Why thank you myshelly for your thoughts on pets. Doesn't help answer my question but we know you can't keep opinions to yourself.

We have always worn shoes in the house (except ds - his shoes explode off of his feet as soon as he hits indoors). When we replaced our carpet with wood laminate, we started taking them off. Now that we are working from home, we tend to wear shoes. I haven't noticed any difference in the cleanliness of the house. I’m Canadian so it’s just a given that nobody wears shoes in the house. It seems so funny to me that you’d get up, get dressed and put on shoes to stay home. 😄 I wear slippers all the time because my feet get a little sore if I don’t. I have quite a collection of slippers. 😄 (No judging at all...I know it’s different down there!)

our dogs are mainly indoor dogs; when they do go outside to do their business, there is a rug right outside the patio door that they have to step on before coming back inside the house. And if it's wet / muddy / rainy outside (which is not often, since it's Arizona), I actually stop them in the patio and wipe their feet off myself with an old bath towel before I let them come back inside. Other than that, there's not too much dirt that they track in and out; our backyard is all gravel and xeriscaping.

We also do the laundry room bring in and wipe down after the rains and messy weather. This year we have had rain almost every other day it seems and I am so tired of wiping down 12 paws. And one wiggly body. My two older girls let me just get the job done. My 4 yr old catahoula/husky wants to make it playtime.

So, normally, I would hang out in my slippers, but with working from home, I am sitting in a counter height chair and the rung that I rest my feet on hurts my feet. LOL
There are plenty of people who are shoes off households, we just don't particularly care. Pre-work from home, I would not put shoes on until shortly before leaving the house and on weekends I still do that. (I'm not a psychopath LOL, why would anyone wear shoes if they don't have to!)

Wouldn’t be much point in a message board if people kept their opinions to themselves. No one asked for your opinion on pets. Working on your tone and attitude would be greatly appreciated. We are a no shoe house, expect for DH who would put his shoes on mid morning while getting ready and keep them on until he left for the day. No more. Even the kids take their shoes off if they come into the house for a drink of water or to grab a jack. I insist. DH and I own nice leather slippers, we keep them by the door. Kids don't care about going barefoot or in socks. We have several pairs of crocs and flip flops at the back and front door for taking out garbage, dealing with pets, etc. My house is very small, no mudroom, very little in the way of space. It can be done. My step mom has issues with her feet (she can't go barefoot), even she brings her orthopedic clogs when she comes (or came, back in the BC days), for a visit.

My DH is a Floridian and never wears shoes in the house. If he has them on, he has just gotten home and is leaving. I have foot issues so I always have some sort of shoe on. Like a Birks sandal or along those lines. I could see it would be an easy transition to make our house a no-shoe house. I have thought of this off and on. My question is in all seriousness - what about pets? We have three dogs. They go in and out all day. Our backyard has very little grass. We now have vinyl plank flooring so the dirty part is easily taken care of with a Swiffer or the robovac. Do you just not worry about them? I am also a shoe hound! I do not even want to disclose the number of pairs I own. So how does that work? Do I carry them to the door in the morning as I head to the office. I am in a semi-casual office. I don't just have a few pairs of work shoes. All of my shoes are counted as home/work shoes. Well, except my walking shoes. Canadian here so there wouldn't be many months it would be an option to wear shoes in the house and then, well that's just gross. We just keep all our boots or shoes by the door and we do have lots and not enough storage especially for the boots. it sucks because our house isn't very big but shopping less isn't an option I do rotate them seasonally, out of season goes downstairs. No one has room in their closets to store shoes, and that seems gross, clean clothes and dirty shoes. My sister has 2 dogs on a farm and when they let them in and out and it's muddy or wet they have to lay on the mat until they lick their paws or dry out. We all wear something different on our feet in the house. I wear socks and slippers all the time, I'm cold. DH and oldest DD are bare feet. Younger DD is a combo of bare feet, socks or slippers depending on what she's feeling. I'd say only if you have feet problems would you wear actual (indoor) shoes in the house here.

