I think Americans are also just particularly unsuited for a quarantine. If the government tells us to do something, our immediate reaction is no. And our government is particularly unsuited to and unlikely to enforce a quarantine (and I’m not necessarily saying that’s a bad thing). I don’t think Trump is handling this well at all and I’m not defending him. I just also think that there are interesting cultural dynamics in play. Americans pride themselves on rugged individualism. We are programmed to question authority. We don’t want government to expand or have more power. In my area there have been numerous lawsuits in federal court challenging city lockdown orders. Businesses defy county orders. Individuals defy city orders. And no one enforces them. If people aren’t going to comply regardless, maybe we should start looking at how to reopen things as safely as possible. yeah, we should stop enforcing any kind of lawbreaking, for sure. I mean, people aren't complying with speed limits, drunk driving laws, whatever, so really, why bother since people aren't going to comply anyway. I’m not sure why that’s a fair comparison. In America, most governors, mayors, and the president are going out of their way to make it clear that these stay at home “orders” aren’t laws. They are directing police forces to not enforce them. They are specifically stating there is no penalty and no enforcement. You can’t compare that to actual laws where the penalty for breaking the law is agreed upon by legislators and published for all to see.

I live in liberal Southern California, and am shocked by the selfish stupidity on display in my area and on my city's social media accounts.
Everyone opposed to the shelter in place order is suddenly a constitutional scholar. There is one guy on my city's FB page that keeps trying to recruit people to join his California militia to overtake the governor. I have seen people compare this to the Holocaust (if they told you to get into a cattle car, you would). The ignorance is stupefying. And embarrassing and infuriating.
For every act of goodness I see, there are 399 other idiots blathering on about conspiracies and liberal agendas and whatever stupid thought enters their Trump addled minds.
In California, we are reaping the benefits of Newsom's early decisions, but all the morons still alive because of that won't see it that way.

New Jersey has also been handing out tickets and fines! Oh and the Governor has been naming them in his news conferences.

I just keep muttering "natural selection" when I see people out and about as if there is nothing to worry about. They probably won't be the ones thinned tho.

My niece is an ICU nurse in the hospital experiencing the most death in Los Angeles. Her unit ran out of body bags in Friday. She can’t stress enough how much worse it is than the media is portraying. God people, please stay the F inside.

But now we’re the most at something! The biggest! In THE WORLD! #WINNING Yuge! ETA: I'm in Los Angeles and I went grocery shopping today. All but 5 people were wearing masks and 4 of them were in the same family. From my observation, people in my neighborhood are very compliant with the quarantine. Everyone I have talked to is both stir crazy but anxious to flatten the curve.
