For the last month or so my husband, 19 year old and I have been watching a few episodes of House Hunters every evening. We’ve turned it into a competition to guess which house they choose and the one with the most points (yes we have a score sheet) gets to pick where we go out to eat when we feel comfortable doing that and SIP is over. (For our state that’s June 10)
Anyway, last nights episode put me over the edge. Very young couple $300,000. Their main need was a fence for the dogs. They were adamant about not going over budget yet they buy a complete gut job with no fence for $299,000. They said in their interviews after buying the house that the fence would have to wait while they sat in the middle of a complete disaster of a house.
Also, people that want older homes for the “charm and character” but get so disappointed when the rooms are small and it lacks closet space.
Speaking of “charm and character” I would be happy to never hear those words again! Lol

I like watching that show too - but it does bug me because there rarely is any good reason behind the house they pick and it often isn’t logical. Basically very hard to predict the house they will pick and I usually disagree!

Sounds like "charm and character" have replaced "must have granite" as the overused expression! I lost my patience with HH a couple of years ago and don't watch it anymore. I do still watch HH International, mainly to see the locations and what apartments are like in other countries. They too wants lots of "charm and character", although they want that in an historic building WITH a completely updated, gourmet, open kitchen! Then the ones who act all aghast at what an apartment/house costs. It's like they never did a bit of research before just picking up and moving across the world!

Sure, you thought you'd go down to the market every day for a fresh baguette, but that isnt happening now.

I can’t watch either version of that show because the clients are so obnoxious, clueless and unrealistic. They usually have some ridiculously low budget for where they want to live and they have these insane expectations for the house they want to buy with that ridiculous budget. (No granite counters? NO WAY! Or, Ugh, I couldn’t *ever* live in a house with that color in that master bedroom. Me: Um, ever hear of a thing called PAINT?) It’s just dumb.

House Hunters cracks me up ... We have two jack russell terriers but we need five bedrooms and four baths Or the one on the International episode I saw last night where they had six kids! The husband thought they could stay under $1000 a month and only needed three bedrooms

It makes sense that viewers can't accurately predict which house will be chosen, since it's a fake show. They show homes that aren't even for sale, so of course the buyers can't choose them.

There are usually tell tale signs. If a house is filled with personal effects and clothes in the closet, they aren't picking it. It's usually the only empty house. When I discovered that the couple looking for a house/apartment had to already have bought/leased one, it made the commentary in the show even more annoying. And if I hear "happy wife, happy life" one more time, I may lose it!

I think it’s so cute you guys are watching together and keeping score! How fun! The show makes me batty. Those budgets are crazy and the expectations are ridiculous. Either they have this ring budget and want top of the line everything or they have a giant budget and act like it isn’t enough

Too much “scripted reality” for me to enjoy watching it anymore.
But kudos to your family for making a contest out of it!

I never watch House Hunters, but I went through a phase with Love It or List It for a bit and I noticed a lot of requests for “open sight lines so mom can see the kids from wherever she is in the house” and a lot of moms insisting they’d need a giant kitchen because that’s where they planned to be most of the time.

We were watching HH International about a month ago and a town was featured that we were in last September. It was so much fun when they were walking down the streets that we walked on and being able to recognize the shops and cafes. Of course they didn't chose the one they should have!

I'll watch the reno homes for the before and after but know going in that it is completely faked. Every house has a large problem they have to fix they didn't account for... Shit even I now know to budget to have to redo the entire electrical and to have a beam put in if I am taking down a wall.

I love watching HH because a lot of the episodes are filmed here in NC. I like to look for sub-contractor information based on the information displayed on vehicles or on the t-shirts the workers are wearing. There are too many re-runs though...

My pet peeve is the dude who needs a music room. It doesn't matter what the house looks like or that the kitchen is a disaster and his kids will need to be jammed into postage stamp sized rooms as long as he gets his music room (generally the largest room in the house). Now once in a while you see a woman get too focused on something too, but it generally isn't just something she will solely use. Earlier shows that included a little kid with an unusual name always cracked me up too. They mentioned the kid's name in every room as they walked through each house. I'm okay with people wanting granite (or whatever specific countertop they like). Having the right countertop makes a kitchen.

I love seeing towns I've visited featured. I don't have a problem with the scripted/fake portions and usually record the show so we can fast forward through it. At least with HHI they show where the property is located within context of the clients work/school so we can usually guess the final pick more accurately. I don't watch HH regularly any more and always felt that was the missing link in guessing their final pick. People will give up a lot on their wish list for location, location, location.

In the past, the house they picked was always the empty one. My theory was that the buyers had already purchased the home before filming, otherwise they would need to film numerous homes not knowing which one the buyers’ ultimately end up with. Once they started the international version, it was much harder to pick because quite a few places came furnished. Then they started the beachfront bargain one and changed it up. I still believe the house has already been purchased prior to filming, but what I think they do is show the owners’ actual furnished home mixed in with contenders as the “final” house they end up usually has closing scenes with the family sitting outside only.

Love the international ones but hate the ones with 'participating' children.

My dh and I watch both HH and HHI. We usually fast forward to the last recap of the 3 homes now. Some buyers drive us bonkers.
We now watch You Live In What? and have become dreamers. Dh wants to buy church somewhere and fixing it up will be our retirement.

A good friend of mine was on HHI. They bought a place outside of London in the show, but have moved several times since then and are currently in the US. A unique aspect they were looking for was a large garage because her husband designs cars for major auto manufacturers and has a small collection of his own.

Natural light, entertaining space and of course room for friends and family. The one with kids are ridiculous. I prefer HH International but am dumbfounded that people think it makes sense to move overseas with a couple of dogs. And the ones who pick the fifth floor walk ups with no elevator are just stupid. I’m sick of needing charm vs modern and city vs country. Way too scripted. And on the international episodes, there is no suggestion the price is negotiable. As for Love It and List It AND the Property Brothers...why don’t they have the house inspected so things like the foundation is crumbling or the wiring needs replacing are discovered before they purchase it.

I hear you on the granite (we have composite and like it very much) but still, a young couple just starting out with no money who will be eating beans and ramen three out of seven days a week so they can pay for the mortgage payment to begin with does NOT need granite in their kitchen for their starter home. Sorry, they just don’t and it isn’t realistic.

I used to watch back in the early days and always enjoyed it, but you could tell which was the house they purchased. My heart was broken when I figured out it was all hooey and the other two homes were not even in contention, especially when I thought they picked the crappier option IMO. My favorite real estate show was Buy Me. There were some batshit crazy homeowners on that show.

At least on the American shows, the couple do pick one of the three in the end. The UK equivalent shows (Escape to the Country et al) show three or four houses and very rarely are any of them chosen as usually all are rejected for some reason or other. Quite frequently, the show ends with a voiceover stating that "they made an offer but lost out to x" or "they found somewhere themselves a few months later". Makes the whole thing rather pointless - except for our voyeuristic pleasure! Incidentally, re HHI, we "knew" someone who participated in a Paris version of the show and can confirm it was all totally faked - she and her daughter were already living in the apartment before the filming took place. But do I still watch these shows?! What do you think?

Still lots of fun to watch, especially the ones that were in France!
