I know it sounds super snotty.
I've made two appointments 2-4 weeks out to give blood through Red Cross. Both times have been cancelled. In the meantime I keep getting robocalls and mailed flyers telling me there is a shortage of blood and I should donate. I am O neg and know they would really like my blood, but seriously. Instead I made an appointment through Stanford blood center for 4 weeks from now. We'll see.
How are blood donations is your area?

Yeah they keep cancelling them here too. Oh well.
They want recovered Corona survivors to donate as well, for the antibodies, but since they haven't tested all that many people there seems to be a rather small pool to pull from.

I wonder if they had unexpected staff shortages?

I donated yesterday and the appointments were running about 45 minutes late. I didn't really mind I had nothing else to do and the lineup was outside and it was a beautiful day.
Here in Canada I was originally scheduled to donate on April 16 but with the need for social distancing and fewer people in the clinic I had to berescheduled till yesterday. Normally at the first stage there are about 10-12 chairs, yesterday there were 4. Also there are usually about 18 - 20 beds/chairs for the acutal donations. There were 10 in the same space.

DH used to donate pretty regularly, but he got really frustrated the last time when he made an appointment, took time off of work to go, and then they let all the walk-ins go before him while he sat there for an hour. He was not impressed and hasn’t been back since. He said, “Why should I bother making an appointment if they’re going to take all the people that didn’t bother to make one go first?”

I'm in the same situation; it has taken over a month to find a blood drive. I found one at the beginning of the month and then it abruptly canceled. I have an appointment Thursday. It's likely an issue of staffing.

You have to go to the centers themselves. They are not holding traditional blood drives around here at all. But in order for me to go to a red cross I think I would have to drive 2 hours to maybe Nashville and I wouldn't go near a major metropolitan area right now if you paid me. I am also O neg

I've given up trying. I'm also 0-negative and when they started publicizing the shortage a few weeks back, I tried to make an appointment. You can't book online and after calling a couple times and finally getting through, they have no appointments available. I understand that they can't do drives and are limiting appointments to adhere to social distancing, but don't understand why they're advertising shortage and asking for donations when they can't accommodate donors.

My sil donates plasma on a regular basis. I don’t believe she’s experienced any bumps in the road.
Maybe one of our medical peas can correct me on this. Is it still true you can’t donate once you’ve had mono? I used to donate whenever there was a blood drive but haven’t done so in 30 years because of mono.

I don't think that is true, at least here in Ontario Canada.. I had a severe case of mono (hospitalized) when I was 13. I have donated blood since I was 17 I am now 52

What's been pissing me off about these calls for donations is the continued gay ban. It's outdated and wrong, especially considering that they really want the antibodies.

I used to donate whenever there was a blood drive but haven’t done so in 30 years because of mono. What I've been told and quick googling seems to confirm - mono does not restrict you from donating as long as it was over a year ago and you're fully recovered. However, if you had jaundice with it, you cannot donate.

My boyfriend had no problem donating blood. They contacted him saying they were in need, he made an appointment and went in. It all worked out smoothly.

I lived in Europe over 30 years ago and I still cannot donate blood. Our whole family of Oneg blood donors is out except my son who never lived there. It's a shame. My DD is in Europe now and donates regularly.

I can't donate but DH does regularly (O type) and has also been surprised with cancelled appointments. He just keeps making another figuring they'll get to him at some point.

I was CMV negative, which meant I hadn't had some common infection, so they could give my blood to babies and people with compromised immune systems. Then, suddenly, they decided you couldn't donate if you'd been in England longer than three months. I do feel frustrated when I hear about how much they need donors, but what can you do?

See I can call a Red Cross center, or Blood Assurance center, make an appointment and donate. Absolutely no problem doing that. But I would have make quite the drive, and to a city where they have a lot more cases then my hole in the woods town.

Oh I am pissed at them too.. I go through their website and enter my zip for local locations.. and it says zero.. I expand it to 50 miles and still zero.... I change my zip to my work address and same thing. Ya'll want my blood then you will have to come and get it. I am done with the games.

I’ve been trying for over a month to get an appointment to donate blood, but there have been no open appointments within 25 miles. 25 miles brings me really close to a couple of really congested city areas with large numbers of CV so I really don’t want to go there or further. Would rather stay closer to home. Tried again today since my college kids said they would also donate, but the next open appointment is in June. I thought I could go to the blood center across from my office since they have lots of openings, but they’re only accepting AB plasma (apparently a 3hr process and you have to have a Type AB blood). And still I get daily calls and weekly emails to home and work asking me to donate and saying there’s a dire shortage. ..
