I have the original Cricut and I’ve used it over the years for cutting words and very basic shapes, but I want to make some of the layered, detailed characters, like from the Community cartridge and such. Any recommendations for a YouTube video that would teach me how to do this in say, kindergartner language, lol?! 😂 I have read the little flip guides and it just does not seem clear to me. I don’t know why it’s so challenging to me, but that’s where I’m at.

I don't know of any videos, it just took some trial and error for me. Cut each layer in a different color and try to assemble. It's at that point I realize I need to cut a certain layer again, so one or more pieces are a different color.
I took notes of the final result, in case I want to make again.
This is where the new machines are easier. You can change the colors on your screen to what you really want it to look like, then cut by color.

I still have the original Expressions and just cut a few things from the Critters cartridge for Easter. Let me check to see if I have some instructions. If not I can maybe put something together. After I have coffee...it's not quite 7 am here in CA.

Her site is very "busy" now, but Mary at Cardz TV has done some great videos in the past when she was using her Expression. If you look for her older Cricut videos, you'll find them. She's also been doing occasional Expression videos recently. Here's a link to her blog: Cardz TV. She also has a YouTube channel: Cardz TV YouTube Channel

Ok I hope you can understand my instructions. If you look at the attached photo (critter cartridge) to make the frog all parts are in the bottom right position of the instructions or "lowercase", do not press shift key. To make the dragonfly you all parts are in the upper left position or "uppercase", you need to press the shift key. To cut the base layer, press the frog key on the key pad, with no other keys pressed, the base will cut. To get the different layers press the corresponding key after pressing the frog. So to get the frog outline or second layer, press the frog key then Layer 1 key. To get the frogs belly press the frog key then the Layer 2 key, etc. Remember if you want the image that is in the upper left corner you need to make sure the shift key is pressed. Each cartridge has different layer key names. So on Critters it's Layer 1, Layer 2, etc. On your Community cartridge it's Layers, Puzzle, Tile, etc. I hope this helps and I didn't confuse you more. It does take some practice. I recommend practicing with printer paper or ugly paper. Attachments:

AboveRubiesStudio (Megan Elizabeth) has tons of Cricut videos on her YouTube channel. She has since branched out quite a bit, but if you go to her channel page, and scroll way down, you'll find the older posts. Here is a link to a list I got when I searched her channel and Create a Critter on YouTube: Above Rubies Studio Create a Critter. She was my favorite when I had my Expression. I bought many cartridges because of her. And then there's My Pink Stamper, another big enabler for me. As you can see, I've been using Cricut machines for a long time. I hope these help.

I totally forgot about My Pink Stamper! I learned a lot from her back in the old days.