He doesn't leave the house right now though. I honestly think he's only left once in 5 weeks. I am like you, and have a thing for shoes. I have a large rack I bought from Amazon that I keep in the garage, right near the door from the house. I just go pick the shoes I want right before I leave. I also take shoes off when I come in and go put them back on the rack. I am always just in socks or bare feet. It's how I'm comfortable. I can't leave shoes sitting out or the dog will eat th em. Our backyard sounds similar and our dog is in and out all day. I just don't worry about it. She refuses to wipe her feet, she's rude.

We are a shoes off household. I have athletic shoes I wear only inside, if I need to be standing for a long period of time. What is on your shoes is disgusting: link

My kids and DH will pretty much be barefoot whenever they can. I have to have shoes/slippers. Since getting plantar fasciitis in my left foot last year, I have 1 pair of sandals and 1 pair of tennis shoes that I can wear. I wear them inside and out. I'm hoping to get a pair of house slippers this year.

Thank you. We also do the laundry room bring in and wipe down after the rains and messy weather. This year we have had rain almost every other day it seems well, we have an average of 8 inches of rainfall a year, so that's one positive to living in the desert, lol. It rains so infrequently here that one of our dogs doesn't like to go outside when it's raining or has been raining- I practically have to carry her outside to do her business... she doesn't like to get her feet wet!

set up a designated spot in our garage (we enter through the garage) with a chair on a mat so now DH removes his shoes before he comes in and puts his shoes on when he leaves. The chair is a smart idea!

This is my dog too. Doesn't mind snow at all, but rain, you'd think she was going to melt. I have very thick grass in my backyard. There's no puddling of water back there, no mud, nothing like that. I can't imagine my princess would go near it if there were. Honestly, the dog is probably cleaner than my 18 year old son. And we still let him live here.

As someone who has always lived in a shoes off household, I just don't get why it's a big deal. Hell, I don't know why anyone would WANT to wear shoes in the house? If your feet are cold, wear socks and slippers. SO much comfier than shoes. But I'm in MI and with four seasons, it's just too hard to keep carpet and floors clean if you wear your shoes outside and inside. Now if it's not muddy/wet/snowy out we might make a quick run back inside for something and keep our shoes on etc but if we come home to stay, our shoes come off. For some people it isn’t a matter of want but need. I had to have custom orthotics made for my shoes last year after my big toe was fused in 2017. The pressure on the bones in the toes that had to take over the duties of bearing weight caused a lot of pain. I do have slippers that I wear sometimes but I can’t wear them all the time and the orthotics don’t work well in them. It’s a PITA to take off one pair of shoes, switch the orthotics into a different pair of house only shoes, and continue on only to have to keep switching them back and forth every time I have to go outside. And at $500 a pop (which would have to be paid for out of pocket due to deductibles) I can’t justify ordering another pair just to have a set for a second set of inside only shoes. It’s different when you can just quickly slide your feet into a different pair of shoes or slippers. As for our house, it’s kind of half and half. DH almost always takes off his shoes at the door and walks around in socks, but he also tends to be the one with more visibly nasty junk on his shoes to begin with. I leave mine on if they’re reasonably clean and dry, otherwise I’ll wear slippers inside. I try to find shoes with smoother soles that won’t track a lot of dirt and junk in. I hate being barefoot because we have indoor dogs and the big one will slobber his water at times. Our kid almost never wears shoes or slippers in the house, mostly because she hates wearing shoes anyway. The way I look at it is most of my main floor is tile and tile can be cleaned. I vacuum all the floors and mop the tile with a steam mop on a regular basis. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There is carpet in our family room but I hate it and I’m hoping to be able to ditch it for some type of hard surfaced flooring sooner than later. We have a professional Rug Doctor machine and we use it on our carpets several times a year.
