Forgot to say last time, thanks 1lear for the name of that movie!
Some other good ones here. I did like Rosemary's Baby, and though I have not seen it since I was a girl, The Omen was a scary one too.
Disneypal, dh has mentioned The Changeling before, and thinks it is very scary. I have never seen it myself.

My list is mostly the oldies but goodies:
The Haunting (the original from the 60's) Night of the Living Dead (again, the original) John Carpenter's Vampires The Uninvited (with Emily Browning) The Ring
Tiffanytwisted, I remember Trilogy of Terror. The one where the little idol chases Karen Black around with a knife. I haven't seen that one in ages.

Stir of Echoes and The Orphanage (it's Spanish, so really El Orfanato, and it is subtitled but completely worth it).

I also like: The Shining Rosemary's Baby Poltergeist (just for the clown doll alone) The Omen (original, please!) and Omen 2

The Excorsist
The Conjuring, almost had to turn it off

Slight hijack . . .
On just about every list of scary movies that I've seen (and I've checked quite a few), the movie Suspiria is listed. A few years ago I recorded onto DVD from the TV (shhhh) and we watched in on Scary Movie Nite, all excited to be terrified. Has anyone else seen this movie? We were confused and actually stopped watching it. About a year later, we figured we must have missed something, so we tried again. We were a little less confused, but it was more weird than scary. I'm glad I didn't buy/rent the thing. How the heck did it make it onto all these lists?
Anyone who's seen it able to offer me some perspective?

Disneypal, dh has mentioned The Changeling before, and thinks it is very scary. I have never seen it myself. heartcat, I saw this at least 25 years ago and remember it was really good. I've been looking for it on Netflix (streaming), Amazon Prime, HULU for years now and it isn't available anywhere. Sometimes movies from way back seemed really good and then when you see them again, they just don't hold up very well to time (quite a few of the comedies from the 80's especially).
I like the Stephen King movie The Langoliers--not scary so much as really creepy. Also, really like the old movie Sole Survivor (it has Billy Zane in it) and a recent one called the Passenger. I think these probably qualify as mystery more than horror.

I love scary movies, but I have seen so many by now, that it takes a LOT to keep my interest for more than half an hour. I will mention the Scream movies, because I was a teenager when the first ones came out, and they are dear to my heart The Orphanage, that someone else also recommended is REALLY good! The Woman In Black with Daniel Radcliff was good. The Conjuring is also good. I re-watched The Blair Witch Project a few months ago, because I hadn't seen it in years, and man was it boring But it totally freaked us out when it came out! If you like ghosts and monsters; watch Supernatural, some of their episodes are scary as hell and great for a late night viewing. If you like slashers/whodunnits; watch the show Harper's Island (2009) It's basically like Scream, but goes for 13 episodes.

My husband & I loved Harper's Island! I actually forget who it was - may have to go back & watch that one again.

We are huge horror movie fans, and I agree that the it's the spooky, supernatural ones that get me. I can't handle gore. If the movie is really good though, I'll tolerate it. I don't think I have many to mention that haven't already been mentioned, but some of my favorites are (and I'm think about what scared the crap out of me when it first came out in addition to what scares me now):
The Ring Blair Witch The Others Sixth Sense The Woman in Black (sequel coming soon--can't wait!) Original Halloween Exorcist Original Omen Jeepers Creepers Sinister Deliver us From Evil (I will be buying this when it comes out on DVD Tuesday) Don't be Afraid of the Dark (original movie as a kid and new one as an adult) Serpent and the Rainbow Angelheart 28 Days Later
